Very interesting indeed. About a year after Rivendell built up my orange 60cm Appaloosa, I was on a “Bike Around the Buttes” ride in Northern California and my seat post began gradually slipping down. I tightened it a bit more at a mid-ride rest stop, and it broke in two…. without much torque at all. I was amazed…..Luckily, I was able to “borrow” a less essential but same size bolt from my pannier rack, and everything has been fine the last few years. Is it possible that Rivendell received a bad batch of bolts? Odd….

I also snapped the seat binder bolt on my new Platypus. No amount of tightening would keep my post from sliding. I posted about this on Reddit and somebody told me that I needed to grease the threads. When I tried to remove the bolt it snapped. I replaced with a random bolt from a hardware store and used grease. Hasn't slipped again.

My greased Roadini binder failed almost immediately with very little torque applied. Seems it was slightly too short for the job. Replaced with this bolt and this nut. The new bolt is ever so slightly long for the application but it works great. The blackish nut is not my preference but I live in the country and was eager to source a robust solution. (And not much of it shows as most of it is hidden inside the seat lug.) Delivered, this was a $30 resolution (which makes me feel foolish); Rivendell could do so much better here.

I have never snapped a binder bolt but FWIW when I had some slipping on my Atlantis post, my LBS spun the inside of the seat tube with a flex hone attachment on their drill and that helped a lot.

I have a bad habit of snapping the original binder bolt when making adjustments for fit. I just keep a bunch spares around and stash one with the tools/spare tube for when I ride.

Same thing happened on my brand new Platypus last year. Seatpost was slipping and twisting and I overtightened it and snapped the bolt. Replaced it with a spare from my bolts tray and it hasn't slipped in almost a year.

The binder bolt snapped because the seatpost was too small. The bolt and post need to be replaced so this doesn't happen again.

I am referring to a Nitto seat post binder bolt that you suggested to replace the stock one on my Clem. I am seeing from your web link for a Nitto S65 Crystal Fellow Seat Post. ...or am I missing something ?

I've come across several 26.8-post Rivs where the stock post actually seemed to be 26.7. If you're using the stocker I'd ditch it for a Nitto.

Agreed, thanks for sharing the information Danny. Per suggestion by Alex W, I also will swap the bolt for a black socket cap instead of stainless. Stronger but no galling..

Very good to know. I thank-you for the information. I think I will grease mine as a precaution. I'm sure that Igor appreciates it, as well.

I’ve had that happen on a new Riv before.

This is from a Riv newsletter last year:

Also, make sure to grease the binder bolts before you tighten them down. They ship to us dry and they have a tendency to gall and not tighten down enough unless they're greased up.

I was installing the seatpost on my wife’s new Clem, and could not get the seatpost to stop turning. Eventually I broke the bolt.

I remember I had this occur on an old Clem I had as well.
