sd is the older scsi-disk driver, ssd is the new scsi-disk driver (part of the leadville driver package) that allowed for more than 256 luns per target...
We've had systems that used the sd drivers until we upgraded to newer, sun provided drivers for qlogic / emulex cards, which then were using the ssd driver.
