Thanks for all your help snarlydwarf! Finally got it working. Ended up just buying a whole new external hard drive, since I needed a full-sized backup drive anyway, and formatting it with one partition in ext4.
I learned a lot about mounting and unmounting and chmod and chown, so that's good. Seems like there's a millions ways things don't work, and I think I tried them all! The final step was figuring that you had to add a "/" to the end of the address in the squeezebox server settings for where your music if stored, even if you selected a directory there via the "browse files."
