Does this bug really warrant being serious? As it is we risk having this
package removed from testing. Is this justified?

This is #768914 and FWIW, I personnaly do not agree with changing the
password phrase prompt to hide the text as typed.

The only idea that comes to my mind is a (low priority) debconf
question before the passphrase prompt, asking users whether they want
the passphrase to be shown as typed or not.

I am the maintainer of parallel and after I upgraded youtube-dl, I was
just going to update parallel. OTOH, If you wish to NMU it, I'm fine
with it too.

(...)

Yes, scientific computing and anything that can take advantage of
distributing loads to more machines (which is the case for some video
reencoding enthusiasts).

OK, just to reiterate and see if I got what you are trying to
communicate, you think that a sane idea would be to keep the diversion
and simply remove the declaration that the packages conflict?

I agree and am willing to accept the patches.

I can take a look and ship something quick'n'dirty, but something
better would probably miss the deadlines posed by the release team,
since I'm slightly short of time this week. The security bug should,
definitely, be fixed, of course.

When upgrading the package, I will try to stick to a "stable" upstream release.

> I don't know if the maintainer is reading this. Dear maintainer, if

I didn't take that in any way aggressive. In fact, I like it when
people discuss the programs that I maintain (even better is discussion
of programs that I write myself, but that's not the case here :) ).

> If you have different ideas about what should be done please let me
> know.

My preferred idea would still be to split parallel from moreutils as,
say, tollef-parallel, have it, then, use the alternatives solution
with GNU parallel and let life go on. The first few versions of
moreutils can be transitional in the sense that they recommend/suggest
tollef-parallel, so that users interested in that version from
moreutils can keep using it.

In summary, I hope to update the parallel package up to this weekend.
If you want to act faster, please, go ahead and NMU it.

The only thing that I ask from anybody is to put verbose messages on
the git commits.

Thanks,

This was caused by updating to 1.12.1 then. This needs changes even from
1.11 to 1.12 migration https://jqueryui.com/upgrade-guide/1.12/ I have
asked upstream help https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce/issues/25302

Please give a heads up to maintainers of reverse dependencies before
updating to a newer version next time.

When many maintainers do this breaking updates without consulting
maintainers of reverse dependencies (update of jquery to version 3 broke
diaspora), it is seriously demotivating to maintain large packages like
gitlab and diaspora. There will be many to break but not many to help
fix. It took years of work to bring these packages to their current
state and having to fix these issues at the last moment of a release is
not fun.

Bug#846888: depmod crashes after detecting a dependency cycle

2016-12-04 Thread Ben Hutchings
Control: tag -1 upstream patch

The problem seems to be that depmod_report_cycles() sees not just
the modules in the cycle but all their non-cyclic dependencies too.
When it follows the chain from a module that isn't part of the cycle,
it proceeds to print its dependency chain as if it were a cycle but
miscalculates the buffer size needed for that. (I do wonder why it
bothers to use its own buffer for this rather than relying on stdio
buffering.)

This changes the function to:
- say nothing about modules that aren't part of a cycle
- not claim to know the number of modules in cycles (since some of
  them aren't)

It seems like there should be a more elegant fix, but I don't
understand the control flow of this function well enough to improve on
this.

If you adopt gnulib, consider also creating and releasing upstream
stable snapshots, and using them as a source for the debian package.

I've attached the script and HOWTO I wrote to document the process of
creating stable snapshots.

My git repo is at:

git://erislabs.net/gnulib.git

http://erislabs.net/gitweb?p=gnulib.git

Branches are:

upstream - upstream master, unmodified
stable - stable snapshots
master - debian packaging

The upstream repo is at:

git://git.savannah.gnu.org/gnulib.git

http://git.savannah.gnu.org/gitweb/?p=gnulib.git

and the upstream mailing list is:

bug-gnu...@gnu.org

https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/bug-gnulib

any questions, ask me or maybe the upstream mailing list

cheers,

Ian.
 How to make a gnulib stable snapshot

by Ian Beckwith
Last Update: Tue Apr 24 2010
Latest Version: http://erislabs.net/projects/gnulib/STABLE-HOWTO.html

BRANCHES

   * upstream - tracks git://git.savannah.gnu.org/gnulib.git
   * stable - the stable snapshot we produce, based on upstream
   * master - the debian branch, based on stable (optional)

PROCEDURE

   * if you don't already have a repository:

 + clone the gnulib repo:
 $ git clone git://git.savannah.gnu.org/gnulib.git
 $ git branch -m master upstream

 + then either import the existing stable repo:
 $ git remote add erislabs git://erislabs.net/gnulib.git
 $ git fetch erislabs
 $ git branch stable erislabs/stable

 + or, if that isn't possible, start from scratch:
 $ git branch stable upstream

   * update upstream branch:
 $ git checkout upstream
 $ git pull

   * tag the current upstream HEAD for later use:
 $ git tag snapshot-start upstream

   * run the test suite:
 $ git checkout upstream
 $ ./gnulib-tool --create-megatestdir --with-tests  --dir=t 2>&1 | tee
create.out
 $ cd t
 $ ./do-autobuild 2>&1 | tee ../build.out
 $ cd ..

   * find failing tests with:
 $ grep -L rc=0 t/logs/*

   * report any issues to bug-gnu...@gnu.org

   * merge the current upstream version into the stable branch:
 $ git checkout stable
 $ git merge upstream

   * resolve conflicts
 $ git checkout upstream
 $ git commit -a

   * wait a week or so

   * update upstream branch:
 $ git checkout upstream
 $ git pull

   * create list of commits to review:
 $ git log --oneline --reverse --topo-order snapshot-start..upstream >
../stable.log

   * return to the stable branch
 $ git checkout stable

   * prepare NEWS.stable for new release.

 + add new header

 + add __NEXTCOMMITMARKER__ tag where you want commits to be logged

   * for each commit in ../stable.log:

 + review each commit in ../stable.log:
 $ git show commitid

 + if you want to cherry-pick that commit:
 $ stable-cherry-pick commitid
   (stable-cherry-pick source:
http://erislabs.net/ianb/projects/gnulib/stable-cherry-pick)

 + if the cherry-pick fails:

   * resolve the conflict and commit, making a note of the new commitid

   * fill in the new commitid in NEWS.stable, then commit

   * remove __NEXTCOMMIT__ marker from NEWS.stable, commit

   * test (see above). If testsuite fails, check whether bug exists
 in upstream branch, report to bug-gnu...@gnu.org.

   * remove the temporary snapshot-start tag
  $ git tag -d snapshot-start

   * tag the new release
  $ git tag stable/mmdd

   * create and upload tarball:
  $ git archive --format=tar --prefix=gnulib-mmdd-stable/
stable/mmdd | gzip -9 > ../gnulib-yymmdd-stable.tar.gz

   * push changes to stable git repository

   * mail announcement to bug-gnu...@gnu.org
#!/bin/sh
# stable-cherry-pick -- Cherry-pick commits into current branch and
# log them to NEWS.stable. See STABLE-HOWTO for more info,

Bug#846915: Fixing OpenRC halt/reboot behavior by updating initscripts

2016-12-04 Thread lumin
Hi,

I realized that my initial patch is incorrect although
it worked. By default the halt service is not added
to runlevel «off» but that original patch requires user
to add service "halt" to runlevel "off" ... my bad.

I re-patched sysvinit package, I think this patch
is way much better. And since it detects the existence
of /sbin/openrc, it should not break the original
sysv-rc functionality.

tested on freebsd-amd64.

In any case, it seems there are plenty of people who'd be willing to
relieve you of that burden and take over maintenance of global -
including dealing with any fallout from updating to an up-to-date
version.

2016-12-04 Thread Sean Whitton
Source: evil-el

Dear maintainer,

evil-el seems to be incompatible with emacs25. The test suite fails:

Ran 181 tests, 171 results as expected, 10 unexpected (2016-12-04

   FAILED  evil-test-repeat-insert
   FAILED  evil-test-repeat-insert-line

While this problem does cause an FTBFS, I'm filing a separate bug from
#829299 because that one concerns buildd tty issues rather than
emacs24/emacs25 compatibility.

This will be RC if and when emacs24 is RM'd, which we are hoping to do
soon.

Thanks!

Well, now it is probably no longer useful any longer as Sablotron

 timestamped 2016-11-28 06:24

I was installing over wifi, and encountered two problems.

First, it said it needed non-free firmware for the iwlwifi that it
couldn't find ... but I'd used the non-free jigdo above, so I thought they
probably were on the USB stick. I asked it to look and it found them.
Why didn't it find them the first time?

Second, it prompted me to enter the WPA2 passphrase, but it displays the
password as I typed it instead of masking it with dots the way that it
does for user & root passwords.

Thanks for tracking that down! I didn't realize that was something new

Guessing from the bug report and from the fact that
~/.gnupg/.gpg-v21-migrated is empty, the first command was supposed to
be an rm on that file. It didn't work. I thought it might have something
to do with my stupidly big key size, but it doesn't work for my old
(reasonably sized) key either.

I run gpg from a text-mode terminal. I would be surprised if it were a

Hi!

While working on the “reproducible builds” effort [1], we have noticed
that bulletml could not be built reproducibly.

The attached patch sets LC_ALL=C when adding members to the
libbulletml.a archive so that members are added in a deterministic
order.

Hi!

While working on the “reproducible builds” effort [1], we have noticed
that newlib could not be built reproducibly.

In particular, the order in which object files get added to archives is
not deterministic. I think the problem is that the locale affects how
the shell sorts filenames.

I've attached two patches. The first modifies Makefile.am files to use
LC_ALL=C when adding members to archives, and as such is suitable for
sending upstream. The second is the equivalent change for Makefile.in,
and us such is suitable for applying to the Debian package (since it
does not invoke automake).

Daf

Thanks for engaging with the question :)

I was a little disappointed that all OdyX had to say about it was:

  I've sent a long mail with my opinion, and Ron's answer hasn't
altered my conviction yet.

Because "lalala, I'm not listening" isn't really an answer to a simple
direct question. And definitely not something that I can wrap with
"Sorry, but a group of Debian Developers considered this all in careful
detail, and this is what we have decided", when breaking the news to
affected people.

I think you and I shared some opinions about the merits of the IETF
model for consensus on #-devel back when people were last exasperated
with Ian's antics and looking to get some new blood and new ways of
thinking into the ctte. So yes, I don't have a problem with my view
of things ending up being what's in the rough - the important part is
that the questions raised have been answered, and that there's rough
consensus those answers are sufficient to actually address the problem
in some manner.

Or more concisely:

 "Rough consensus is achieved when all issues are addressed, but not
  necessarily accommodated"

https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc7282, if people aren't already familiar
with that process.

It's probably a bit more subtle than that, though my context is certainly
going to be coloured by knowing the history of this particular package.

This is a package which required significant patching to bring it up to
what was considered acceptable practice for distro software from its very
first release with debian back in 1999. Some of the issues were just
general problems and bugs, and upstream took patches for those. And some
of them were things he just didn't care about (or understand) at all,
but he welcomed them being maintained separately as distro patches.

So I don't see it as an unusual thing for us to patch the problems that
are effecting distro users.

And I've looked at what the newer versions have added, and it's not like
there's a lot there which could really be described as earth shattering
must-haves.

And I don't think the only answer to fixing what Vincent is complaining
about, or the issues that Wookey looked into more recently is "new
upstream or bust". I'm pretty sure that we could probably fix those
relatively simply with patches to what we have now.

I even asked for enough information to be able to assess and/or do that.
But there was no interest in providing that from Vincent or Punit, and
no other user of ggtags has surfaced to put their hand up, so like most
things with insufficient information and interest, that went no further
so far.

So as a one sentence answer, "my belief" is probably more like "we can
have the best of both worlds for Stretch". If the people expending
energy arguing here, spent just a tiny portion of that on looking into
their *problem* instead of fighting over their line-of-least-work
solution.

I'm not insisting that's what we should do. But it's certainly an
option, and it dodges the bullet of having to say "Sucks to be you"
without any notice at all. And it doesn't take anything away from
the people who want "new upstream or bust" for Stretch, because it
can still be available to them in backports. Without going scorched
earth on the other users, who would have no other option but to
package their own local versions for the duration of Stretch.

Dear Maintainer,

While working on the "reproducible builds" effort [1], we have noticed
that socklog could not be built reproducibly.

Bug#847025: xserver-xorg-core: Version 1.19.0 crashes frequently

2016-12-04 Thread Robert Luberda
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.19.0-2
Severity: important

Xserver 1.19.0 constantly crashes, see the three log files attached to
this mail.

This happens mostly after I start kodi and try to use firefox at the
same time. Such a combination forces X server to crash usually after a
few minutes. Sometimes it takes a bit longer. Sometimes X does not crash,
but the kodi screen just gets black instead.

Downgrading xserver-xorg-core together with a few dependent packages fixes
the issue to me.

Regards,
robert

This sounds a lot like https://bugs.gnupg.org/gnupg/issue2811

Please try:

~/.gnupg/.gpg-v21-migrated
gpg --list-secret-keys

and then try the decryption again with gpg.

If this works for you, please report back here!

If it doesn't work for you, please report back here, and let us know the
output of:

readlink -f $(which pinentry)
grep pinentry-program ~/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf
echo getinfo flavor | pinentry

and what context you're running gpg from: within a graphical session, in
a text-mode terminal, etc.

Thanks!

Bug#847022: mimefilter: please make the build reproducible (locale)

2016-12-04 Thread Valerie R Young

Dear Maintainer,

While working on the "reproducible builds" effort [1], we have noticed
that mimefilter could not be built reproducibly.
Specifically the order of the sorted md5sums files depend on locale.

The attached patch fixes those issues.

Please consider these other patches from the reproducible builds team:
https://bugs.debian.org/777486

Thanks!

No, it didn't.

Didn't Debian at one time support simultaneous installation of libcurl built on
both NSS and OpenSSL? Can't they just provide a libcurl for both OpenSSL
versions, with appropriate naming changes?

Bug#846312: vim package fails to build with missing man files

2016-12-04 Thread David Barnett
Turns out the problem was that I was building with make 3.81, which doesn't
support the trailing "=" syntax in "define VAR =" (and for some reason
silently ignores the whole block?). Just deleting that one = sign makes
everything work for me. Would it be okay to remove that and maintain 3.81
compatibility just a little longer?

BTW, as far as the strange "debian/tmp/debian/tmp" path, my workaround has
nothing to do with the dh_install step that was failing on those paths, so
I believe the path is fishy but unrelated to this particular issue.

Hello,

I would suggest waiting for 2.0.1 which will be released over the next few
days.
Numerous bugs were found in the 2.0 release and 2.0.1 will fix them all.

See the commit history from after the 2.0 update:

I studied your answer again. Did i get it right, i have to path the
kernel 4.9-rc7 myself with this commit, or is it enough to install the
kernel from experimental?

If i have to patch it myself, I need some help. Have no experiences with

I can confirm your findings. Downgrading libjs-jquery-ui to 1.10.1+dfsg-1 and
ruby-jquery-ui-rails to 5.0.5-3 fixed the problem I reported here.

Thanks a lot for investigating this issue and finding a workaround for me so
quickly!

thanks for your response; if I manually update all libpj* to 2.5.5~dfsg-3,

I have just used "aptitude install python-pjproject", and it installed
the above packages.

Yes.

Ok, so this probably just appears when using Debian stable plus some
testing-packages.

Bug#841135: Debian/Ubuntu multiboot USB sticks (Was: Re: Bug#841135: Acknowledgement (iso-scan/filename ignored in Debian 8.6.0 => cannot put it on multiboot USB stick))

2016-12-04 Thread Alain Knaff
Hi,

I had a little bit of time, so I continued to investigate the issue.

>From what I understand now, iso-scan is not meant to use any iso
filename supplied to it via grub command line, but it rather prefers to
scan the USB stick for usable images itself, and then present the user
with a menu.

The issue that I described occurs when there is more than one
"Debian-like" ISO image present at a level 1 subdirectory (such as
/install).

In that case, it falls into case 20) of the state-machine:

20) # One or multiple ISO(s) found: ask which one we'll use
# FIXME: not l10n safe
db_subst iso-scan/ask_which_iso ISOS_LIST "$ISOS_FOUND"
db_input ${CRITICAL:-medium} iso-scan/ask_which_iso || true
;;

Note, that (by default), the input is treated with priority medium,
which means that the user is not asked, but the system just assumes the
first available choice as default => which leads to trouble if for
instance both a Debian and a Ubuntu iso are present on the same USB
stick.

If multiple images are present _deeper_ in the hierarchy (such as
/boot/iso), it falls into state 30, which uses priority=high:

30) # One or multiple ISO(s) found: ask which one we'll use
db_clear
db_subst iso-scan/ask_which_iso ISOS_LIST "$ISOS_FOUND"
db_subst iso-scan/ask_which_iso SECOND_PASS "."
if echo "$ISOS_FOUND" | grep -q ', '; then
priority=high
else
priority=medium
fi
BACKUPSTATE=10
db_input ${CRITICAL:-$priority} iso-scan/ask_which_iso || true
;;

==> the user is asked.

So, with the existing code several workarounds would be available to
solve the issue, of which none are completely satisfactory:

1. Store the ISOs in a level deep enough to fall under case 30.
Downside: a costly full-disk scan is incurred on all media, including
the built-in hard disk, which may contain an existing installation with
many, many files...

2. Pass an exact name of ISO (with all decorations) as a boot parameter:

linux (loop)/install/vmlinuz iso-scan/ask_which_iso="[sdb1] $isofile (xenial -
16.04)"

Downside: this includes the media name (sdb1), which may not always be
the same on all computers where this bootable USB stick might be used.

3. Add debconf/priority=medium . This does allow the user to chose the
ISO image in state 20, but at the price of having to manually navigate
the installation procedure (pick each step from main menu, rather than
being guided along by the wizard)

By changing the iso-scan.postinst code, several approaches would be
possible:

1. Copy-paste the priority picking code from step 30 into 20, so that
20 too asks the user to chose if more than one iso is found at that
stage.

2. The find "$dir" $opt -name "*.iso" in scan_devices_for_iso could be
replaced with the following:

db_get iso-scan/iso_pattern
isolist=$(find "$dir" $opt -iname "${RET:-*.iso}"  2>/dev/null)

That way, existing behavior is preserved if iso-scan/iso_pattern is not
set, but if it is set, it scans for a specific filename.

3. A couple of steps could be added initially, looking for a specific
full path on all connected devices, and only drop to the existing code
if either no such full path was specified on kernel command line, or if
that path could be found on no device.

4. The FIXME in analyze_cd about comparing the codename (or suite-name)
would help

Each of these changes would make it much easier to set up USB sticks
bootable into multiple distributions.

Thanks for your attention,

Alain

I assume when you update all libs to the same release it will work.

I think python bindings should depend on the libs of the same version.
I'll have a look on how to code this dependency into the package. But I
don't agree that this is a grave bug.

Dear Maintainer,

While working on the "reproducible builds" effort [1], we have noticed
that magicfilter could not be built reproducibly.

The attached patch sorts the md5sums and conffiles files. Once applied,
along with the other pending reproducible patches on magicfilter,
magicfilter can be built reproducibly in our current experimental framework.

Sincerely,
Valerie

No, it's correct where it is. It's part of the syntax to find(1)'s
-exec flag. Placing it at the end of the line would cause sort(1) to
operate on a file named ";".

It could be replaced with a «+» to invoke md5sum(1) fewer times:

«-type f -exec md5sum -- {} +»

Bug#847014: python-pjproject: undefined symbol: pjmedia_endpt_create

2016-12-04 Thread Roland Koebler
Package: python-pjproject
Version: 2.5.5~dfsg-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

python-pjproject is broken; when trying to use it, it reports an
undefined symbol and aborts:

$ python
>>> import pjsua
Traceback (most recent call last):

  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/pjsua.py", line 59, in
import _pjsua
ImportError: /usr/lib/libpjsua.so.2: undefined symbol: pjmedia_endpt_create

I guess that this is a packaging issue.

Bug#847011: openafs-modules-source: accommodate inode_change_ok rename

2016-12-04 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: openafs-modules-source
Version: 1.6.20-1
Severity: normal

Please update openafs-modules-source to accommodate newer kernels. In
particular, the 4.8.11-1 packages that hit unstable this weekend
evidently applied upstream Linux commit 31051c85b5e2, which replaced
inode_change_ok with a setattr_prepare function with a different
signature. OpenAFS already has a fix upstream: 8aeb711, which works
for me (at least in cursory testing -- the module builds and loads,
and is capable of creating files).

While you're at it, please consider applying any other changes needed
for 4.9.x support.

Thanks!

I think that would be possible, and I even brought it up in

want to push it too hard before the dispute around the whole transition

my query... as https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=844018

Hi!

While working on the "reproducible builds" effort [1], we have noticed
that amanda could not be built reproducibly.

The attached patch stops the shell value at build-time from leaking into
processed shell scripts. Once applied, amanda should be able to be
built reproducibly in our current framework.

Thanks!

This is now in experimental, and pushed to git. Note that JSmol is NOT built,
but is included in the source package for convenience in case anyone wants to
try that. (Not me, for several more months anyway.)

More details and documentation in the package. :)

This worked for me because I had the automake1.11 package installed in
the chroot where I was building.

So a build-dependency on automake1.11 is additionally required.

 Please don't NMU it - while I will need the same two, maybe three

Bug#847007: gnome-terminal: "Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.Terminal: Timeout was reached"

2016-12-04 Thread Ilario Gelmetti
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 3.22.1-1
Severity: normal

Using AwesomeWM on top of Debian testing, can't open gnome-terminal.
Issuing gnome-terminal from urxvt I get:

** (gnome-terminal:7852): WARNING **: Couldn't register with
accessibility bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include:
the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus
security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the
network connection was broken.

Error constructing proxy for
org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0: Error calling
StartServiceByName for org.gnome.Terminal: Timeout was reached

The first error line shouldn't be related.
The locale looks ok:

$ locale

LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

Doing the same as root didn't show the problem.

Checking in /var/log/syslog I can find these lines:

Surprisingly trying what suggested in a similar bug report, #819510,
managed to solve the problem until next reboot:

Sure you did, and nobody blames you (I hope my mail didn't come through
like that). I was inquiring other Debian project members, whether they
know why that fairly heated discussion died off so abruptly a week ago,

Bug#847003: ITP: connid -- framework for provisioning identities to repositories

2016-12-04 Thread Christopher Hoskin
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Christopher Hoskin

* Package name: connid
  Version : 1.4.2.0
  Upstream Author : ConnId
* URL : http://connid.tirasa.net/
* License : CDDL
  Programming Lang: Java
  Description : framework for provisioning identities to repositories

Connectors for Identity Management (ConnId) is a framework for developing
identity connectors, the technology layer that takes place in the exchange
of identity-related information (password, attributes) between identity
managers (such as Apache Syncope) and identity repositories (e.g. LDAP
directories, relational databases).

It is used in Free Identity Managers, including Apache Syncope and Evolveum
midPoint.

I plan to maintain it within the pkg-java team. I will need a sponsor.
