Mantashe accuses Vavi of undermining ANC's mediation

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe has come out guns blazing, accusing
embattled COSATU general-secretary Zwelinzima Vavi of "undoing" the work of
an ANC-led task team which is seeking to mediate in COSATU.

However, Mantashe said the resolution of the challenges facing trade union
federation COSATU rests with COSATU itself.

Addressing the media on the outcomes of the party's national executive
committee (NEC) at Luthuli House, Joburg, today, Mantashe said: "The NEC
received a report on the work being done by the ANC task team established to
support COSATU. "The meeting reaffirmed its position that a strong and
united COSATU is in the interest of the ANC and South Africa as a whole."

Mantashe said it was dangerous for Vavi to call a press conference and
divulge that the trade union federation had no money.

On Sunday, Vavi called a media briefing saying he was not resigning from
COSATU.

"This is a deliberate act of defiance on my part, even if in the end it
turns out to be symbolic," Vavi said.

"It sends a message to workers that we must refuse to hand the organisation
over on a platter, and must not only walk away when all alternatives to
rescue it have been exhausted."

Mantashe said the ANC-led task team will continue to do what it can do.

Asked if COSATU's central executive committee (CEC) meeting currently
underway will be correct to expel Vavi, Mantashe said: "Expelling is the
easiest bit. complex part is, after that what happens?"

Vavi has boycotted the meeting for a second time. Vavi's fate is likely to
top the agenda of the two-day CEC meeting.

Mantashe said the way COSATU deals with its problems "is like when you have
a chronic disease and you say you're bewitched".

Mantashe also lashed out at the National Union of Metalworkers of SA,
saying: "I don't recall, in the life time of COSATU, NUMSA winning an
ideological debate. even now, they are walking away".
