On my system (5.3.20), valias can return several aliases, particularly for ezmlm mailing lists, e.g.:
This will most likely cause problems with your script.
In the script, he isn't using the output of valias, but is checking the exit code to see if the alias exists. Note that the first version of valias to set exit codes will be in the 5.3.28 release (planned for later today).
