That problem is half-solved by having it's own processor, so it's a bit like acessing a proprietary web-site with your Free Software browser. I surely would love that those firmwares weren't proprietary, but it's still quite a long way in the good path to have a Free Software operating system and (though still sucky) telephony software that talks via modem to those other independent processors.
