>From the terminal you should be able to shutdown or reboot by running 'sudo
poweroff' or 'sudo reboot' respectively. I'm not sure why it's not letting
you log in. Try changing your password at the command prompt to something
really simple without any crazy symbols in. Also if you have a strange
keyboard like dvorak then try creating a password you can type in qwerty in
case it's reset the gnome keyboard settings.
