Yes, could be the same. I first encountered it when exiting from i3. I
then found the same thing with several other window managers, although
logging out via the menu does not cause it.

Bug#472108: Found a solution

2010-04-02 Thread Anthony Campbell
After reading NEWS.Debian.gz for xserver-xorg-video-radeon I followed
the suggestion to turn off KMS by editing
/etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf. I could then switch back and forth
between X and VT without problems.

Perhaps this information should also be included in the documentation
for xserver-xorg-video-ati?

Bug#472108: Similar but not identical here

2010-04-01 Thread Anthony Campbell
I am getting this with 2.6.32-4-686-bigmem but not with
2.6.31-1-686-bigmem. I cannot get back to X with Alt-F7. I have to do a
hard reset with the power button.

Bug#539186: nolisten switch in /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc ignored

6000 is not available. I got round it by starting X with
  'startx -- -nolisten tcp'.

For some reason this does not affect two other machines but it does
  affect this one.

I'm not sure I understand this bug report. Can you show actual error
messages, and output of 'ps aufx' when this occurs?
What X servers are you starting, how, etc. We'll need some more verbose
 info on your setup…

 Cheers,
 Julien

I need to access a server via ssh, using this line:

ssh -f -L 6000:localhost:4499 campb...@91.204.208.39 -N

I do this and then supply the password needed to connect. I then get:

bind: Address already in use
channel_setup_fwd_listener: cannot listen to port: 6000
Could not request local forwarding.

After some research on google I used this command to find which process
was using port 6000:

Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2009-10-14 07:43 BST
Interesting ports on localhost (127.0.0.1):
Not shown: 992 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
22/tcp open ssh
25/tcp open smtp
111/tcp open rpcbind
113/tcp open auth
143/tcp open imap
515/tcp open printer
993/tcp open imaps
6000/tcp open X11

I therefore realised it was X11 that was listening on this port. I found
two ways of getting round this: either do ssh before starting X, or
start X with the --nolisten switch.

The above switch is there in /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc but it does not
seem to have any effect.

Hope this is clear

Sorry, I don't understand /proc/`pidof X`/cmdline. I don't have this.

You're passing server arguments to startx (-dpi 100), so xserverrc is
not used. Use startx -- -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp if you want to force
 this.

 Cheers,

Thanks - that's what I've been doing. I didn't realise that server
arguments would bypass xserverrc.

Bug#539186: nolisten switch in /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc ignored

2009-07-29 Thread Anthony Campbell
Package: xinit
Version: 1.1.1-1
Severity: normal

/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc contains the line:

exec /usr/bin/X11/X -nolisten tcp

But connecting to a server at port 6000 in an X terminal says that port
6000 is not available. I got round it by starting X with
'startx -- -nolisten tcp'.

For some reason this does not affect two other machines but it does
affect this one.

Bug#533301: jerky display on bbc iplayer

2009-06-16 Thread Anthony Campbell
Actually, I switched to fglrx because the display is worse with radeon
or radeonhd. With those, the screen keeps on redrawing itself on full
screen, though it doesn't crash with firefox beta. But I can't exit full
screen with Esc.

Incidentally, with either radeon or radeonhd I get much slower fps with
glxgears -- only about a third of that with fglrx.

Bug#523724: Further information as requested

2009-04-15 Thread Anthony Campbell

In reply to your questions:

1. I did not change the kernel or anything else that seems relevant.

2. I don't know why direct rendering is shown as disabled in the log
file. glxinfo says it is enabled with both versions of xorg.

3. /proc/mtrr is different with the two versions. With the older
(working) version I get:

 reg00: base=0x0 (0MB), size= 1024MB, count=1: write-back
 reg01: base=0x03ff0 ( 1023MB), size=1MB, count=1: uncachable
 reg02: base=0x0d800 ( 3456MB), size= 128MB, count=1: write-combining

With the newer one I get only:
reg00: base=0x0 (0MB), size= 1024MB, count=1: write-back
reg01: base=0x03ff0 ( 1023MB), size=1MB, count=1: uncachable

4. Here is the output from dmesg. I don't know if the stuff about
missing firmware at the bottom is relevant.

Thanks very much for that tip! Installing firmware-linux gives direct
rendering AND solves the fullscreen display problem. Brilliant!

Probably this was documented somewhere but I'd never seen it.

I think this is probably an xserver-xorg problem rather than
xserver-xorg-video-radeon. In any case, the keyboard problem is solved
so only the jerky display in fullscreen remains.

Bug#523585: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: Full-screen display jerky

2009-04-11 Thread Anthony Campbell
Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeon
Version: 1:6.12.2-1
Severity: normal

Following a recent upgrade of xorg my full-screen TV display is jerky
and freezes intermittently. Googleearth is also jerky.

As well as this there are problems with the keyboard. For example,
Ctrl-Alt-Del no longer stops X.

I thought it might be because DRI is enabled by default; I have not been
able to turn it off.

Possibly it is some other function of xorg that is causing all this but
I don't know what it could be.

Bug#469205: xserver-xorg-core: I cannot exit X with ctrl-alt-backspace

2:1.4-3 is far from being the last xserver-xorg-core in unstable, it's 5
months old. You need to upgrade to at least 2:1.4.1~git20080131-1.

  I can't close down X with ctrl-alt-backspace.

What happens when you do that? Nothing? Or does X try to reset and just
fails with a black screen or frozen machine?

Is the log below the one from *after X failed to close down* ? If not,
we need the log from after the failure.

Same problem with radeonhd or ati instead of fglrx?

 Brice

To clarify: the problem occurred with the 2:1.4.1~git20080131-1 version;
I reverted to the earlier version to eliminate it.

I now find that I get the same problem with 2:1.4.1~git20080131-1 on
another computer (desktop). This is with a different card and driver
(obviously). I will submit a second bug report for this -- after the
failure.

What happens differs in the two machines, On the Thinkpad I get a blank
but not a black screen. If I then do ctrl-alt-del it reboots. On the
desktop nothing happens at all. Actually, it's even odder than that. If
I do ctrl-alt-backspace immediately, as soon as X has started, it does
close. But after lasting some apps it no longer does.

Regards,

Anthony

Bug#469205: follow-up

2008-03-04 Thread Anthony Campbell
I seem to have found a further problem with xserver-xorg-core (Version:
2:1.4.1~git20080131-1). When using xfig I get lockups and have to delete
the xterm from which it is running. Reverting to the older version of
xserver-xorg-core avoids this.

I upgraded to the latest version of xserver-xorg-core on Sid. The
previous problem with icewm is no longer there but now there is a new
 one: I can't close down X with ctrl-alt-backspace.

Bug#451989: Further news on 451989

2008-01-02 Thread Anthony Campbell
Following the recent upgrade of xserver-xorg I tried upgrading
xserver-xorg-core again. The problem with ctrl-alt-esc in Icewm has gone
away but there is a new bug. Crtl-alt-del no longer closes X though I
can do so via the popup panel in Icewm.

I have reverted to the backported version of xserver-xorg-core.

Can you look in /var/log/aptitude or /var/log/dpkg.log to find out what
 has been upgraded recently?

Also, if X really locks up, ctrl-alt-fX to switch VT should not work,
ctrl-alt-backspace to exit X should not either, the Xorg process could
be using 100% CPU (login by ssh to check this), and Xorg.0.log might
contain some errors about event being rejected.
Do you observe any of these symptoms?

 Brice

Ctrl-alt-Fx never works here on any of my machines. When the lockup
occurs no keys at all work, nor does the mouse, and I have to switch off
and reboot. I can't see anything in Xorg.log but it only has the latest
startup log for X, which is currently working. (I've disabled the
Ctrl-Esc sequence in icewm.)

Here is the relevant section of dpkg.log, showing what was done at the
last upgrade (sorry its's long):

Bug#444025: xinit: xmodmap no longer run at startup

2007-09-25 Thread Anthony Campbell
Package: xinit
Version: 1.0.5-1
Severity: important

I have had this line in .xinitrc for months or years and it has always
worked: xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap

For the last couple of weeks it has stopped working; there is no error
message but the file is not read. I can still run it manually for each
xterm but that is not really very useful.

I tried adding the same line to ~/.bashrc and this worked, but it also
had the effect of inactivating ssh and ping between computers on my
network because bash was trying to run xmodmap in a console and failing.
