Morning Star.png Rousseff's Allies 'Optimistic' as Lawyers Launch Defence The Morning Star, London, 27 August 2016 Suspended Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff's lawyers launched her defence against a hostile Senate yesterday in what her predecessor called "the week of national shame." Senator Paulo Paim - of Ms Rousseff's Workers' Party - said: "They are condemning an innocent," just before the session. Senator Gleisi Hoffman expressed optimism that the legislative coup could still be defeated. "I think it's possible to reverse the process because there are senators who, even though they've shown they favour impeachment, have said they could change their minds," she said. Former president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva told a rally in Niteroi on Thursday: "Today they begin to tear up the constitution. It embarrasses me that the senate, which should be debating the interests of the Brazilian people and workers, is discussing the conviction of an innocent person." Ms Rousseff will testify on Monday, just before the senate votes on her impeachment.
