Well, I have

        :set ruler laststatus=2

and even a custom status line, but the "standard" status line ought to 
show it too if 'ruler' is set (which is one of the "useful options" set 
by the vimrc_example.vim). With 'laststatus' set to 0 (never a bottom 
status line) or 1 (only if there are at least two windows) the line and 
column will still be displayed if 'ruler' is set.
