Yes, that sounds like you don't have a functional kernel build system on
that machine at all (although you're building other modules, so it must be
something more subtle).  config.log should have details about what failed
when it tried to use the kernel build system.  I can confirm that m-a
works fine on my system with the latest unstable kernel.
