Good point. For sure, both are AMD. I'll give the CTRL+ALT+<F-keys> a try.
I did try a Debian 9.4 Live Gnome CD, but it would only load with Secure Boot disabled, the touch-pad would not work, and it really seemed to be glitchy. Since this is a new machine, I really want to at least get to the current stable distribution.
Thanks for the follow-up suggestion. I see MX is getting a lot of interest on DistroWatch, they're claiming advanced xorg drivers, and the 5.4 kernel. Won't hurt to give it a ride.
