I doubt there's demand for it since there are so few OpenRD users
left, but if there's demadn I can document it.

Bug#812151: linux-image-4.3.0-1-amd64: USB freeze issue on AMD SBx00 chipsets is not fully resolved

2016-01-20 Thread oldtechaa
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.3.3-5
Severity: important
Tags: upstream

Dear Maintainer,

We have tried several different kernels on this Dell Optiplex 320. The USB
chipset is an AMD SB600, which was previously known by developers to have
freeze issues when multiple devices were plugged in. We are using a KWorld
UB435-Q TV tuner, a Ralink wireless adapter, and a Creative wireless keyboard
mouse combo. Logs on the matter have been limited, not displaying anything
regarding this problem.

The patch that was applied to help in multiple device situations does not seem
to have fully resolved the issue, as when using the TV Tuner, it fails to
acquire all of the video data. When the Ralink adapter is unplugged, the video
signal from the tuner gets better, but still has green artifacts throughout.
Unfortunately, we cannot unplug the keyboard mouse combination as the
motherboard has no PS/2 ports to use with a non-USB keyboard. Testing with the
keyboard/mouse removed results in no green spots in the video data, but still
freezes occasionally during recording. This could be due to the USB 1.1
controllers which appear as connected USB devices. The problem also affects the
usage of the keyboard and mouse, causing loss of some characters and jumps on
the mouse.

The reason this is marked as important is because it makes Linux unusable for
our purposes on this computer. Fortunately, we have other computers to use
instead. This computer will likely be taken down soon and replaced with one of
those, so testing and logging time may be limited.

Andrew (I think it was) suggested that the instructions for doing that could go
on Martin’s web page, which anyone who wants to use Debian on OpenRD will need
to reference anyway.

Martin, are you willing to do that?

I can (and will gladly) test any changes and help with debuging (if such is
necessary) .

Bug#812116: newly built initrd complains about missing init

2016-01-20 Thread Harald Dunkel
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.121

If I boot the initrd generated by the new tools, then it
exits at a busybox prompt, complaining that /bin/init
cannot be found. Of course its there.

Below are the diffs of lsinitramfs for old and new tools.
Moving back to the old initramfs-tools and rebuilding the
initrd fixes the problem.

Regards
Harri

The program is absolutely right; therefore, the computer must be wrong.

I think there is a reasonable chance that this is the same issue as
810472[0], which was fixed in kernel package version 4.3.3-6.

Please could you give that one a try?

If it doesn't help it would also be interesting to know if the issue
persists with the kernel from experimental (currently 4.4~rc8-1~exp1).

Ian.

Dear Maintainer,

I need to run the following command to enable USB port on Linkstation
LS-WXL/WSXL (armel/kirkwood with DTS [0] ):
  echo 37 >/sys/class/gpio/export
  echo out > /sys/class/gpio/gpio37/direction
  echo 1 > /sys/class/gpio/gpio37/value

The 3-line script runs well on Jessie rootfs + kernel listed below:
- 3.16.7-ckt4-3
- 4.2.6-3~bpo8+2
- 4.4~rc8-1~exp1
But fails from 3.16.7-ckt7-1 to 3.16.7-ckt20-1+deb8u1 (latest jessie kernel).

The error message is like this:
# echo 37 >/sys/class/gpio/export
-bash: echo: write error: Device or resource busy

I believe it's a regression between 3.16.7-ckt4-3 and 3.16.7-ckt7-1.
I see the kernel config keeps the same for above two version, so it's
only related to source code change.
I wonder whether other armel/kirkwood user meet similar issue.

Enclosed the dmesg log for kernel 3.16.7-ckt4-3 and 3.16.7-ckt7-1.
I found some suspicious part as following.

You have another package installed (maybe cryptsetup) that requires
busybox to work in the initramfs.

Try this:

    grep -r BUSYBOX /usr/share/initramfs-tools/conf-hooks.d

Bug#810726: linux-image-4.3.0-1-amd64: Kernel 4.3 breaks Hauppauge HD-PVR recording

2016-01-20 Thread David Engel
Javier and Mauro, this is in regards to Debian bug #810726, which I
filed last week. I also informed Hans about it at that time.

Using git bisect, I finally identified the attached commit as the
offending one. Sure enough, after reverting that change, my hdpvr
behaves reliably with the 4.3.3 kernel. Further testing has revealed
that I can achieve the same result with the standard, Debian kernel by
blacklisting the ir_kbd_i2c module.

It seems something in the IR initialization is causing the hdpvr to
become unreliable. This is even when the IR support is not used nor
wanted. Additionally, blacklisting the lirc_zilog module is not
sufficient to work around the problem, nor is keeping it but using the
tx_only=1 parameter.

Bug#812120: update-initramfs fails if busybox is not installed

2016-01-20 Thread Evgeny Kapun

Package: initramfs-tools-core
Version: 0.121

If I try to run update-initramfs while busybox is not installed, I get an error
message:

E: busybox is required but not installed
E: /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/busybox failed with return 1.

This happens irrespective of the BUSYBOX setting in
/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf.

You have another package installed (maybe cryptsetup) that requires
busybox to work in the initramfs.

Try this:

 grep -r BUSYBOX /usr/share/initramfs-tools/conf-hooks.d

Ben.

Yes, I have cryptsetup installed, but this problem appeared only after
upgrading initramfs-tools to version 0.121.

This affects also at least Client (which I'm using). Also if you add
new blob, there should be also one for RS485 (there is a GPIO to select
between RS232/RS485).

I can add more verbose comments to mainline kernel .dts on how to
enable serial port, and how to select between rs232/485. Andrew, do
you want me to resend the current patches, or can it be done with an
incremental patch?

However, Debian probably needs to provide its own documentation how to
modify the .dtb (probably some example how to convert the dtb to source
with dtc, then how to do the modifications, and compile the source back
to dtb).

A.

I just tested the patch applied on top of 4.3.3 (4.3.3-6 in Debian).

It still crashes at boot, but the stacktrace is different : it happens
in blk_post_runtime_resume . Maybe I'm bit by a different bug or maybe
the I need to try with 4.4.

I'll post the captured log when I have access to a wired network. I'd
be happy to provide the logs of a debugging patch.

This change is related to #783297.  cryptsetup *requires* busybox in
the initramfs.  If you don't have an encrypted root or /usr then you
can get away without it.  Assuming that's the case, I'm reassigning
this to cryptsetup as there is an existing request to separate out the
initramfs support.

Bug#811479: boot fails in "run-init -n ..."

2016-01-20 Thread Florent Rougon
Hello,

Same problem here after yesterday's upgrade. The 0.122~a.test
initramfs-tools and initramfs-tools-core packages mentioned by Ben at
 allowed my
system to boot, thank you!

(along with the Debian jessie installation DVD in rescue mode, its
option to automatically assemble RAID arrays, followed by mounting the
/, /usr and /var filesystems of my normal system at temporary mount
points, chrooting into the temporarily-mounted root before running dpkg
-i the_deb_files [maybe simply booting with the previous kernel to
install the test packages would have worked, too?..])

Regards

Bug#811479: boot fails in "run-init -n ..."

2016-01-20 Thread Tiziano Zito
Hi,

Same problem here after upgrading to 0.121. System does not boot anymore
and gets stuck at initramfs prompt after "run-init: opening console: No
such file or directory" error.

The 0.122~a.test packages made my system bootable again too. Like
Florent, I had to rescue the system by booting with a temporary live-cd,
and installing within a chroot.

Ciao,
Tiziano

Dear Maintainer,

Since upgrading initramfs-tools, the system no longer boots.

Instead the initramfs rescue shell is started:
