Sounds familiar, as MacReader wasn't my first Mac-reading program. I remember there was a program for Windows 3.1 that could read Mac, and make it seamless, though Mac icons appeared, Mac application could not be used. There was a variation of this program to access OS/2 files as well.
I recently just stuck a 1.44 MB floppy with tape over the notch. It works just fine. That's the solution I'm suggesting.
