Poor Gigi had a hard time of when she surprised me and went into heat during the first week that I got her, and then after the spay surgery, she started to have seizures on and off for almost a year, until I finally figured out why, thanks to everyone's input in this group and a lot of research, because 4 different vets didn't know why. Your Gigi is lucky to have you also. I know what it means to spend time on the computer doing research for a sick animal to try and find the correct diagnosis. I had a spider Monkey for twelve years and the last two years of her life I was doing the very same thing. At first she was diagnosed as Cushings Didease. But in the end she was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor(specifically a prolactinoma.). It was a terrible two years . She passed in 2002 and it is still a difficult subject for meto talk about.A part of me died with Becky that day!I emailed primate vets all over the world and got many responses and suggestions. One vet diagnosed her correctly, from another country. Luckily I had a vet who listened to me and paid attention to the information I gatheredMary Overton From: "twope...@aol.com" twope...@aol.com To: Chihuahuas@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2012 10:18 AM Subject: Re: [Chihuahuas] (unknown) Yes, I agree, sometimes things are meant to be. Re: [Chihuahuas] (unknown)
Hello Mary, Thank you for your introduction. It is good to hear that you love all 5 of your Chi’s so very much. They are so fantastic and loving. I’m very sorry to hear that some of your Chi’s had a bad life of abuse before they came to you. It’s horrible that people abuse animals. And how can you abuse a tiny Chi??? What are this for a people? They are monsters. At least they live with you now and are loved very much. You write that you are disabled. In wich way? Can’t you walk? Can you cope on your own with your 5 Chihuahua’s in your home? Do you have a photomap of your Chihuahua’s at “Chihuahuas”? I do, have a photomap at “Chihuahuas” named: (A) Rita Wien. Vicky daughter Liaa” with 7 photo’s in it. I hope to add more soon. I invite you to take a look at my photomap. The direct link is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Chihuahuas/photos/album/1242418330/pic/list I am a devoted parrot-fan. But I’ve always been an animal-person. I like all kinds of pets. I do have several parrots, conures and cockatiels and I do have 3 cats and my two Chihuahua’s. Re: [Chihuahuas] (unknown)
I have been on disability since 2006. I have Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) I eas on dialysis for four years. In June they told me I would die if I did not get a kidney in the next ninety days Then the end of August the 29 2008 I got a kidney transplant. 2011 I had my gallbladder out then nine monyhs later they took out both my native Kidneys(the ones I was born with) The cysts in the kidneys kept getting larger to the point where it was interfering with my other organs, breathing etc... I am also diabetic and have sleep apnea, I am also being treated for Depression and anxiety. The dogs are my reason for being. I actually can walk and get around better since they removed my kidneys. One weighed 4 pounds and the other weighed 3 pounds. my nephrologist said I was having twin kidneys.LOL I live alone and care for myself and my dogs. There are some things I need help, mostly heavy work. Re: [Chihuahuas] (unknown)
Mary they are the most beautiful bunch of misfits I have ever seen! Lucky for all of you, that you found each other. God knew just where he wanted each one of them so they could be loved and taken care of when others would have discarded them because they aren't perfect. That's how I feel about Gigi, her BYB no longer wanted her because she couldn't produce any more without a c-section (and she has several scars to prove it too) and passed her on to a college kid that knew nothing at all about dogs, least of all a chi, and she too only had her for a month, now I have her forever. She has been seizure free for many months now and is truly a blessing in my life. Princess too came into my life when I was going through a difficult time, and she helped to pull me through it. Dogs are the best antidote for many things that ail us, they give us a reason to go on and be there for them, and I have always believed that God's hand is in it from the beginning for both the human and the dogs. ---Original Message--- From: Mary Overton Date: 9/25/2012 4:14:16 PM To: Chihuahuas@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [Chihuahuas] (unknown) [4 Attachments] [Attachment(s) from Mary Overton included below] I live in Missouri. Pam, your vet will be a big help to you and Tino. You will get an honest opinion about this Little boy and his future. We are all praying for Gods will for Tino and hope he will get well again. I question this shelter and it's care of animals. Had I made the decision I would have waited for any surgery but is now done so hopefully he will be better today. Unfortunately, all this shelter cares about is it rules and regulations. They don't do anything for them other than food and water for the first 7 days in case their owners come for them. This includes no baths, no nailcutting, no medical care,,nothing. Then when they are adopted, they will give them their shots. That is awful. A sick dog should never have to go thru a surgery that isn't necessary. Our pup with the liver probs has not been neutered yet. I want to make sure his liver is good first. My adult girls are fixed so it's not a big deal. My teeny Snookie is 1.8 pounds and the vet said she prob wouldn't make it thru the surgery. She is almost 10 months and hasn't come into season. The vet doesn't think she will. I am so sorry you are having to go thru this. The poor little guy. Good and bad! He looks so sad in that last picture. Actually, he is a very lucky boy. He has a mommy and a daddy that love him so much that they took him into their hearts and homes when he REALLY needed it. Part of our immune systems come from our mental state. He was on his own, and probably had to fight to get whatever he could to eat. With whatever the vet gives and all of your love, I feel that he will beat this. Does not have kennel cough..heart and lungs sound good..but obviously immune system compromised. Could have been from birth or from lack of care. Has yeast skin infection and demodectic mange. This type of mange is heriditary and common in some breeds like Chihuahuas if their immune system is compromised. It is very entrenched and he has had it for a long time. Treatment will be problematic as he is so emasciated etc. and it is in essence a poison, which requires muliple applications and can cause vomiting and diarrhea and lethargy. If his immune system does not come back, we will not be able to get rid of it. He did not do blood work today..he wants to see how he eats and drinks etc and see his progress next week. Then when they are adopted, they will give them their shots. As far as neutering, you can't get them out of there without agreeing to the neutering before you bring them home. That's the same thing that happened to Gigi after her spay. She refused to drink anything. I had to syringe her too, and soak her dry kibble with warm water to make it soft so she would eat it all and still get enough water from it. Gigi refused to drink anything, even chicken broth, for three months!! I gave her Pedialyte twice a day too, yet she ate and always wanted more. Then one day I finally caught her drinking on her own. I really don't want to put a damper on you anymore then what you have now, but after she started to drink on her own, three months later, is when the weird behavior started and that's when I found out she having Complex partial Seizures. I couldn't believe how much her stomach had sunken in after the surgery, I think that they may remove all the fluid from the bladder just before surgery so that they don't gag on it during and after surgery. That may not be the case with Tino, as a lot of dogs don't want to drink right after anesthesia for some reason, yet they will eat, and drinking usually starts the next day. ---Original Message--- From: Pam Dean Date: 2/15/2012 7:46:50 PM To: Chihuahuas@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [Chihuahuas] (unknown) No, not that dramatic. With him already so sick and thin, the remaining effects of the anesthesia that linger will make him sleep a lot. I don’t know if they would have injected an local pain meds to the incision. Rest is what he needs right now, and if he is in a little pain, he won’t feel it as he would if he was fully awake. When I brought Dolly home from her hernia repair a month ago…she woke up only a few times a day…a couple were when I had to give her the meds…but she actually didn’t appear to be suffering and sleeping helps to heal faster. Tomorrow your vet will be able to give you an honest assessment; I find it very sad that a shelter would be so uncaring about an animal…what are they sheltering them from??? Oh what a shame ! But it sounds like he wasn't in a good place anyway. So happy you agreed to take him back. When ever I ever bred and re homed the babies, I always said For what ever reason if you can no longer care for this puppy at anytime, I will take it back ! I only had one come back. Same type of situation, the couple broke up, but the puppy was an adult and in good condition. I found him a forever home with a family member and he lived out his days happy. Cindy, have you had her to a Vet yet? The Vet will be able to determine whether the pups are too big for her to deliver on her own. If so, then a C is recommended. Only the Vet examine can tell you for sure. He may even have to take an exray and see of all the pups are positioned right and will be able to count how many. I never heard of $8. Cleaning nor anything cheap with my vet and I have been going to this vet for about 35 yearsthe original owner is retired. But I really like and trust the one I use there now and used her about 15 years, and she is so kind and gentle with animals. My current loves are 9 mo. Old and they eat good kibble and I use finger brush. One of my fur boys several years ago( now passed) had to have to be put to sleep and 12 teeth pulled. His mouth was so small and so many foods he could not eat and rawhide almost killed him...I am very careful with Pedro and Chico.love them so much. Are they littermates? I have one of each. I love them both. In my case, potty training Desi (male) was very difficult. Dolly has the perfect little girl personality…and Desi is the rough and tumble little boy. Now that doesn’t mean that all are like that. There are cuter clothes for girls (I do dress mine every day – in the winter because they are cold; and in the summer to prevent them from getting skin cancer.) I would say that you need to spend some time with them and experience their personalities…they are old enough to have some personality already formed. You will feel that one is the right one for you…and also you may find that neither seem right for you. Good luck…I am very excited for you!
