You're right - the outer join symbol for OpenBase is just * instead of *= or =* . In order to get this to work, copy your sql query from that action into a Direct DBMS action and replace with the right syntax wherever you are doing your joins. You can then do the exact same stuff in your results HTML for the Direct DBMS that you would for the originial Search Action.
