I plugged it in before installing ubuntu on the vague hope that it would detect it and install it itself. In finding out which usb device it was, I unplugged it, ran lsusb, replugged it, ran lsusb again. So I tried it both ways. I've also rebooted the machine since installing nut so that may have contributed.
