Hello,

I would like to ask if USRP's HW+SW of is open/free to be used as
reference for developing customize product: including FPGA (HW/SW) ,
schematic of base board + daughter board , etc.
I read some articles comparing USRP to other "open source" SDR, and
I'm not fully sure that all HW is "open" and can be used for future
customize product, (for example some comment said that daughter board
schematic is not available) .

Thank you!
Ran

Hello Ran. Ettus Research UHD and the FPGA code for USRPs is open source
software licensed under GPLv3 and available on Github at
github.com/EttusResearch<http://github.com/EttusResearch>.

The hardware is not open source as defined by the Open Source Hardware
Association (oshwa.org<http://oshwa.org>). However, PDFs of all of the
schematics are available at files.ettus.com<http://files.ettus.com>.

Hi Ran,

The USRP drivers are fully open source, as are the FPGA images;
https://github.com/EttusResearch/

The schematics to all our products (including all daughterboards; the newest
products might need some time to bring the schematics into a shape where they
are useful for analysis and support purposes) are available from
files.Ettus.com. so far, there's only the exception of one page of the x310
schematic, which contains the national instruments pcie controller, an IC that
you wouldn't be able to buy on the market anyway.

What we don't publish are PCB layout/gerbers, as that would probably make it
impossible to compete with manufacturers that don't have the R&D cost.

But I assume you don't want to spin your own USRP, anyway, as you mention
extensions:

While for most applications that is absolutely not necessary and usually a
financially not desirable option for customers, it's relatively easy to design
your own custom daughterboard and integrate a driver for that into the normal
USRP driver, so that you can use it just as if it was made by us.

Hope that answers your questions! If not, don't hesitate to ask.

Best regards,
Marcus
