Dear Gender Gap: I am writing to share that Art+Feminism has released a new report (of which I am a co-lead) that may be of interest to the group - Unreliable Guidelines - I'll paste the announcement and link below. Apologies for cross-posting. In any case, I do invite you to read and share.
Our findings, particularly around issues of consensus -- "silence is consensus" -- and lack of rigor in the guidelines in these three languages are painful to name and relevant for issues this group has grappled with over the years. The report also identifies the important work of trainers and proposes several recommendations. Early on in the project I had the benefit of an email conversation with User:SarahSV, who was supportive of the research, and it's with sadness that I share the final report only after learning of her passing. Condolences to all who knew her. I hope that this report can be seen as engaging with the spirit of the initiatives of which she was involved, and also Adrianne Wadewitz (whom I had the benefit of learning Wikipedia with at an edit-a-thon in 2011), and others in the movement who have passed on. We will hopefully have opportunities to present the report at future convening, but until then, are available by email. What would you like to see us do next? Warm regards, Monika (on behalf of Monika Sengul-Jones, Amber Berson and Melissa Tamani). -- New report released: Unreliable Guidelines and marginalized communities in English Art+Feminism is pleased to announce the release of *Unreliable Guidelines: Reliable Sources and Marginalized Communities in French, English and Spanish Wikipedia*, the report for our inaugural research project Reading Together: Reliability and Multilingual Global Communities. The project used an intersectional feminist methodology to address how Wikipedia trainers involved in the Art+Feminism movement approach the reliable source guidelines in French, English and Spanish Wikipedias. Rigorous analysis ends with recommendations for more inclusive and diverse Wikipedias. This research was led by Amber Berson, Monika Sengul-Jones and Melissa Tamani and was partially funded by Wikicred. The report is initially available in English.
