Why Banyoro, Batooro will miss out on oil spoils while Bakiga gain

The Banyoro will not benefit from the oil boom unless they abandon the culture of laziness. Banyoro and Batooro are daily reminded of their laziness but they deny it.

There are many examples of when they refuse to work in spite of living in abject poverty. If they persist with this culture, the oil boom will benefit their rivals, the Bakiga, who will be happy to supply produce to the sprouting oil city.

The Banyoro will remain in slumber and later accuse the Bakiga of deriving wealth out of the oil boom. To cure this laziness, I have written two books: Soma ebitabu twejune obutamanya.

It is in Runyoro/ Rutooro and appeals to them to adopt a reading culture so that they get wisdom to unearth hidden treasures in books, media, etc.

The second book is Ihanga rukaanga bakwataniza, which appeals to the Banyoro to revive their forefathers' culture of working in village groups.

Villagemates contribute labour on a member's plantation. The lazy person would therefore be forced to render labour in return, on other villagemates' shambas.
This system has proved invaluable to the Bakiga in Kibaale District .

The two books are at camera and in ready phase. I am challenging the pillars of Bunyoro-Kitara to contribute money to print these books and supply them free of charge to all primary schools in the Bunyoro-Kitara region.

A committee of religious leaders from the Catholic and Protestant churches, and Muslim faith, assisted by the district chairpersons, and district education officers from the four districts of Bunyoro-Kitara region will ensure that the funds are directly paid to Mariannum Press to print the books.

These enumerated elders will help ensure that the books are distributed to all schools in our four districts. After that the district education officers will be charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the culture of reading books, and rendering hard and honest labour is inculcated among school pupils in the Bunyoro - Kitara region.
We must nurture this culture as a matter of urgency.
