The G3's are as capable as they were when new but have fallen behind like the 68K and pre-G3 PowerPC Macs did in their time. I'm giving away my 450Mhz blue iMac DV because I haven't used it in a long time. It got put out to pasture because it just couldn't cope with the way the WWW was changing. I fired it up again when Ten Four Fox was out of beta, put OS X 10.4.11 on it, updated everything and it was still slow on the web. Back in the closet it went. I did look into a G4 upgrade for it, but not at the prices those upgraded mainboards sell for. Too much for a $10 yard sale Mac which I upgraded with a 7,200 RPM 40 gig hard drive, 512 meg RAM and an AirPort card, all of which I already had from PC upgrades or got for free. Use an old Mac for what it was made to handle and it's a good computer. I shoehorned OS X onto a Revision 2 beige G3 desktop and the result was pretty much useless. The same would be true for putting OS X 10.5 onto any but the fastest G3 Macs. --- On Wed, 4/4/12, Michael Needham <[email protected]> wrote: So I think the PPC is quite viable at this time.
