LIRA: MUSEVENI MEETS WITH RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND PROMISES TO DEFEAT KONY
The President of the Ugandan Republic, Yoweri Museveni, met today on his military base of Okwang, in the parish of Aliwan, around 40km north-east of Lira (North Uganda), with the leaders of the local communities. Among these figures was also Father Guido Oliana, the provincial superior of the Comboni missionaries. As referred to MISNA by local sources, âMuseveni first listened to the reading of a memorandum undersigned by the traditional religious leaders, in which they called for a prompt end to the war; a humane settlement for the displaced fleeing the violence of the rebels of the LRA (lordâs Resistance Army), currently piled in displaced camps without elementary hygienic services, in which even food is lacking; major security for citizens of the districts, forced for nearly two decades to live in a situation of constant danger; also, more attention of the State over the disastrous situation of schools in North Uganda, where in the majority of villages there are no longer school buildings and the students have no notebooks, books nor a space to study inâ. Museveni then took the stand, reiterating that âwithin two months the Ugandan armed forces will defeat Joseph Kony, leader of the LRAâ, referred the source to MISNA, adding that in fact âin the past days the situation in North Uganda has slightly improved, thanks also to the presence of the large military contingent brought by the President for his personal safetyâ. Aside from promising the defeat of the rebels, that over the past 17 years have caused the death of at least 100-thousand people, displacement of a million and abducted some 25-thousand children in the northern districts of the African nation, the Head of State announced to the local religious authorities that âhe will not leave Okwang until Kony is defeated. For the past week Museveni has in fact stably resided in the military camp, while in the previous 15 days he had travelled back and forth from Kampala to the Lira districtâ, concluded the MISNA source.
