I don't know what vim is doing, but I suspect it works like password
prompts in pipelines, eg:

    $ someprogram | ssh user@site "sh someotherprogram -"
    user@site password:
    $

Those read from STDERR to get keyboard input in the face of STDIN being
NOTATTY.
