In my testing, if no hostname is supplied in /etc/tmdns.conf, then this is not necessary, see the thread: DHCP Client in Mandrake 9.1 RC1. In this case, tmdns will provide reverse lookups for the current hostname (if there is a NIC present which thinks it has a cable attached, not sure, and cannot test, what happens with no NIC or NIC with no cable).
