If this is the only option, then we must really make sure all the live-* packages in Lenny have the new list in the Maintainer field, which may have some timing issues. it would be reasonable to disable the list completely in let's say 3 or 4 month after the switch (and thus making the address bouncing by that time). do you think more time is needed? With a redirect, that sounds like a suitable time. We will have to spot whether people posted to the Alioth list and inform them though -- it will be fairly transparent to subscribers to the new list. Without a redirect, that seems like a far too painful job to keep up for months though. so, should existing subscriptions be re-subsribed automatically or not? Yes. I'm not sure what the objections were to this action before, but I presume we will be changing List-Id at the very least. But IMHO temporarily breaking filters by re-subscribing members is *far* preferable to essentially unsubscribing people, even if it is not silent. Test of Debian Live Lenny Beta1 on an Acer One
Hello! First and most importantaly, thanks for all your hard work on this very worthy project - I appreciate it! Secondly, I used the Beta1 live image on a 1G USB flash drive and successfully ran debian on my new Acer One. For me, wireless netowrking seemed to work flawlessly. In any case, the live debian system saw my network card and found wireless beacons. Because they were pay beacons and I had limited time I did not test to see if I could reach the internet. I did not have support for the Acer Crystal Camera however - testing with 'cheese' showed that no images showed up. I have joined this list in hopes of participating with the debian live project. I thought I might do some building and testing of images and write documentation. I currently work with the debian-perl team where I have been helping to maintain perl modules for a little over a year. I also maintain the 'swedish' package for debian. Thanks again! What driver does it need? According to the debian wiki[0] it needs the uvcvideo driver. It should have a driver already available inside debian. The Acer One ships with a linux distro (Linpus Lite) and the 'Integrated Acer® Crystal Eye webcam' works with that. Linpus a fedora based distro. It shouldn't be too hard to add the ucvcvideo driver should it? I will look into how that works with debian-live. Maybe an opportunity for documentation and testing? :) 0. http://wiki.debian.org/DebianAcerOne I have joined this list in hopes of participating with the debian live project. I thought I might do some building and testing of images and write documentation. I currently work with the debian-perl team where I have been helping to maintain perl modules for a little over a year. I also maintain the 'swedish' package for debian. Any help is welcome. Currently, the most 'urgent' needs are, on the technical side, to fix remaining bugs (see wiki.debian.org/DebianLive/Lenny/Todo), and on the non-technical side to write documentation (live-manual) and manpages (live-helper). Cool, sounds like I might be able to help a bit. I have already looked at the Todo will see if there is something there I can help with. Testing debian live beta, udev issue
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi. I didn't see any better place to ask, so if there is a way to report problems with reportbug or a better list, please let me know. I booted both the xfce and standard non-graphical .iso images using VirtualBox, on an up-to-date Sid system. With both, udev renamed eth0 (the built-in network adapter) as eth1, which then caused the automatic network provisioning to fail, since it is looking for eth0. I've seen this behavior with udev before, in my mother's laptop udev increments the wired ethernet port each time the machine boots. The last I saw, there was the boot message, udev renaming eth0 to eth139 with no end in sight. I'm glad to say that the images did boot nicely, and work well, other than not having network connectivity. Did you tested downloaded images or do you built them by yourself? I ask that because there was a fixed-in-git-but-not-in-unstable bug related to udev and network interfaces which happens when build and built system have different version of udev causeing the /etc/udev/rules.d/*-persistent- net.rules to be inherited from the build system. This could cause renames of eth0 at boot time. A fix for that is in git. Bug#496684: live-initramfs: panics during network boot if there is not network interface
On 26/08/2008, Michal Suchanek [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Package: live-initramfs Severity: important Hello I am not exactly sure about the cause of this problem but it seems it is because I tried http network boot and did not have any NIC supported by Linux. The symptom: During the network boot the system panics. The last message is Runnnig scripts/live-premount. I burned the image on a CD and found the box has an Attansic L2 NIC which requires a special separate kernel module. So my suspition is that the live script fails and panics (exits) without leaving any useful debug message. This hould never happen. Every time the script exits it should print the reason of the failure. Otherwise the user is left with kernel panic of unknown cause. Yes, manually adding the atl2 module solves the problem for this system. Debian Live Lenny Beta1
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Debian Live Lenny Beta1 === The Debian Live team[0] is pleased to announce the first beta of Debian Lenny's Live images. Although we missed releasing images for Etch along with the installer images, we are now prepared to release live images within the regular Lenny release process. This is the first official release of Debian Live and the whole team has been working hard during the past 2.5 years[1] to make Debian's own[2] live systems become a reality. Nevertheless, we do need your help to find more bugs and improve the live systems, so please try them out. The images are available at: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/lenny_live_beta1/ Please also have a look at the known issues listed below. Main features = 100% Debian - The build process of Debian Live basically consists of creating a Debian chroot, installing one or more kernels along with live-initramfs[3] (a set of hooks into initramfs-tools for handling booting from read-only media) and generating a bootable image from that. This process is handled by live-helper[4], a collection of shell scripts that allow us to automate and customize this process. Considerable care[5] is taken to ensure that the resulting live system is not tainted by the host system and that installed packages are not modified more than absolutely necessary. This ensures that Debian Live really *is* Debian, and not just another a Debian-based live system. Flavours - Although live-helper is a toolkit to produce your very own live systems with only a few steps, we also provide prebuilt images that are meant to be used as reference systems for end-users. Currently, this consists of the three major desktop environments (GNOME, KDE and Xfce), as well as a small 'standard' image without a graphical environment. For the desktop environments, package selection is performed by 'tasksel' with the respective desktop task, whilst the 'standard' image contains only packages of Priority: standard or greater, notwithstanding a handful of live-specific packages (console-common, eject, file, kbd, live-initramfs, locales, sudo and vim-tiny). Image types - --- Debian Live offers prebuilt images for CD/DVD discs, USB sticks (or any HD-media-like device), tarballs (for PXE netboot) as well as a bare squashfs image to boot from the web[6] directly. Live Magic - -- Live Magic[7] is an GUI frontend around the live-helper scripts, offering a subset of the features of live-helper in an easy-to-use graphical user interface. live-magic 1.0 was recently uploaded to sid and is the recommended version. It currently supports 7 languages. Live Installer - -- Live Installer[8] is a special udeb for the Debian Installer that (optionally) replaces a part of d-i in order to install the system from the live image instead of to bootstrapping it from .deb packages. This way, a live system can be easily installed to the harddisk, ensuring that the look and feel of the installation (including preseeding) works the same as the regular installer process. Unfortunately, live-installer does still have a few minor bugs left and is thus not included in our builds yet; we hope to be able to include it in the next beta. Known issues in this release * The prebuilt images for gnome-desktop and kde-desktop are a bit too big to fit on a CD. Although the automatic installation of Recommends was disabled to build the images, they are still too big. This will need further tweaking as they are supposed to fit with the next beta. * The rescue flavour, containing system rescue and forensic related packages, is missing in this beta release. * There will be a DVD image with the next beta that includes all three desktop environments so that you can choose at boot time which system you would like to start. * Due to time constraints, the prebuilt images for Beta1 are only covering i386 and amd64; with the next beta, powerpc and sparc will follow (if you wish to test these architectures earlier, please build them yourself). * The new desktop artwork is not yet included. * The syslinux menu is still the old, prompt-based one. A freshly made new syslinux vgamenu using the official lenny desktop artwork is on the way (the same as d-i media will use in Lenny). * No live-installer included yet (if you wish to test live-installer earlier, please build it yourself). * No win32-loader included yet. * Sid packages used - At the time of building the live images, both live-helper 1.0.0-1 and live-initramfs 1.139.1-1 from sid were used. Since the latter has not yet migrated to testing, it was included manually as a local package. This is undesirable, as the release is supposed to be self-contained - however, it is just a convenient workaround as both were granted freeze

Moving debian-live-devel to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi, as Debian Live will be an official Debian subproject starting with the upcoming Lenny Beta 1 release, I've requested a new list, [EMAIL PROTECTED], in order to reflect the 'new' state (in practise, that means that this list here, debian-live-devel and it's archives will move to that new list). Debian listmasters procedures[0] appears to need seconds from other people too. So, guys.. at least the people listed at [1] please write a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED], a simple 'seconded' in the body is enough. Everyone else is of course also welcome to do so, it's just that I try to get a hand at least on those people that are listed as team-members. Bug#491313: live-initramfs: support splashy
On 16/08/2008, Chris Lamb [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Michal Suchanek wrote: When splashy is installed in the root image it shows on boot and does nothing until the init from the root image is executed. Oh? Splashy currently works quite well within Debian Live. Running the image generated by: $ lh_config --bootappend-live quiet vga=791 splash --packages splashy $ lh_build .. just works for me under Lenny, including movement in the status bar before the rootfs's init is executed. You can also see splashy in action in Webconverger. For me there is a long delay between start of splashy and the time the progress bar starts to fill. I use httpfs so this cannot be attributed to the time during which the image is downloaded. If I turn off splashy just after the bar starts filling I see init running. There are some calls to usplash for setting timeout and for the remove CD prompt which would obviously fail with splashy. However, most of the lack of support should be probably blamed on initramfs-tools. Also splashy now has a bug that prevents it from displaying the boot messages, it can only display the progress bar or crash. Since the progress is not known during initramfs it is unlikely that there could be anything displayed at all except perhaps the indefinite progress which typically keeps a filled bit moving from left to right and back inside the progress bar. Bug#496684: live-initramfs: panics during network boot if there is not network interface
Package: live-initramfs Severity: important Hello I am not exactly sure about the cause of this problem but it seems it is because I tried http network boot and did not have any NIC supported by Linux. Otherwise the user is left with kernel panic of unknown cause. live-helper for Slax
debootstrap is designed to run on any Linux distribution, to facilitate installations from Red Hat, Slackware and the like. I realized that live-helper uses debootstrap for the initial stage, and does most other operations inside the chroot. This got me to thinking: could live-helper produce a working Debian GNU/Linux live CD while running on another distro? The answer is yes! I have put together debootstrap 1.0.10 and live-helper 1.0.0 modules for Slax from the original Debian packages. http://www.slax.org/modules.php?action=detailid=848 http://www.slax.org/modules.php?action=detailid=849 To comply with the Slax standard, all locales and documentation have been removed. There's not that much purpose for making a live CD from another live CD, but it might be useful for someone. Filenames are treated literally, i.e. boot/vmlinuz* excludes the file called vmlinuz*, which is usually not what you want. Wildcards can sometimes be made to work with the -e option (where the exclude files are specified on the command line) by virtue of shell wildcard expansion, i.e. the wildcards are evaluated by the shell and are not passed to Mksquashfs. The -ef option doesn't support wildcards in any shape or form because the contents of the file are not evaluated by the shell. So in the above you should either specify boot to exclude the entire boot directory, or you have to explicitly specify each file you want to exclude. Mksquashfs 3.3 significantly improves the exclude file mechanism adding wildcard support and removing the odd behaviour seen previously. To use this you have to specify the -wildcards option to Mksquashfs. Once done your config/binary_rootfs/excludes file should work as expected. The feature is enabled as a custom parameter exactly because is experimental, but as you saw help in documentation is needed too. -- ESC:wq -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. ___ debian-live-devel mailing list debian-live-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/debian-live-devel

RFC: Roadmap to Lenny, or announcing Lenny Beta 1 RSN
Hi all, as you probably all know, lenny is frozen and is soon becomming our new beloved stable release. For Debian Live, I'm propose the following roadmap: * Releasing Lenny Live Beta 1, more or less now or tomorrow, depending on when we're able to get images finished to sync. * Releasing Lenny Live Beta 2, roughly two weeks from now (2008-09-14) * Releasing Lenny Live RC1, roughly four weeks from now or as soon as there is a D-I RC1 after Live Beta 2. If there is no D-I RC1 in four weeks, let's see if we even need a Beta 3 release. In order to produce these releases, an updated version of live-helper (and live-initramfs, if needed) will be used. Versions to releases would map like this: 1.0.0-1 - Lenny Beta 1 1.0.1-1 - Lenny Beta 2 1.0.2-1 - Lenny Beta 3 or RC1 I've noted down the things which I had in mind that are left for each step on http://wiki.debian.org/DebianLive/Lenny/Todo. If I'm missing something, please directly add it there (or reply to this mail explaining it if you think it needs to be discussed first). I've draftet a release announcement ment to be sent to debian-devel-announce once the images have been synced to cdimage.debian.org, it is on the wiki at http://wiki.debian.org/DebianLive/Lenny/Beta1. Please comment on it, add things you think I've missed, correct spelling mistakes, improve my certainly limited English skills, in short: Be bold. I've added the things I felt I like to have mentioned, and I'm certainly missing some things (right, like live-magic). Note that your additions should be done fast, so that it could be send tomorrow evening, or wednesday morning at latest. notes after trying (successfully) debian-live: cdebootrap autologin
Hi, I started a couple of days ago to play with debian-live and I'm really plased with it and now I have a very satisfactory and clean system. Thanks. I met some minor problems that may be worthwhile to let you know: 1. For the live system I'm using I didn't want autologin but info in the FAQ is not correct. Suggests autologin=false instead of noautologin besides that, I really don't want it be possible login -f in /etc/inittab. Few script lines where enought for me to get rid of that after the first login, but I wandered which should be the correct way to prevent autologin completely 2. no way to use 'cdebootstrap' for. Several problems related to cdebootstrap with cdebootstrap-helper and start-stop daemon. then I read: http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/debian-live-devel/2008-January/002997.html that suggest to switch to ddebootstrap and everything was ok (apart from the fact that variant stadard was selected that is only allowed for cdebootstrap, so that a poor message (variant not supported) was issued. Only now I see debootstrap is the default, I don't know why I started with cdebootstrap. I just want to warn people that may read this message not to waste time if it starts with divert messages and so on... A question: when working with includes i'd like to just rebuild the minimum that is possible. How can I skip everythink before the include stage? Re: Introducing live-xmaker
Hello Thanks for your efforts to make configuring l-h easier. As a l-h user I do the tar -czvf for configuration archival. I think that removing the default options form the configuration is not as easy but perhaps it could be done. The default options in the configuration serve two purposes: 1) it's the only place where the options are set - to allow customization you would have to load default options and then user options 2) documentation of the possible settings and their defaults - if there was a defaults file you could just look there and copy the options you wan to change - perhaps the configuration file should mention the location of the defaults file in a comment Merging the various configuration files in a XML file as opposed to a tar archive has one great advantage - while it's not humanely possible to write a XML file it is possible to edit it or use a VCS on it if it has reasonably placed line breaks. Still XML is only a poor compromise between machine parseability and human readability. Have you considered something like an INI file? It has sections and variables, and if you want to store verbatim files you could perhaps introduce verbatim sections. Also I think that splitting the configuration into multiple files was not a good idea in the first place. Every time I want to change a variable I have to look into 2-3 files before I find it. Just concatenating the files would keep the related variables together but you could find the setting you want to change with the search function of your editor. I used the deb files from the project website http://live.debian.net/debian-snapshots/. This should be fixed in lenny live-initramfs since 1 month. Which version of live-initramfs did you used? The etch one could be broken. -- Hi Marco, sorry i just checked, i built a Lenny image from Lenny itself. lh_build version is 1.0~a48, i have just noticed there is a new build as of 20th august on Debian Live debian-snapshots, it wasnt that build i had installed as this was about 3 weeks ago now since i last tried building images. Sorry , I reread you former mail, it is just a warning since you managed to shutdown it, right?
