Late ADIF specs are more specific about the acceptable contents of the fields, but the goal of the ADIF standard is to have an upward compatibility. In the best case, programs processing ADIF files should accept files according to old ADIF specs and convert them to the more recent specs at the output. Unfortunately this is not always possible. Often, the programs doesn't have any option to enable such conversions.
Finally, my choice is the generate ADIF files which are considered as acceptable to a large number of sites and programs. Of course, this is a pragmatic way.
