It seems that the problem is related to

[CentOS] Is kernel-3.10.0-693.11.6.el7 tested with old hardware?

[CentOS] Spurious Segmentation Fault after upgrade to 7.4

2017-09-15 Thread Gerhard Schneider

After upgrading approx. 50 machines to 7.4 we discovered a reproducible
SegFault of one of our commercial programs we use.

This SegFault does not occur on CentOS 7.3 and it occurs only on Xeon
E3-1230 V3, Xeon E5-2690 and Xeon E5-2697 v2.

It does NOT occur on Xeon E5-2697 v3 and Xeon E3-1231 v3, AMD Ryzen and
older Core I7-9xx.

It is not dependent of the kernel, we switched back to an CentOS 7.3
kernel and forward to an Linux 4.11 kernel without success.

When we run CentOS 7.3 as a guest on CentOS 7.4 in VMWare on affected
CPUs the Segmentation Fault does not occur.

Is there any processor specific optimzation dependency on the 7.4 glibc
or any libraries I don't know? And what to do against it?

Thank you in advance!

Re: [CentOS] centos6 not using /etc/gdm/custom.conf

2011-07-22 Thread Gerhard Schneider
In later Fedora releases, GDM has become less and less functional:
configurability has been removed, more so as releases occur. From my
(known to be flaky) memory, that includes the ability to turn off the
silly list that exposes usernames right on the login screen, the
ability to assign your own wallpaper to the login screen, among other
 things.

Using gdm is getting harder and harder but you can try:

gconftool-2 --direct \
  --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults \
  --type bool --set /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list true

There are many features available via gconftool-2 or gconf-editor only.

[CentOS] Some thoughts about EL 6

2011-05-18 Thread Gerhard Schneider

Many people seem to wait for the announcement of CentOS 6.0, so I want
to share some test results I did with SL 6.0..

The actual 6.0 kernel can NOT allocate tape buffers when the server is
heavily loaded at least on some LSILogic hardware.
There is a big problem of slab buffer increase that can cause
reboot/freeze of the server under load. Reported by many and verified by
me :-(

So perhaps it's a good idea to wait for 6.1 for mission critical servers..

Re: [CentOS] Some thoughts about EL 6

2011-05-18 Thread Gerhard Schneider
Is there any bugzilla report for this?
 SL or redhat?

 Thx
 Rainer

Not from my side. I'm CentOS user - only testing 6.0

The tape issue has been discussed on the linux-scsi mailing list 6
months ago - including some fix - and there was a bug report for the
Ubuntu 2.6.32 kernel.

The slab issue has been discussed in the rhelv6-list in February.

Sorry, but the large servers I used for testing are back in business
with CentOS 5.6 after playing around for one week (it's my way to check
that issues are not hardware related).

Re: [CentOS] Some RAID-6 observations ... RHEL-6 vs CentOS-5.5

Sorry, I don't use CentOS 6 now so I cannot check, but:

Could it be that RHEL6 changed the default superblock mdadm is creating?
CentOS 5 is creating a 0.9 superblock. Some other OS are creating 1.2
per default. But you can change that on the command line.

If that's the case it's not a bug but a feature..

[CentOS] 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 NFS4 race conditions?

2010-12-06 Thread Gerhard Schneider

Are there any known race conditions with 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 x86_64 and
NFS4?

Today a user managed to shut down two identical Intel servers by copying
a simple text file via NFS4.

Reverting back to 17.1 made the error disappear.

On other non-identical hardware the error was not reproducible (so it
must be a combination of hardware and this special kernel revision).

Anybody interested in a kernel dump? It's only 16GB. I could install
kernel-debuginfo and try to get something out of the dump..
