The "standard" builds of Qt5 do use Pulse Audio as an intermediary to 
lower level audio services on Linux, I believe this is because it is 
assume that desktop system requires an audio server so that audio device 
sharing is seamless. I believe that until recently (Qt 5.4) building Qt 
on a system that has Pulse Audio installed disables the direct ALSA 
support (in error).

It is possible to build Qt without pulse audio support. If alsa-lib and 
gstreamer are installed, the Qt configuration should detect them and 
build in ALSA support.
