One follow up note on Cavalier -- they have an "End User Common Line Charge" (also referred to as the federal subscriber line charge) of $7.00 which, I believe, is quite high compared to other companies. I switched to Cavalier b/c of their DSL package. Prior to that, I used a company called CTI based in York, PA. Their website is http://www.captel.com. I found their local service to be very cheap -- around $26.00/month w/ call waiting, w/o Caller I.D. Their customer service was good.

Unfortunately they are getting out of the local phone market. Does anyone a company other than Verizon as their local carrier? Since Verizon is behind HB30 (PA's effort to block Philly's wireless initiative), I see no reason to support them with my business. Whether I believe in the Philly wireless efforts or not, the fact that Verizon is trying to remove our ability to decide for ourselves is really appalling.
