Re: Trouble with symlinked conffiles
Jan-Pascal van Best wrote: Why can't you just put the file in /etc/tomcat5.5/policy? I could, but it's configuration for the solr web application, No, it's a security policy file for Tomcat, and those go in the Tomcat conf directory as any Tomcat administrator should know (and as documented in the README). I don't think it would be a huge problem. This is similar to packages that put their conffiles in /etc/cron.daily, /etc/logrotate.d and so on. Also, the upgrade path would still be broken. I fail to see the problem, could you detail it a bit? Bug#515569: icedove: message body not displayed
Package: icedove Version: 2.0.0.19-1 Severity: normal Icedove occasionally stops displaying message bodies. When this happens, the content pane is just blank, for all messages in all folders in all of my accounts (all three are IMAP). Message lists are still shown and updated, for both new and old messages, and the headers for the selected message are displayed as usual, but the content is just blank. Pressing Reply brings up a composer with the quoted message text (that was previously invisible), so the message is being downloaded, it's just not shown. Package: akonadi-server Version: 1.1.1-1 Severity: important The dependency on mysql-server means that at least *two* mysqld processes will be started: one system-wide and one embedded in Akonadi (per KDE user!). That is already two more than I want, but definitely one more than asked for. akonadi-server should be able to start just the embedded MySQL, similar to how various packages start embedded Tomcat or Jetty instances without depending on the system-wide server package. (Perhaps some refactoring of the MySQL packages is needed?) Even better, it should use some more light-weight embedded database engine. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.28.1-melech (SMP w/2 CPU cores; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=sv_SE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=sv_SE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages akonadi-server depends on: ii libakonadiprivate1 1.1.1-1 libraries for the Akonadi PIM stor ii libboost-program-options1.34 1.34.1-14 program options library for C++ ii libc62.7-18 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgcc1 1:4.3.2-1.1 GCC support library ii libqt4-dbus 4.4.3-2 Qt 4 D-Bus module ii libqt4-sql-mysql 4.4.3-2 Qt 4 MySQL database driver ii libqtcore4 4.4.3-2 Qt 4 core module ii libstdc++6 4.3.2-1.1 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii mysql-server 5.1.30-2MySQL database server (metapackage ii mysql-server-5.1 [mysql-serv 5.1.30-2MySQL database server binaries akonadi-server recommends no packages. akonadi-server suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. There is no automatic way to use the system-wide mysql, but you are free to code one and include it upstream. Akonadi should probably allow configuration of other data sources, if it doesn't already. But that's a different issue. About having two mysqld running, this is because the mysql-server-* packages launch it by default. There is nothing the pkg-kde team can do about it, feel free to bug the mysql packaging team to get a package installing /usr/sbin/mysqld without the init scripts. Absolutely, I will open a bug. Bug#513210: qemu: keyboard layout not detected

Re: RFD: Maven Repository Specification
Hi, Torsten Werner wrote: I have written a proposal on how to ship Maven pom files in Debian packages at http://wiki.debian.org/Java/MavenRepoSpec. I would to get an early feedback from you. This part: In a later upstream version 'c' adds another depends 'i' and that means that we have to change all reverse depends of 'c' including 'a' (like adding i.jar to DEB_JARS in debian/rules). Only if 'i' is really a build-dep of 'a', in which case we will have to update the build-deps of 'a' anyway, contrary to the next sentence: But Maven will do this automatically for us and we do not have to touch reverse depends of any package when the dependencies change. - install the artifacts into a Maven repository at /usr/share/maven-repo/ - create unversioned symlinks to binary jars in /usr/share/java/ This is way too invasive and Maven-centric. The build system should not dictate where files are installed in Debian. I would prefer the other way around: symlinks in $REPO, and files installed elsewhere (for example the current locations, to avoid moving existing files around). There are several projects that publish Maven artefacts but are not built with Maven, for instance Grails. There is no point in forcing its artefacts into /usr/share/maven-repo. A related issue is coexistence with Ivy and Gradle, which I think we must have in Debian soon. Ivy can handle Maven repositories just fine so I cannot think of any real problems. But it might be useful to install Ivy descriptors (perhaps in addition to Maven poms) in a native Ivy repository, since its dependency model is much more refined. Great to see that you've managed to take on this important task, I think it can lead to great progress in Debian Java. Bug#502333: grub-pc: Search uuid in LVM crashes the bootloader
found 502333 1.96+20080724-12 severity 502333 grave thanks I just hit this, it rendered my system unbootable. Raising severity accordingly. The system is a Thinkpad T61. It has been working just fine, with no significant recent configuration changes. The grub version was untouched since six weeks (upgraded from -11 to -12), and since then I've installed and removed kernels and rebooted several times. I have not touched the grub configuration in between. Yesterday I installed a new kernel (2.6.28), and on the next boot, Grub started immediately rebooting after displaying the Welcome to Grub! message. Commenting out all three search commands in /boot/grub/grub.cfg fixed the problem. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 szczepiq wrote: Maven jetty:run uses app resources (jsp, etc.) directly from the source tree. At least this is the default behavior and I'm not sure you can configure it You can in fact configure everything. To change the web app source dir, you can set the webAppSourceDirectory task property to some other location. For the most fine-grained control you can populate the webAppConfig property with a JettyPluginWebAppContext object. The Jetty plugin has a little quirk in this area: AbstractJettyRunTask.configureWebApplication() does not configure the webAppConfig object if it has already been created, so if you create it in your build script, you have to configure all the default properties yourself. For example the contextPath property is ignored. Perhaps I should file a bug report. Pantelis Koukousoulas wrote: Since we're talking about Debian packaging (right?), the Debian BTS should be the obvious choice IMHO. I 'm not so sure about that. The fact is that this eclipse package is not yet even in experimental There are Eclipse packages in Debian already, why don't you just file bugs (with severity wishlist for example) for improvements that you intend to make? Similar projects like the experimental kde4-trunk packages also don't use the debian BTS likely for the same reason. Those were new source packages. The fact that the KDE team seemed to believe they could opt out of the Debian BTS even after uploading [1] does not make it right IMHO. Re: How to package a WAR as a .deb
Hi, Johannes Ernst wrote: I have a self-contained web application built into a WAR file, say foo.war. I'm trying to package it up as foo.deb on a custom server so users of that web application can simply use apt-get install foo to get this application deployed on their application server, say Tomcat. I'm not sure if that's really the option that makes most sense, although it could be done. Deploying a war file could be as simple as dropping it in /var/lib/tomcat5.5/webapps, so there is not a lot of room for simplification here, but plenty of complexity. If you want to build Debian packages, the Debian New Maintainer's Guide will get you started. Once you read that, feel free to come back if you have more questions. But chances are you'll realise that some other solution is more suitable. I have been attempting to use Tomcat's tomcat5.5-webapps package as a template for how to do that, as it nicely restarts Tomcat upon install / uninstall. Yes, but there is no need to restart Tomcat just to deploy a regular webapp. Cheers, Marcus -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#506018: velocity: adds libraries to /usr/share/ant/lib
Package: velocity Version: 1.4-5 Severity: serious velocity adds a bunch of symlinks to the Ant library directory. This adds those libraries to the core class loader of Ant, thus overriding any classpath specified in the build script. For instance I just spent hours tracking down a build failure caused by unwanted inclusion of jdom0.jar instead of the JDOM 1.1 version in my project. ~$ dpkg -L velocity |grep ant/lib/ /usr/share/ant/lib/werken.xpath.jar /usr/share/ant/lib/commons-collections.jar /usr/share/ant/lib/jdom0.jar /usr/share/ant/lib/logkit.jar /usr/share/ant/lib/velocity.jar It seems to me that the Ant lib directory should be reserved for Ant itself. Other things should be added to the classpath by the user/admin as neeeded. It is especially bad if a package adds symlinks for jars belonging to other packages. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.27.5-melech (SMP w/2 CPU cores; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=sv_SE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=sv_SE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages velocity depends on: ii ant 1.7.0-6 Java based build tool like make ii default-jre [java2-runtime] 1.5-30 Standard Java or Java compatible R ii ibm-j2sdk1.6 [java2-runtime] 1.6.0 Java(TM) JDK, Standard Edition, IB ii jamvm [java1-runtime]1.5.1-3 virtual machine which conforms to ii java-gcj-compat [java2-runti 1.0.78-2Java runtime environment using GIJ ii libbcel-java 5.2-3 Analyze, create, and manipulate (b ii libcommons-collections-java 2.1.1-8 A set of abstract data type interf ii libjdom0-java0.9b-3 lightweight and fast library using ii liblogkit-java 1.2.2-9 Lightweight and fast designed logg ii libwerken.xpath-java 0.9.4-9 JDOM XPath Engine ii libxerces2-java 2.9.1-2 Validating XML parser for Java wit ii openjdk-6-jre [java2-runtime 6b12-1~exp1 OpenJDK Java runtime, using Hotspo ii sun-java5-jre [java2-runtime 1.5.0-16-3 Sun Java(TM) Runtime Environment ( ii sun-java6-jre [java2-runtime 6-07-4 Sun Java(TM) Runtime Environment ( velocity recommends no packages. Bug#506014: xulrunner-1.9: conflicts with j2re1.4
Package: xulrunner-1.9 Version: 1.9.0.3-1 Severity: important xulrunner prevents me from installing a Java 2 runtime environment that I need for purposes completely unrelated to xulrunner. The changelog says: Conflict with j2re1.4. Even when solving the infinite loop issue, new issues were showing up one after another with this old and obviously broken plugin. But j2re1.4 is not a browser plugin, it's a virtual package signifying a Java runtime environment. I need it for completely different purposes and don't think it should force me to uninstall Iceweasel. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.27.5-melech (SMP w/2 CPU cores; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=sv_SE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=sv_SE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages xulrunner-1.9 depends on: ii libatk1.0-01.22.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libbz2-1.0 1.0.5-1 high-quality block-sorting file co ii libc6 2.7-15GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.6.4-6.1 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libfontconfig1 2.6.0-1 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.3.7-2 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgcc11:4.3.2-1 GCC support library ii libglib2.0-0 2.16.6-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-02.12.11-4 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libhunspell-1.2-0 1.2.6-1 spell checker and morphological an ii libjpeg62 6b-14 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii liblcms1 1.17.dfsg-1 Color management library ii libmozjs1d 1.9.0.3-1 The Mozilla SpiderMonkey JavaScrip ii libnspr4-0d4.7.1-4 NetScape Portable Runtime Library ii libnss3-1d 3.12.0-5 Network Security Service libraries ii libpango1.0-0 1.20.5-3 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpng12-0 1.2.27-2 PNG library - runtime ii libreadline5 5.2-3 GNU readline and history libraries ii libsqlite3-0 3.5.9-5 SQLite 3 shared library ii libstartup-notificatio 0.9-1 library for program launch feedbac ii libstdc++6 4.3.2-1 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 2:1.1.5-2 X11 client-side library ii libxrender11:0.9.4-2 X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxt6 1:1.0.5-3 X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12 compression library - runtime xulrunner-1.9 recommends no packages.
