SAUS Statement, 23 August 2016 The South African Union of Students (SAUS) has noted with disgust The Cheating and Discriminate Act by the University of Free State SAUS has learnt that an Auditing paper written today, 23/08/2016 at the UFS had both English and Afrikaans versions. The English version contained questions and Afrikaans version containing answers. This is highest form of racism and discrimination, whilst other students spend sleepless nights studying in order to get good marks their white counterparts sip on whiskey knowing that the University will do the work for them. It is really shocking and disturbing that 22 years in to democracy we still find acts of racism in our institutions. SAUS has always believed the use of Afrikaans in our institutions as sign of discrimination - an exclusive and racist approach to maintain white supremacy - hence our call for the scrapping of Afrikaans as medium of instruction. People must be taught using a language which they understand better, and Afri-forum must stop using courts to entrench and protect white supremacy. Believing in the principle of building a non-racial society, SAUS recommits to fight and ultimately uproot this ugly animal in our institutions. The legacy of the then VC Prof Jonathan Jansen of perpetuating white supremacy and anti-black racism must be rooted out. He was not passionate about development of African Languages for the benefit of indigenous people and SA development agenda. This is from the premise that this institution harbours racism, and no action has been taken to transform this institution regardless of numerous calls we have made as student leaders. We have already requested the government (DHET) to appeal against court ruling on the Afri-forum case on the Language policy. We further encourage the DHET to use this as basis for their appeal. SAUS will be sending a delegation to UFS to meet with student leaders and management. Ours is that the perpetrators of these Racist Acts don't deserve to be in our institutions, and must appear before the Law. WSU and UKZN Situation South African Union of Students calls on both WSU and UKZN management to act swiftly and resolve their institutional challenges respectively. SAUS has always believed in the spirit of discussion. The act of UKZN Vice chancellor Dr Albert van Jaarsveld running away from student leadership is very disturbing and inexplicable. This is what leads to unnecessary protest in our institutions. Solutions to any challenge will never be found on stay away, but through engagement of both affected stake holders. We would also like to warn WSU vice chancellor Prof Rob Midgley that arresting student leaders and their leadership has never resolved any challenge; rather it is an old tactic employed by apartheid government which never succeeded against the will of the People. The State/Institutions must not use Police and courts to silence student voices. As SAUS we support any action taken by SRCs and students in general. However we condemn any form of burning and arson of University Buildings, for this does not yield any revolutionary results. On Fees SAUS will be convening a special Extended National Executive Committee meeting to consolidate a national list of grievance and cement our compromise position of 0% fee increase for the year 2017. We must explicitly put it clear that 0% is indeed a compromise because our call and generational mission remains that of Free Quality Education. As we await the government to announce, we must confirm that students are ready on the Ground. For more information contact: Avela Mjajubana Sthe Ndlovu SAUS President SAUS Sec.
