Good evening Arthur
It's night time here in London.
The cover sheet on my copy of the two mss. says supplied to
Mr. Robert Strizich crossed out then Professor Alan Curtis Music
Department, University of California.
I wonder if I actually got it from June Yakeley who may have got it
from Robert Strizich rather than from the LSA.
The pages in my copy are numbered in ink 57 - 158 for XL b.209 which
suggests that some pages are missing at the beginning, and 4-150 for
XL b.211. The last 5 pages of this are for 6-course with open basses.
Does Boetischer mention that?
I managed to get some of the folio numbers from Emil Vogl's article on
Logy in LSA Journal but that doesn't help for the rest of the pages.
We'll have to leave it at that for now I think.
Best wishes
Monica

Good morning, Monica!
   >
You must enjoy cross-word puzzles. Because you have something
similar
puzzle in dealing with XLb.209 and b.211. Here is some additional
   information from Boetticher's RISM inventory:
   >
b.209 has penciled foliation 1-73 (perhaps with the blank pages
   ignored).
   >
b.211 Folios 144-46 are to be read with the book upside down (that
is,
   backwards).
We probably have Peter Danner to thank for the many guitar
tablatures
in the LSA Microfilm Library. I think he has a special interest in
that repertory and was the microfilm library's first curator.>

When I searched the libray, I had 153 "hits" for the word guitar.

   Hi Arthur
The LSA copy includes XL b.211 as well as b.209 all in one. It is
not
entirely clear where one ends and the next begins as pages have been
variously numbered at different times. It will be useful to know
which
are the blank folios - I may be able to work out the correct
foliation
from that with a little bit of luck.
   Best wishes
   Monica

   Monica,
I didn't see b.211 in the LSA library. Maybe I just missed it.
   Speaking of blank pages.
We've got the world's champion blank page scribe. Wolfgang
Boetticher's RISM Bvii "descriptive" catalogue of Lauten- und
Gitarrentabulaturen has hundreds of manuscripts listed. But hardly a
single composer is named and of course no titles either. But blank
pages? He lists EVERY blank page in hundreds of lute and guitar
   tablatures.
   XLb 209. Folios 13v, 14r, 18v, 19r-22r, 36v-40r, 44v-48r, 50r-55r,
59v-
   61r, 63v-67.
   XLb 211 Folios 5r, 10v, 13v-14, 16v, 17r, 20-26, 32v-39, 41v-43, 45-
   63, 65v-67, 68v-142(!!), 144
I have a review from JAMS:

   Dear Arthur
Thank you for this. I have copies of the manuscripts from the LSA -
   but
the pages are not numbered and also not very legible. Some pages
seem
to be missing as well or in the wrong order. But at least it is
useful
to know that they are not easy to get hold of! A pity but that's
life
   I
   suppose.
   Best wishes
   Monica

   Hello, Monica!
These and many other lute and guitar tablatures were returned in
