Mengo opposes city expansion
ROBERT MWANJE
MENGO
MENGO officials have opposed the governments plan to expand Kampala city boundaries into Wakiso and Mukono districts.
The Katikkiro of Buganda, Mr Dan Muliika, said the government should restore the original city boundaries and consider developing suburbs into satellite cities.
There is no reason why Kampala should reach Kajjansi and Lugazi. Suburb towns should be developed as commercial cities and not necessarily a capital city, Muliika
said.
He was meeting Kampala City Council officials led by Central division chairman Godfrey Nyakaana at Mengo on Monday. He said the Buganda kingdom offered a demarcated land to the central government as a capital city including Nakasero, Mulago, Mbuya, Old Kampala, Lubaga, and parts of Makindye.
The Buganda government is worried that the expansion will lead to encroachment on the kingdoms land.
Last Month, Kampala Mayor Hajji Nasser Sebaggala and president Yoweri Museveni agreed to expand Kampala to Kawolo and Kajjansi under the new city development plan.
