Australian Federal Court Overturns Legal Modchip Sales
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/31/0657224

An anonymous reader writes "Yesterday, the Australian Federal Court
overruled the [0]previous ruling on modchips in Australia. I am pretty
sure the overruled case is the mainstay for the 'legal' use of modchips
in Australia (predominantly Linux on the Xbox). Haven't seen this hit
the media yet, with the exception of the Australian Financial Review
referring to it in the Free Trade Agreement context. The [1]ruling can
be found here. Although not a lawyer, it appears the original judgement
was made on the basis that Sony did not provide a copy protection
system. Also noted is that there is limited commercial use for the mod
other than circumvention. Wonder what will happen to modchips for the
Xbox, given that it can be argued that running Linux could easily be
    seen as commercial."

Also, check out the new [1]Java bindings to OpenGL. OGL 1.5 is a step

The RIAA Hit List - A Pattern Emerges?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/31/0056254

Desus writes "[0]Slyck News seems to have found a pattern in just what
files the RIAA is searching on to find offenders. It seems the RIAA is
targeting a wide reach of music, including Hip Hop, R&B, Rap, Rock, Pop
and Country songs. Artists such as Ludacris, Michael Jackson, NAS,
Busta Rhymes, Keith Sweat and Musiq were very common throughout the
subpoenas. They've even created a helpful [1]chart showing exactly what
artists and songs seem to get one flagged."

Titania Nanotubes for Hydrogen Sensors?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/30/1817203

[0]Roland Piquepaille writes "Everybody is talking about carbon
nanotubes these days. But what about titania nanotubes? Penn State
researchers think they have a great potential for sensing hydrogen .
According to this [1]news release, "titania nanotubes are 1500 times
better than the next best material for sensing hydrogen and may be one
of the first examples of materials properties changing dramatically
when crossing the border between real world sizes and nanoscopic
dimensions, according to a Penn State materials scientist." And now,
the very good news: titania nanotubes are cheap. So they'll be used in
industrial quality control in food plants and as weapons against
terrorism. [2]My summary contains some more details."

What Should a Community Computer Lab Offer?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/30/2149238

Ballresin asks: "A local computer company is expanding and including a
computer lab in their setup, and they want me to come in as its
Administrator. I am supposed to be giving them input on what to
teach/host. What does Slashdot think a medium sized tourist town
(Okoboji, Spirit Lake, Arnolds Park, Iowa) should have to offer to the
locals? I was thinking something along the lines of 'How to Use Windows
101' and 'How to Use Office 101'. My compatriots want to offer some
off-the-wall classes such as 'Hacker Ethics: Why and How' and a few
other odd classes. I have polled people in the area, which resulted the
discovery that 80% of them are from out of town, so don't really care.
What you guys think; What kind of classes or what games/LAN party
setups should a new, small business offer? Any ideas/input is greatly
    appreciated."

Predicting H.S. Dropouts With Pervasive Databases
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/30/2132240

rhadamanthus writes "As seen on the Houston Chronicle: 'With a new
computer database available at every campus this fall, teachers can
keep [0]a virtual eye on every student and identify those at risk of
leaving. For the first time, educators can look up a student's
attendance, discipline, immigration status, grades, and test scores at
one source and use that information to predict dropouts. ... "All
students will know someone is watching them, tracking them, and is
interested in their success," school board member Laurie Bricker said
at a press conference today.' Hooray for surveillance in the [1]HISD."

File Integrity Command & Control 1.0
http://freshmeat.net/releases/131063/

File Integrity Command & Control (FICC) helps system administrators
manage multiple Tripwire installations across their network. It
maintains MD5 hashes for the three key Tripwire files (the config file,
executable, and TW database) for every system it monitors. Using SCP,
it retrieves these key files from each system and compares the computed
signature against the signatures in the FICC signature database. If all
three signatures match the database, FICC then connects to the host via
SSH and runs Tripwire. In the event that any of the signatures do not
match the database or Tripwire detects files changes, an email is sent
to the "FICC administrator" of the system in question.

Slash on server running Livejournal?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/24/0035257

Maybe this is the wrong venue to ask in, and I'm sorry if it is, but
this question has been nagging me for about the past week or so. I have
a personal server running Slackware 8 with a custom-compiled Apache
1.3.27 (with the appropriate mod_perl) and MySQL 4.0.13. This server is
currently running the LiveJournal server code and works quite well at
this. I'm interested in attempting to set up slash for personal use
(the Livejournal code is running for personal use as well), and herein
lies the question. Can slash be run on the same server in another
VirtualHost without having a separate apache installation/process and
doing some fancy trick with mod_rewrite? Or am I asking too much? I
will be happy to provide any further info anyone needs through e-mail
(the e-mail link above is NOT spam-armored at all).

Best hosting service for Slash?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/07/23/1449209

I'm going to be doing some "big things" with Slashcode but am
interested in going through someone to set up Slashcode and the server,
so that I can just right in and start building the site. What are the
best hosting services out there? Will they set up Slash for me? What
kinds of experiences have people had?

Dissociated Press goes Slash

So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish!
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/13/1816237

All things come to an end and its been a wonderful ride. Today is my
last day at OSDN and this will be the last thing I will be posting on
Slashcode. It has been fun working on Slash for the last few years and
I have enjoyed working with the Slash community (tf32, ACS, vladinator,
ericdano, and many more that I am forgetting). On Monday I start work
for MySQL so I will be a bit busy for a while but I expect you will
still see Slash stuff coming from me in the future. I will continue to
be in #slash for a while, and you can still always reach me via email.
The best of luck with you and your sites, it has been great!

Spottedrabbit.com

Multiple Instances
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/06/10/1543202

Please indulge a beginner. I currently have slashcode setup on a single
domain with its own IP address (wwwntm.biz) for testing purposes. Here
is my dilemma. I am setting up a community similar to yahoo/geocities.
It will be www.newthoughtcommunity.net and the individual communities
    will be sub-domains of this domain ex;
    community1.newthoughtcommunity.net, community2.newthoughtcommunity.net
    etc Residents of the communities will be set up as users ex;
    http://community1.newthoughtcommunity.net/user1,
    http://community1.newthoughtcommunity.net/user2 etc. Directory is:
    /home /newthoughtcommunity /community1 /community2 I know that slash
can be setup with virtual domains, but can sub domains have there own
instance. I need each community to have their own slash. Also. When I
set up a new instance of slash for a virtual domain, do I use the same
database and administrator with a new virtual user when I run
DBI::Password? Thank you for any help you can offer John --John Macuga
