Technically yes, but there is this human side. JFTR, I know about this
dates and announcements, cause I read devel-announce and devel lists,
but not every normal user does that.
I just read the same messages by astonished users on user lists every
time an oldoldstable release moves to archive.debian.org. Some people
are lazy. Though I don't know and doubt if such users read
debian-backports-announce, it just can't hurt to have such a notice on
this list as well.

Yes, we did not disable it and I just approved those. However you can't rely on
it. It may happen (and probably will, I added a bunch of reminders now) that
this will happen a lot sooner next time.

FYI

roundcube was updated in buster-backports on 2023/12/04 and
lemonldap-ng on 2024/01/17 and 2024/02/11

so, while desupported, new packages did enter.
(and I'm thankful to maintainers for that).

That policy is ages old and basically says once oldstable gets one
year old, backports close, so it technically doesn’t need announcing…

You are right, I fucked this up when creating the new suites and updating the
website. My bad.
Anyhow I do not plan to announce archive removals from long unsupported suites.

jftr, the website had been updated to reflect the discontinuation of
buster-backports. Just the
packages link has been forgotten.

And from my perspective https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/ has a lot of
explanations about
the support status. If you think something is unclear, please send a patch.

I fixed this now.

Or, because this will affects buster (which is currently in LTS stage)
immediately after packages are removed from main archive,
perhaps even debian-lts-announce.

I'm Cc:ing this to debian-lts if people are interested in such announce

Reading https://backports.debian.org/ , it looks confusing about what
Debian backports versions are supported. Furthermore,
https://backports.debian.org/Packages/ contains outdated links that
points to buster-backports, which further confuses people. Can I expect
the homepage and the Packages page to be updated soon? I see that

debina-backports missing packages

2024-04-15 Thread Varghese Paul
Hi All,

I am encountering an issue with the Buster-backports repository. It seems
that the repository does not have a Release file, which is preventing
package management tools from retrieving updates or installing new packages
from this source.

Problem Description:

When attempting to update the package list, I receive a 404 Not Found error
for the Buster-backports repository. Here is the error message I
encountered:

Err:5 http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-backports Release404 Not
Found [IP: 146.75.94.132 80]Reading package lists... DoneE: The
repository 'http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-backports Release'
does not have a Release file.

Steps to Reproduce:

   1. Add the buster-backports repository to the /etc/apt/sources.list:

   deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-backports main

   2. Run sudo apt update.
   3. Observe the error regarding the missing Release file.

Expected Result: The package list updates successfully, and the Release
file is found without issues.

Actual Result: The update process fails due to a missing Release file,
resulting in a 404 error.

Thank you for your assistance and for all the work you do for Debian.

Regards

Varghese Paul
