Bug#396513: kernel-2.6.18: DHCP fails with stock kernel image, works with roll-my-own kernel
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686 Version: 2.6.18-3 Severity: normal I have been rolling my own kernels on this machine (Thinkpad A21m, Debian testing) for a long time, but really don't need to anymore, so I thought I would install the stock kernel images. Alas, with the stock images (both linux-image-2.6.17-2-686 and linux-image-2.6.18-1-686) my network interfaces (both mini-PCI and PCMCIA) refuse to play with DHCP. If I run tcpdump on the DHCP server end, I can see the DHCP request coming in from my machine and the response going out. But tcpdump running locally on the A21m does not see the response from the server at all. But, if I boot back into my home-made linux-image-2.6.17-a21m.26, everything works fine. The only difference is which kernel has been booted, all other hardware and software configuration is identical. There are no interesting errors in syslog, the only visible ailment is that DHCP times out (and tcpdump indicates the response packets are disappearing into the void somehow). -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.17-a21m.26 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages linux-image-2.6.18-1-686 depends on: ii initramfs-tools [linux-initra 0.84 tools for generating an initramfs ii module-init-tools 3.2.2-3tools for managing Linux kernel mo Versions of packages linux-image-2.6.18-1-686 recommends: pn libc6-i686none (no description available) -- debconf information: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/bootloader-error-2.6.18-1-686: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/elilo-initrd-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/bootloader-test-error-2.6.18-1-686: * linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/lilo-initrd-2.6.18-1-686: false linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/old-system-map-link-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/abort-install-2.6.18-1-686: shared/kernel-image/really-run-bootloader: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/old-initrd-link-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/old-dir-initrd-link-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/overwriting-modules-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/depmod-error-initrd-2.6.18-1-686: false linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/initrd-2.6.18-1-686: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/abort-overwrite-2.6.18-1-686: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/already-running-this-2.6.18-1-686: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/depmod-error-2.6.18-1-686: false linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/prerm/removing-running-kernel-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/bootloader-initrd-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/create-kimage-link-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/lilo-has-ramdisk: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/preinst/failed-to-move-modules-2.6.18-1-686: linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/prerm/would-invalidate-boot-loader-2.6.18-1-686: true linux-image-2.6.18-1-686/postinst/kimage-is-a-directory: -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#385045: Emulating nested folders
Hi, Hint: The Maildir plugin from 2.5.0rc3 has at least some support for nested subfolders. Maildir++ as defined in http://www.inter7.com/courierimap/README.maildirquota.html never has subfolders as directories in directories: Can folders have subfolders, defined in a recursive fashion? The answer is no. If you want to have a client with a hierarchy of folders, emulate it. Pick a hierarchy separator character, say :. Then, folder foo/bar is subdirectory .foo:bar. The Maildir plugin from 2.5.0rc3 supports subfolders that way, except that it uses a . instead of : (= .foo.bar/). Bug#396459: libsdl1.2-dev: Dropping *-dev dependencies breaks package builds too close to release

While this is unquestionably a bug in the other packages, the change breaks too many packages close to release time, so in my opinion the new version of libsdl1.2-dev should not make it into etch. As this is a case of exposing RC bugs in those packages, not causing them, I'm inclined to disagree. Do you have a sense of how many packages are actually affected by this change? I would hope that in this day and age, the final count of affected packages would be relatively small. So far, out of about 50 packages I've tried rebuilding with libsdl* and sdl* rebuilt, I've found 8 failures. Assuming the proportion continues for the rest, with approximately 200 SDL-using packages that I counted, that makes about 30 new RC bugs. Some of the most common failures: * [2] SDL_syswm.h needs the X headers. I'm not sure whether this should be fixed in libsdl1.2-dev or not; if it is, that could take care of about 1/3 to 1/2 of the failures. Seems like a clear case of a bug in libsdl1.2-dev to me, that should be fixed by re-adding that particular dependency. * [4] Packages using GL without proper Build-Depends. What percentage of the build failures are caused by this? Those are still bugs in the packages using GL in this way (and the bugs should be reported and fixed), but if the number of affected packages is large enough, it may be worth having libsdl1.2-dev re-add this dep as well for the sake of expediency. We actually documented that in NEWS.Debian for exim4 4.62-7, so your debugging session would have been significantly shorter if you had actually read the docs before installing the software. Now, with your update, our existing setup broke, and it just simply didn't occur to us, that the update script could be so stupid as to REPLACE the semicolons, instead of HALTING WITH AN ERROR (or a warning), which would be a reasonable behaviour in such situations. Halting with an error if semicolons are found in an input field that is supposed to be a semicolon-separated list is kind of a non-option, don't you agree? Bug#389446: evolution: fails to import IMAPv4 configs from version 2.6
Hi, IMAPv4 has been seriously broken for a good while. Actually it has never been anything but an experimental implementation. The project team hesitated to remove it since some people depended on it. It was always desirable to have a migration script in place for the removal, but none was ever made. Since the removal is already a fact, I doubt it will ever happen. I've today upgraded from 2.6 (sid) to 2.8 (experimental), and Evolution stopped to display any of my IMAP accounts, but the accounts were listed in the preferences. It took me quite a while to puzzle how this could happen and what to do about it: simply change IMAPv4 to IMAP in the preferences solved it. It would be a pity if users upgrading from sarge would be presented with an empty evolution after the upgrade. Wouldn't it be possible to add a (presumably simple) patch to Evolution that on startup does something like (if account has type IMAPv4, set it to IMAP, done). That would solve it transparantly for the user. If this is not possible, at least a note should be made in NEWS.Debian. Thijs signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#395252: Same discussion concerning gst-ffmpeg
Hi, My opinion on this matter was requested, so I'm documenting it here. gst-ffmpeg suffers from a very similar problem, since it has an embedded fork of ffmpeg. My understanding is that upstream needs more than ffmpeg's offer in the first place, and also rewrote the build completely to be based on autotools (they told me the patch to switch to the autotools was rejected multiple times by ffmpeg's upstream). gst-ffmpeg upstream is maintaining a ffmpeg mirror, and has a complex procedure to update to newer snapshots. In particular, because of the autotools patch, each file addition or removal needs to be added to Makefile.am, and, in general, each codec additions or removal needs to be updated in the caps definitions (caps is some sort of MIME type for a codec whichin GStreamer). I did try (last week!) to build gst-ffmpeg against Debian's ffmpeg /source/, but: - the process was very fragile, I had to fix the build a dozen of times, the patches didn't apply cleanly; I couldn't find anyway to improve this, upstream already uses quilt, and the problem is more in mapping from one build system to another - some semantical changes will always be required for major uploads, such as when codecs get added or removed from ffmpeg (gst-ffmpeg uses codec #defines from ffmpeg, so if you remove codecs in ffmpeg, you need to update gst-ffmpeg) - it was necessarily based on the ffmpeg *source*, and not the libavcodec/libavformat interfaces; would we want to base gst-ffmpeg build on Debian's ffmpeg, we would need a ffmpeg-src package I currently see no way to achieve building of gst-ffmpeg in a sane and maintainable way, and it seems we are very far from that. Very very far. Nevertheless, there an upstream request to use an out of tree ffmpeg filed against gst-ffmpeg both in Debian and upstream. I don't consider the case of gst-ffmpeg to be in any way similar to mplayer's case; xine-lib would be closer. Consider xine (which uses ffmpeg via xine-lib) or vlc, they match mplayer in functionality and do build directly or indirectly against libavcodec / libavformat AFAICT. Bug#396483: d-i testing image 31Oct06 on amd64 failed on reboot
Hi Frans On (01/11/06 06:32), Frans Pop wrote: On Wednesday 01 November 2006 01:16, Clive Menzies wrote: Comments/Problems: VFS Cannot open root device hda13 or unknown-block(0,0) Please append a correct root= boot option Kernel panic - not syncing: VVVFS Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) In general that means that the initrd fails to load the drivers needed to access the hard disk, OR, if there are multiple disk controllers in the system, that device names are assigned differently during the boot than during the installation. Being a laptop, multiple disk controllers are unlikely, so I'll repeat the install and try to get you more info The messages you show here are insufficient to diagnose this. You'll need to look back to check: - is the driver needed for your disk controller being loaded - is the disk recognized - as what is it recognized - are the partitions seen Are you dropped into a debug shell when the failure occurs? If you are, check if the modules needed are loaded (cat /proc/modules), check if the disk devices are listed in /dev/. No it just hangs - needs the power button to recover I should mention that this was previously a PV in an LVM setup. I'd already removed the partition from the VG and formatted it (I thought) as ext3 but the d-i read it as type LVM; so I formatted it again as ext3 during the install. Hmm. Did you also remove the LVM metadata from it? That could have something to do with it, though I doubt it. Any messages in the scrollback on the console related to LVM? I think so; I installed grml immediately afterwards on the same partition and that rebooted without a hitch. So there is the possibility the inconsistency righted itself; a repeat attempt with d-i will reveal more. If you need to fix anything (like manually include a module in the initrd), use the installer's rescue mode. I'll try that (if I can get my head around what to do :)) Regards Clive -- www.clivemenzies.co.uk ... ...strategies for business -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#351394: All debconf stuff can probably be cleaned from the qmail package
Oh no, not him again, says Jon...:-) Actually, this contribution is less invasive and controversial than the former we had to deal with, I think. With the removal of debconf stuff, I think that #351394 can be closed as it becomes obviously useless to switch to po-debconf for templates. This means that debian/qmail.templates and debian/qmail.config can be removed from the package. Some references to debconf perl modules can also probably be removed from the maintainer scripts and, finally, the dependencies and build dependencies on debconf can be removed as well. (BTW, having Build-Depends for the qmail-src binary package sounds weird to me). Attached is a patch. Bug#396520: Proposing a debugging method for this bug
Hi Jerome First, thank you for spending time working on the crash at VT switch on AMD64: fixing this bug is really important for the g-i project. I've just cloned your original BR as bug 396520 [1] to separate from the french keyboard issue, retitled it, assigned to the directfb package and merged with one by davide. I've cc'ed d-boot this time, but feel free to drop them in future replies. I've looked at you strace log and i think the best way to proceed is to check wether the crash can be reproduced or not also on a regular Debian system, where debugging is easier due to availability of gdb etc. So, i'm now asking you to install the libdirectfb-0.9-25 package on your regular debian system: this will allow you to run DFB applications from it (you'll need to enable framebuffer support at boot time by passing video=vesa vga=788 to the kernel). Now, please compile and install Directfb examples [2] on your system and run each df_* application in turn. While an application is running, please switch to vt1 (ctrl-alt-f1) and then back to vt7 to see if you can crash your AMD64 system with a pure DirectFB (no gtk) application. In the case you should succeed in crashing the application and the console should become unresonding, you can connect from ssh and issue a chvt 7 to get back to X. cheers Attilio [1] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=396520 [2] http://www.directfb.org/downloads/Extras/DirectFB-examples-0.9.25.tar.gz -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#394684: libgphoto-2: privilege problem with PTP mode camera
Hi Marco, So maybe this is an udev bug? I highly doubt this. Keep investigating. Also, you really really want to add other parameters (e.g. a SUBSYSTEM key) or these rules will be matched against *everything* and will try to open files in sysfs for every event. libgphoto2.rules starts with this: ACTION!=add, GOTO=libgphoto2_rules_end SUBSYSTEM==usb_device, GOTO=libgphoto2_rules_real SUBSYSTEM==usb, GOTO=libgphoto2_rules_real BUS!=usb, GOTO=libgphoto2_rules_end LABEL=libgphoto2_rules_real And then come the individual rules, matching idVendor and idProduct. And occasionnaly bInterfaceClass, bInterfaceSubClass and bInterfaceProtocol. How would you reformat those ? Bug#375712: Corrected patch for acct monthly cron job
Le Thursday 05 October 2006 à 09:02:59 +0100, Nick Leverton a écrit: I believe the previous two patches are incorrect, because the fields in sort +n are numbered starting from zero, whereas sort -k n numbers the fields from 1. So sort +1 is equivalent to sort -k2. The attached patch to /etc/cron.monthly/acct allows for this difference, and prevents the monthly email about this deprecated syntax. I confirm that this patch is working correctly, I have tested it, and sort +1 must be replaced by sort -k2 to have the same functionality. Thank you Nick for pointing this. Hope this patch can be included in the next acct version. Best regards -- Loïc heaven is not a place, it's a feeling signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#396529: rezound packaging should recommend lame
Package: rezound Version: 0.12.2beta-6 Hi! I just installed rezound from testing(etch) with aptitude, and when I run it it says on stdout: 'lame' executable not found in $PATH -- mp3 support will be disabled It turns out that toolame is installed on the system (by chance) but does not provide an actual lame command. Another alternative, twolame, doesn't either. If I create a lame symlink to either one of these two, rezound fails to open any mp3 file, popping up a window saying: -- file: Love_On_The_Line.mp3 lame command line: '/home/martin/bin/lame --decode Love_On_The_Line.mp3 -' error - virtual bool ClameSoundTranslator::onLoadSound(std::string, CSound*) const -- it looks as if either there is an error in the input file -- or lame was not compiled with decoding support (get latest at http://mp3dev.org) -- or an error has occuring executing lame -- or your version of lame has started to output a different wave file header when decoding MPEG Layer-1,2,3 files to wave files. Changes will have to be made to this source to handle the new wave file output -- I guess the Debian version needs changing to use mpg123 -s if lame is not installed, and to recommend package mpg321 (since mpg123 is an alternative that may point to a cpu-optimised versions) ... or persuade the upstream maintainer to look for mpg123 if lame is unavailable. Bug#396533: krdc: krd starts always windowed
Package: krdc Version: 4:3.5.5-1 Severity: normal I have some rdp sessions that I use fullscreen (at 1280x1024). Before the upgrade to kde 3.5.5 they always started fullscreen but now start always windowed. I have to set fullscreen at each run. At first fails (the caption and window bordar remain visible) but by minimizing and restoring the rdp window I finally get a fullscreen session as before. Also, not a Debian package, just as context information, vmware player has exactly the same problem after the upgrade to kde 3.5.5. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-1-k7 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to es_AR.UTF-8) Versions of packages krdc depends on: ii kdelibs4c2a4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-2 core libraries and binaries for al ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libaudio2 1.8-2 The Network Audio System (NAS). Bug#396534: coco-doc: No Sources, incomplete copyright file
Package: coco-doc Version: 20060919-1 Severity: serious This package includes two PDF files, UserManual.pdf and DataStructures.pdf, without corresponding sources. According to pdfinfo, the sources are Microsoft Word documents; this is not nice, but it is definitely preferred to directly editing a PDF document. I'm also not sure whether the embedded fonts are free. It also does not contain any information on the copyright of the Debian packaging and, more severely, no information on the download location. I assume it is http://ssw.jku.at/Coco/.
