Canadian ISPs Could Take On Big Brother Role
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/08/28/0344221

QGambit writes: "C|Net is reporting that the Canadian Government is
considering a proposal that [0]would force ISPs to keep logs of web
browsing for up to 6 months, allow police to get search warrants
allowing them to find 'hidden electronic and digital devices' and ban
the possession of computer viruses. Canada and the U.S. have both
endorsed this proposal, contained in a cybercrime treaty of the Council
of Europe. Both countries are non-voting members of the Council.
[1]George Radwanski, Canada's privacy commissioner has not yet

HP Drops Microsoft Word in Favor of WordPerfect
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/08/28/0121228

nexex points to this [0]Financial Times article, which says that HP has
dropped Microsoft Word from the software lineup in the personal
computers it sells to customers. From the article: "The move follows a
decision last week by [1]Dell Computer, the number two PC maker, to
replace Microsoft software. Both companies said they would offer
WordPerfect productivity software from [2]Corel of Canada instead of
    Microsoft's Works, a scaled-down version of its top-selling Office
software." Nexex writes:"I think it should be noted, [3]MS Works does
include the full version of Word."

Scientists Discover What Makes Geckos Stick
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/08/27/2129246

Scratch-O-Matic writes "[0]This story at [1]CNN explains how gecko feet
are sticky due to an electro-mechanical phenomenon rather than a
chemical glue, as had been previously assumed. The gecko is one of just
a few animals capable of climbing vertical and beyond-vertical surfaces
that are smooth and dry. Researchers have discovered that the secret to
the adhesion lies in millions of tiny hairs called 'setae.' Each hair
is the width of two human hairs, and contains about 1000 little pads at
the end. The pads are so tiny that they actually cling to the surface
at the molecular level, due to van der Waal forces. A gecko using all
of its setae and pads at the same time could support 280 pounds. Seems
to me that his should be easily replicated in the coming age of
nanotechnology." Other readers point to the AP story, as [2]carried by

Net Traffic Shocks Mimic Earthquakes
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/08/27/1819209

belphegor writes "[0]Technology Research News is running an [1]article
describing research linking the similarties between Earthquakes and
Internet traffic. By pinging hosts across the network, researchers
'were able to measure frequent changes in Internet congestion...results
showed that the Internet, like the earth's network of faults, exhibits
criticality -- a condition of sudden and drastic change. "Sudden
drastic congestion leads to a large value of the round trip time of the
ping signal, which is identified with a main shock," said Abe. The
researchers referred to these sudden, drastic traffic changes as
Internetquakes.' They also saw 'aftershocks' that can be mathematically
described in a similar manner to the seismic ones more familiar to many
    Californians."

Sony Kills Betamax
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/08/27/1610252

Hiawatha writes "Years after losing its grip on the consumer VCR
market, Sony has announced that it will [0]discontinue the Betamax
format. "With digital machines and other new recording formats taking
hold in the market, demand has continued to decline and it has become
difficult to secure parts," Sony said in a statement." Finally.
Although this is the prototypical example of good technology outdone by
better marketing, it's an example of a company being stupidly obstinate
about wanting to own a system, and shooting themselves in the foot.
Update: 08/27 17:52 GMT by [1]H: Yes, they were successful in
broadcast, and to some degree overseas - but the commercial success was
still severely limited to, say, VHS.

Disappearing/Reappearing Topics and Sections
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/27/0542208

I've recently installed Slash 2.2.6 and for the most part, it's running
beautifully. The only thing that's succeeding in driving me nuts is
that my defined topics and sections appear in the dropdown menu
inconsistenly when posting a new article or when searching. So one
minute all topics/sections will appear, and for the next new article,
one or two may appear, and the next, all but one appears, but it
happens with no rhyme or reason. All topics and sections are correctly
listed in their respective backslash sections and in the database
table. I've restarted slash (apache and the server), but it didn't
help. Is it one of those things that are handled by some hidden
scheduled process, like the authors table? Any suggestions anyone can
offer would be greatly appreciated. Jasmine

Colors not saving
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/26/0728247

I just installed slash, and whenever I try to customize the colors on
my site, I pick them out, enter them into the boxen, then click either
"preview" or "save" and am summarily presented with the story list (not
to mention an unchanged site). Is there something I'm missing here?

Only new headlines
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/22/0558213

I have two suggestions that I think would be really cool. I've listed
them after a short story of what prompted the ideas. I keep a mozilla
window with slashdot in it on one of my virtual desktops all the time.
I open interesting stories in their own tab leaving the first tab
solely for slashdot. Whenever I refersh the page I have to scroll down
to find the last headline that I read and start reading up from there.
Sound familiar? Sometimes it gets complicated when I don't find the
last headline I read and have to go back and look at the older stuff
for what I might have missed. My quick fix suggestion first then, my
really cool suggestion. 1) Previous 10 headlines button. 2) A
Last_Headline_Read field stored in my cookie. If the site remembers
that I'm logged in it should be able to remember the last headline that
I read. It would be cool if, when I refreshed the page, slashdot only
displayed the new headlines! Just a thought...    Thanks
for the awesome work you guys do. --Tres

Saving user settings in the Slash DB: WHERE?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/22/0555242

On the "Customize Homepage" page (users.pl?op=edithome) does anyone
know where it saves the exclusion filters (exclude by topic, section,
or author) in the database? I've figured out all the other settings
    except these.

Exporting a Slash site between Machines?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/19/0547211

I have a fully customized Slash site on one machine, and I need to
migrate it to a different machine. How can this be done? Do I just TAR
up the directories and move them over? And if so, what files/db entries
do I need to modify with the new machine/site name? Any help is
    appreciated. Thanks, QWade

Displaying Number of Comments in Storylink,Index,D
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/16/0544259

I've been trying to find the code that displays the number of comments
on a story. In looking at the template "storylink, index, default", I see
    [% links.join(' | ') %] which I assume is the item that displays the
"(Read more | X comments...)" Where the heck to do find this?
