I live in Missouri. I am a devoted Chihuahua fan!! I am disabled so am
home most of the time. My first Chihuahua was Rosey. It was love at first
sight. Rosey is five years old and two and a half pounds. Everyone thought she
had the liver shunt disease, but I had to have her. She is a sassy five year
old now. Shorthair mostly white with a little brown and blacj spots. I had
gallbladder surgery and stayed with a friend. She had just rescued a male
tricolor Chihuahua four pounds neglected/abused, he was afraid of everyone and
everything, he is five years old now was three when I got him. Neeko slept with
me everynight and when I went home He came with me. I still can not allow
others around him. I either hold him or put him in a different room. He has a
hip/back leg problem vet. says it could be a spinal issue or a brain issue.
Either way there is nothing we can do. He still squats because he can not hike.
He can not jump up on things his rear is too weak but he can jump down. He is
the love of my life. Then there is Cinnamon I am her fifth home. Her tail is
broken and bent in two places. She is my sweetheart.Very insecure and needy.
Very devoted to me. She is 3 years old and four pounds She is a shorthair and a
deep reddishbrown/cinnamon color. Then there is Missy. She is two years old.
three pounds She has asthma. She is a blue shorthair.Loves everyone and an
absolute little angel..
My latest addition is a longhaired white with a small stripe of black.
She is seven months old. Born with a bobtail. weighs about a pound and a half.
I love all my misfits with all my heart.

Your Gigi is lucky to have you also. I know what it means to spend time on the computer doing research for a sick animal to try and find the correct diagnosis. I had a spider Monkey for twelve years and the last two years of her life I was doing the very same thing. At first she was diagnosed as Cushings Didease. But in the end she was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor(specifically a prolactinoma.). It was a terrible two years . She passed in 2002 and it is still a difficult subject for meto talk about.A part of me died with Becky that day!I emailed primate vets all over the world and got many responses and suggestions. One vet diagnosed her correctly, from another country. Luckily I had a vet who listened to me and paid attention to the information I

Hello Mary,

Thank you for your introduction. It is good to hear that you love all 5 of your
Chi’s so very much. They are so fantastic and loving.
I’m very sorry to hear that some of your Chi’s had a bad life of abuse before
they came to you.
It’s horrible that people abuse animals. And how can you abuse a tiny Chi???
What are this for a people? They are monsters.
At least they live with you now and are loved very much.
You write that you are disabled. In wich way? Can’t you walk? Can you cope on
your own with your 5 Chihuahua’s in your home?
Do you have a photomap of your Chihuahua’s at “Chihuahuas”?
I do, have a photomap at “Chihuahuas” named: (A) Rita Wien. Vicky daughter
Liaa” with 7 photo’s in it. I hope to add more soon. I invite you to take a
look at my photomap.
The direct link is:

I am a devoted parrot-fan. But I’ve always been an animal-person. I like all
kinds of pets. I do have several parrots, conures and cockatiels and I do have
3 cats and my two Chihuahua’s.

I live in Missouri. I am a devoted Chihuahua fan!! I am disabled so am home
most of the time. My first Chihuahua was Rosey. It was love at first sight.
Rosey is five years old and two and a half pounds. Everyone thought she had
the liver shunt disease, but I had to have her. She is a sassy five year old
now. Shorthair mostly white with a little brown and blacj spots. I had
gallbladder surgery and stayed with a friend. She had just rescued a male
tricolor Chihuahua four pounds neglected/abused, he was afraid of everyone and
everything, he is five years old now was three when I got him. Neeko slept
with me everynight and when I went home He came with me. I still can not allow
others around him. I either hold him or put him in a different room. He has a
hip/back leg problem vet. says it could be a spinal issue or a brain issue.
Either way there is nothing we can do. He still squats because he can not
hike. He can not jump up on things his rear is too
weak but he can jump down. He is the love of my life. Then there is Cinnamon I
am her fifth home. Her tail is broken and bent in two places. She is my
sweetheart.Very insecure and needy. Very devoted to me. She is 3 years old and
four pounds She is a shorthair and a deep reddishbrown/cinnamon color. Then
there is Missy. She is two years old. three pounds She has asthma. She is a
blue shorthair.Loves everyone and an absolute little angel..
My latest addition is a longhaired white with a small stripe of black. She is
seven months old. Born with a bobtail. weighs about a pound and a half. I love
all my misfits with all my heart.

I have been on disability since 2006. I have Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) I
eas on dialysis for four years. In June they told me I would die if I did not
get a kidney in the next ninety days Then the end of August the 29 2008 I got a
kidney transplant. 2011 I had my gallbladder out then nine monyhs later they
took out both my native Kidneys(the ones I was born with) The cysts in the
kidneys kept getting larger to the point where it was interfering with my other
organs, breathing etc... I am also diabetic and have sleep apnea, I am also
being treated for Depression and anxiety. The dogs are my reason for being. I
actually can walk and get around better since they removed my kidneys. One
weighed 4 pounds and the other weighed 3 pounds. my nephrologist said I was
having twin kidneys.LOL I live alone and care for myself and my dogs. There are
some things I need help, mostly heavy work.

Hello Mary,

Thank you for your introduction.
It is good to hear that you love all 5 of your Chi’s so very much. They are so
fantastic and loving.
I’m very sorry to hear that some
of your Chi’s had a bad life of abuse before they came to you.
It’s horrible that people abuse
animals. And how can you abuse a tiny Chi??? What are this for a people? They
are monsters.
At least they live with you now
and are loved very much.
You write that you are disabled.
In wich way? Can’t you walk? Can you cope on your own with your 5 Chihuahua’s
in
your home?
Do you have a photomap of your
Chihuahua’s at “Chihuahuas”?
I do, have a photomap at
“Chihuahuas” named: (A) Rita Wien. Vicky daughter Liaa” with 7 photo’s in
it. I hope to add more soon. I invite you to take a look at my
photomap.

I am a devoted parrot-fan. But
I’ve always been an animal-person. I like all kinds of pets. I do have several
parrots, conures and cockatiels and I do have 3 cats and my two
Chihuahua’s.

Mary they are the most beautiful bunch of misfits I have ever seen! Lucky
for all of you, that you found each other. God knew just where he wanted
each one of them so they could be loved and taken care of when others would
have discarded them because they aren't perfect. That's how I feel about
Gigi, her BYB no longer wanted her because she couldn't produce any more
without a c-section (and she has several scars to prove it too) and passed
her on to a college kid that knew nothing at all about dogs, least of all a
chi, and she too only had her for a month, now I have her forever. Poor Gigi
had a hard time of when she surprised me and went into heat during the first
week that I got her, and then after the spay surgery, she started to have
seizures on and off for almost a year, until I finally figured out why,
thanks to everyone's input in this group and a lot of research, because 4
different vets didn't know why. She has been seizure free for many months
now and is truly a blessing in my life.

Princess too came into my life when I was going through a difficult time,
and she helped to pull me through it. Dogs are the best antidote for many
things that ail us, they give us a reason to go on and be there for them,
and I have always believed that God's hand is in it from the beginning for
both the human and the dogs.

opinion about this Little boy and his future. We are all praying for Gods will
for Tino and hope he will get well again. I question this shelter and it's care
of animals. Had I made the decision I would have waited for any surgery but is
now done so hopefully he will be better today.
When I adopted my poor little skinny cat, the shelter had me wait over 3 months
till she gained weight and healthy.
I will be thinking of you both today.
Hugs
Ann

With him already so sick and thin, the remaining effects of the anesthesia
that linger will make him sleep a lot. I don’t know if they would have
injected an local pain meds to the incision. Rest is what he needs right
now, and if he is in a little pain, he won’t feel it as he would if he was
fully awake. When I brought Dolly home from her hernia repair a month
ago…she woke up only a few times a day…a couple were when I had to give her
the meds…but she actually didn’t appear to be suffering and sleeping helps to
 heal faster.

Tomorrow your vet will be able to give you an honest assessment; I find it
very sad that a shelter would be so uncaring about an animal…what are they
sheltering them from??? Sheltering has to include food and water and a
little human interaction. From what you have written about this shelter, it
makes me wonder why they are a shelter at all.

I wish you and all your little ones a very good night’s sleep. Tino has many

That's the same thing that happened to Gigi after her spay. She refused to
drink anything. I had to syringe her too, and soak her dry kibble with warm
water to make it soft so she would eat it all and still get enough water from
it. Gigi refused to drink anything, even chicken broth, for three months!! I
gave her Pedialyte twice a day too, yet she ate and always wanted more. Then
one day I finally caught her drinking on her own. I really don't want to put
a damper on you anymore then what you have now, but after she started to
drink on her own, three months later, is when the weird behavior started and
that's when I found out she having Complex partial Seizures. I couldn't
believe how much her stomach had sunken in after the surgery, I think that
they may remove all the fluid from the bladder just before surgery so that
they don't gag on it during and after surgery.

That may not be the case with Tino, as a lot of dogs don't want to drink
right after anesthesia for some reason, yet they will eat, and drinking
 usually starts the next day.

No, not that dramatic. Not sores..more like brown, leathery
discolorations.and crusty ears..but not red. I suppose it could be a really
bad allergic reaction to fleas etc..best case scenario. He ate a little but
would not drink. Got a couple of syringes of water into him..Has not gone to
the bathroom since home so probably dehydrated. I am sure they did not give
any fluids at that so called vets

Unfortunately, all this shelter cares about is it rules and regulations.  They
don't do anything for them other than food and water for the first 7 days in
case their owners come for them.  This includes no baths, no nailcutting, no
medical care,,nothing.  Then when they are adopted, they will give them their
shots.  As far as neutering, you can't get them out of there without agreeing
to the neutering before you bring them home.  I argued until I was in tears,
but had to accept if I was going to have any chance of adopting, I had to agree
to the neutering before he came home.  I am surprised he made it to morning..I
wasn't sure.  He is not good, but he is alive..

necessary. Our pup with the liver probs has not been neutered yet. I want to
make sure his liver is good first. My adult girls are fixed so it's not a big
deal. My teeny Snookie is 1.8 pounds and the vet said she prob wouldn't make it
thru the surgery. She is almost 10 months and hasn't come into season. The vet
doesn't think she will. I am so sorry you are having to go thru this. The poor
little guy. Have you tried giving him nutrical?

will for Tino and hope he will get well again. I question this shelter and
it's care of animals. Had I made the decision I would have waited for any
surgery but is now done so hopefully he will be better today.
When I adopted my poor little skinny cat, the shelter had me wait over 3

With him already so sick and thin, the remaining effects of the anesthesia
that linger will make him sleep a lot. I don’t know if they would have
injected an local pain meds to the incision. Rest is what he needs right
now, and if he is in a little pain, he won’t feel it as he would if he was
fully awake. When I brought Dolly home from her hernia repair a month
ago…she woke up only a few times a day…a couple were when I had to give her
the meds…but she actually didn’t appear to be suffering and sleeping helps
 to heal faster.
Tino has
many prayers going up for him – and so do you…at least from me!

This neuter appears to have taken his last bit of reserves and it is scarey.
I am letting him sleep hoping he is a little perkier tomorrow. I will wake
him later for some more water and see if he wants to eat. It will be a long
night..Just need to get him until tomorrow morning vet's appt..

Good and bad! He looks so sad in that last picture. Actually, he is a very
lucky boy. He has a mommy and a daddy that love him so much that they took him
into their hearts and homes when he REALLY needed it. Part of our immune
systems come from our mental state. He was on his own, and probably had to
fight to get whatever he could to eat. With whatever the vet gives and all of
your love, I feel that he will beat this.

Can’t wait for the pictures next week to compare to the ones from today.

Ok all. Back from the vets. Don't know all but know some. Think he is 1-2
years old..but hard to tell exactly and weighs just under 3 lbs.. Does not
have kennel cough..heart and lungs sound good..but obviously immune system
compromised. Could have been from birth or from lack of care. Has yeast skin
infection and demodectic mange. This type of mange is heriditary and common in
some breeds like Chihuahuas if their immune system is compromised. It is very
entrenched and he has had it for a long time. Treatment will be problematic as
he is so emasciated etc. and it is in essence a poison, which requires muliple
applications and can cause vomiting and diarrhea and lethargy. If his immune
system does not come back, we will not be able to get rid of it. He did not do
blood work today..he wants to see how he eats and drinks etc and see his
progress next week. I did get a shampoo to get his bacterial levels down and an
antibiotic. He did eat a big breakfast and drank some water, yeah, and is
sleeping again which I expect him to be doing a lot of. So we will see how the
week goes, see how the blood work goes, and then decide our course of action.
He was so sweet at the vets..wagging his tail and giving the vet tech
kisses..what an angel.

Tino's could be a type of mange but I don't see any hair loss.  Just a lot of
crusty, dark areas even around his muzzle. We will see tomorrow.  He is
quarantined on the other side of the house so hopefully all protected.

That's the same thing that happened to Gigi after her spay. She refused to
drink anything. I had to syringe her too, and soak her dry kibble with warm
water to make it soft so she would eat it all and still get enough water
from it. Gigi refused to drink anything, even chicken broth, for three
months!! I gave her Pedialyte twice a day too, yet she ate and always wanted
more. Then one day I finally caught her drinking on her own. I really don't
want to put a damper on you anymore then what you have now, but after she
started to drink on her own, three months later, is when the weird behavior
started and that's when I found out she having Complex partial Seizures. I
couldn't believe how much her stomach had sunken in after the surgery, I
think that they may remove all the fluid from the bladder just before
surgery so that they don't gag on it during and after surgery.
That may not be the case with Tino, as a lot of dogs don't want to drink
right after anesthesia for some reason, yet they will eat, and drinking
usually starts the next day.

With him already so sick and thin, the remaining effects of the anesthesia that
linger will make him sleep a lot. I don’t know if they would have injected an
local pain meds to the incision. Rest is what he needs right now, and if he is
in a little pain, he won’t feel it as he would if he was fully awake. When I
brought Dolly home from her hernia repair a month ago…she woke up only a few
times a day…a couple were when I had to give her the meds…but she actually
didn’t appear to be suffering and sleeping helps to heal faster.

Tomorrow your vet will be able to give you an honest assessment; I find it very
sad that a shelter would be so uncaring about an animal…what are they
sheltering them from??? Sheltering has to include food and water and a little
human interaction. From what you have written about this shelter, it makes me
wonder why they are a shelter at all.

I wish you and all your little ones a very good night’s sleep. Tino has many
prayers going up for him – and so do you…at least from me!

I do not have TIA's. I have been in hospital most of today again and my
neurologist says I have anxiety atypical migraines and do not have to go to
hospital anymore. I go to my family doc on Monday morning and the neuro doc in
4 weeks. I go next week to have the 2 loop recorder on heart just to see if it
is ever doing anything it should not. That will stay on for 30 days.

I am so happy.

Oh what a shame ! But it sounds like he wasn't in a good place anyway. So happy
you agreed to take him back.
When ever I ever bred and re homed the babies, I always said For what ever
reason if you can no longer care for this puppy at anytime, I will take it
back ! I only had one come back. Same type of situation, the couple broke up,
but the puppy was an adult and in good condition. I found him a forever home
with a family member and he lived out his days happy.

Cindy, have you had her to a Vet yet? The Vet will be able to determine
whether the pups are too big for her to deliver on her own. If so, then a C
is recommended. Only the Vet examine can tell you for sure. He may even have
to take an exray and see of all the pups are positioned right and will be
able to count how many. Is this your breeder, or a rescue?

I never heard of $8. Cleaning nor anything cheap with my vet and I have been
going to this vet for about 35 yearsthe original owner is retired. But I
really like and trust the one I use there now and used her about 15 years, and
she is so kind and gentle with animals. My current loves are 9 mo. Old and they
eat good kibble and I use finger brush. One of my fur boys several years ago(
now passed) had to have to be put to sleep and 12 teeth pulled. His mouth was
so small and so many foods he could not eat and rawhide almost killed him...I
am very careful with Pedro and Chico.love them so much.

Those so called treats that clean the dog's teeth do not work. I feed my 8yo
chi (Coffee) soft food and milk bones, so his tartar buildup isn't hard. I
remove it every other week with my finger and have not had any problems. I
use to take him to the vet but I didn't like the fact that he had to be put
under. I also save the $8.00 that the vet charges.

RE: [Chihuahuas] (unknown)

2011-05-06 Thread Joan Croft
My two eat hard kibble which also has an ingredient to break down the
tartar. I have heard a few sad stories lately about dogs who have lost all
of their teeth, and also dogs that have lost their lives because of gum
disease.

My vet does check Dolly Desi's teeth and gums every single time that they
are there.whether it be the $10 visit for a vaccine, or a $40 visit for a
respiratory infection.

That all being said, my dogs are young - one that will be 3 on the 20th, and
the other will be 2 in August. I am priming them for when and if I need to
brush their teeth because they do start to get tartar or they get gum
disease. The Petzlife gel actually softens any tartar buildup, and they
don't have any. They love the flavor and the next step is to use the
fingertip toothbrush and massage their gums and teeth that way, and then
slowly do a little toothpaste with it and then pure toothpaste. If I wait
until they are 5 or 6 when nature starts taking its course, they will still
not like a toothbrush all of a sudden.

But, I don't know where you live, but I have never heard of a vet charging
only $8 to clean teeth.

Have you introduced them to your dog that you already have - I would pick the
one that gets along with the baby you already have.

He looks like full Chihuahua to me.

Just a word of caution (because I have been there) just because a breeder or
someone told you that he will be 7 lbs does not mean that he will. My Desi Lou
weighed 6 lbs at 4 months (and the vet had me put him on adult food then
because he had too much fat) and now he weighs a little over 9 lbs. His
parents were 4 ½ and 5 ½ lbs. Desi is very lean. He is taller and longer than
Dolly.

Your puppy looks like he has some extra fat on him. Please ask your vet if he
thinks that the puppy has extra fat…losing it as a puppy is much easier than
when he will be older.

I don’t think that one sex is smarter than another…it just depends on each dog.
I have two…a female and a male. They are smarter in different ways. Desi can
problem-solve to get his treats when hidden, where Dolly seems to be smarter in
other ways.

She is really darling and looks a lot like a chi to me - I think she may weigh
more than 7 lbs when grown but maybe not. Look up on the chihuahua weight chart
you can google it and you can find it in ounces and pounds. My girl was born on
Aug 30 and weighs 2.6. now and she is 4.5 months and will probably be 4-5 lbs
when grown. But your little girl will be a small and a very pretty! My baby is

It would help to ID her if we could see her ears. From what I can see my guess
is that she is not a Chi.

Are they littermates?

I have one of each. I love them both. In my case, potty training Desi (male)
was very difficult. Dolly has the perfect little girl personality…and Desi is
the rough and tumble little boy. Now that doesn’t mean that all are like that.
There are cuter clothes for girls (I do dress mine every day – in the winter
because they are cold; and in the summer to prevent them from getting skin
cancer.)

I would say that you need to spend some time with them and experience their
personalities…they are old enough to have some personality already formed. You
will feel that one is the right one for you…and also you may find that neither
seem right for you.

Good luck…I am very excited for you!
