Out of curiosity, are you using the regular VGA port on the card, or the 
DVI->VGA adapter with the monitor plugged into the DVI port on the card? 
(I'm guessing you're using a CRT monitor.) I don't know if that will 
help, but I know that with XF86 4.1.0, I had to plug my monitor into the 
 DVI port on my VE with the DVI->VGA adapter, but XF86 4.2.0 worked 
without the adapter. Perhaps this is what's happening. It sounds like 
it's trying to use an LCD monitor.

In any case, I haven't noticed any problems here with X 4.2.99.902 + 
DRI-CVS on my VE.
