KAMPALA - Three soldiers face the court martial for turning their guns on innocent people they are supposed to protect. Their heinous acts occurred on Christmas day in northern Uganda.

"We have arrested the bastards, for court martial," said Maj. Shaban Bantariza, the UPDF spokesman on Friday.

At about midnight on Christmas day, Ms Scovia Abore was shot dead by Pte. Daniel Odeke in Lira. Bantariza said the army was investigating the circumstances that led to the incident.

A short while after 1.00am on December 26, another soldier on foot patrol, shot and killed Mr Patrick Omondi, aged 25.

Bantariza told Sunday Monitor that Omondi refused to respond to security orders and was shot. He died instantly.

In a related incident in the neighbouring Gulu district, a soldier beat a woman to death after a disagreement. The woman has only been identified as Ms Laker.

Bantariza said investigations into all the three incidents were still going on.

He however added that excitement over Christmas could be factored in, "you know this is Christmas, the fellows get drunk."

Meanwhile, like the police, the army said this Christmas was "generally quiet."
Bantarinza said that there were "at least no attacks from terrorists".

But Sunday Monitor has learnt that 11 Lords Resistance Army rebels disguised as UPDF soldiers managed to enter Pabo Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp where they stole merchandise and fled.

A highly placed security source said: "they entered the camp and even discussed [with locals] the World Food Programme food distribution activities and later they fled."

Bantariza said he had not yet received the report but promised to investigate.
The rebels also allegedly tried to enter Gulu town, through the Layibi-Lacor area but the UPDF foiled their attempts.
