When a user is expected to provide keyboard input, it is not typical
that only one case will be acceptable. This bug exposes an inconsistency
to the user interface that results in poor usability.

I am not advocating case insensitivity or otherwise. I'll leave those
technical details to the developers to work out. Furthermore, the better
solution is probably not to require the user to provide input at all.
The user's name can be gleaned from /etc/passwd in the same way that the
standard GNOME games do so. However, as long as frozen-bubble does
require the player's name to be entered manually, I feel that uppercase
letters should be an acceptable form of input.
