You are bidding on a used Apple Macintosh G4 Cube.
This trusty machine served me as my main computer from 2001 till faster machines came along, when the Cube became my print server in the guestroom where I keep the laserprinter. It has run pretty much continuously for 11 years (sleeping when not in use, of course).
The 500MHz cubes seem to be considerably rarer than the 450Mhz Cubes. When new, this Cube came with a 40GB hard drive and I believe 256MB of RAM. A few years ago I upgraded it to a 120GB hard drive and its maximum memory of 1.5GB.
After 11 years there is a light patina of use, but only one blemish worth mention being a slight vertical line about 1cm long on the front lower left. Unlike many Cubes, however, this Cube's case has none of the cracks that could appear in the case (often from the top area where the screws are).
Of the two female USB ports on the bottom of the core, one of them is missing the plastic tongue that helps to orient the male USB plug correctly. The port works fine (I just tested it by plugging the speakers into both ports), but you must be careful inserting the male USB plug into the port. It is best to insert it properly in the right-hand port to get the correct orientation and then move it to the left.
The Cube is running both Classic OS 9.2 and and Mac OS 10.4.11. A variety of software is
installed in both environments. I have the original "About the Power Mac G4
Cube" booklet and both Software Install and Software Restore discs that came with
the Cube (OS 9.0.4 v.2.1). I have fitted the Cube with a new lithium clock battery.
The Cube's modem works, or at least did the last time I used it, which was in 2005. The Cube has an Airport card and connects perfectly to 802.11b/g compatible wireless networks. (The wireless security I use with the Cube is WPA/WPA2 Personal.)
It breaks my heart a bit to sell off this piece of engineering art. But for me it is time to move on, and so time for someone else to enjoy and care for this magnificent machine.
(The thing that made me decide to sell was when the separate UPS backup battery
gave up the ghost. As I live in a rural location I've used the UPS just to
ensure that the occasional power outages we have don't affect the Cube's power
supply. There's nothing wrong with the power supply in this auction, but they
are known to fail (this is the second one I have had with this Cube) and when I
weighed the difference between getting a new UPS and getting a Mac Mini I
decided to go for the latter.)
I will ship to addresses in Ireland and in the UK with GLS, since UPS, DHL, and
TNT all quoted about €100 for shipping. I have set a €50 flat rate for GLS but
believe the actual shipping cost will be less, and I will refund the difference
to the buyer. (I can't know exactly till the Cube and its accoutrements are
finally packed and weighed.)
