Ok I installed the Intrepid debs. Didn't seem to make any difference to tell you the truth. I'm currently running on dual screens of 1600x1200 and 1600x1024 (xorg.conf has Virtual 3200 1200).
Attempting to enable the visual effects gives "Desktop effects could not be enabled". Running compiz gives: Checking for Xgl: not present. Detected PCI ID for VGA: Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present. Trying again with indirect rendering: Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present. Checking for non power of two support: present. Checking for Composite extension: present.
