I had in my home directory a file ~/.sage/sagerc which added a directory in front of Sage's PATH, and that directory had a customised version of pari in it which does not work well with the version of cypari in the current release. Removing that file (whose need had passed anyway since Sage included pari-2.11.1) sorted out the problems.
