[Test-Announce] Fedora 38 Upgrade Test Day 2023-03-28

2023-03-28 Thread Sumantro Mukherjee
Hey All,

As we come closer to Fedora 38 release dates, it's time to test upgrades.
Fedora 38 has a lot of changesets and it becomes essential that we
test the graphical upgrade methods as well as the command line.
As a part of this test day[0], we will test upgrading from a full
updated, F36 and F37 to the F38 for all architectures(x86_64,ARM,aarch
64) and variants(WS,cloud,server,silverblue,IoT).

The results can be submitted here[1]

As usual, we hang out on the #fedora-test-day, should you have questions.

orphaning golang-github-exoscale-egoscale

2023-03-28 Thread Carl George
I just orphaned golang-github-exoscale-egoscale. I'm no longer
interested in maintaining it. It's up for grabs for any interested
parties. Do note that currently it fails to install in F39 [0]
because one of its dependencies was retired [1], so that will need to
be sorted out to keep the package around.

Well, I don't know that I have any time to drive this,
and I am not sure if it should be on dnf5 or libdnf or librepo or all of
them?

Anyhow, filed https://github.com/rpm-software-management/dnf5/issues/408

So, this change depends on that being in service?
Might add it to the change as a dependency?

[EPEL-devel] From the Peanut Gallery: EPEL and Stream strategic de-dup? -- WAS: EPEL2RHEL

2023-03-28 Thread Bryan Smith
As a lurker of no note (feel free to ignore this rest of this post) I have
resisted commenting since the thread started last fall. And I'm sure
anything I post might come off as 'from the peanut gallery,' as it probably
should. I'm going 'off-topic,' but I feel it's related. And I don't envy
the EPEL maintainers, and their pains are something that most others will
never understand well.

But given the EPEL2RHEL aspect, I figured this was as good of a thread to
tangent from.

With the success of and major account buy-in of CentOS Stream, despite the
negative press due to the messaging problems (not unlike Fedora 20 years
ago), I'm really at the point I think Red Hat needs to step in,
strategically, and address this in a greater way, by support EPEL
maintainers more directly... possibly via Stream steering?

Not-so-differently than how Fedora Extras and Fedora Core were addressed
within 5 years... but, I'm probably over simplifying things.

Because even today, like I started a dozen years ago, as a RHEL consumer,
even for development systems**, I've pretty much continued to only use EPEL
on RHEL via 'includepkgs=' in YUM, now DNF, previously updated by Puppet,
now Ansible (and definitely after seeing Ansible itself upgraded to a newer
version in EPEL years ago). And so with every new RHEL Update, I ensure any
changes in those whitelists, including via Stream and Next, along with the
Update Betas.

Maybe I'm ignorant, and some of this is already in progress or at least
under consideration, but I think it would address a lot of things if CentOS
Stream and EPEL steering was more integrated, if not during the
Stream/RHEL9 lifecycle, but for 10. I haven't been able to get away from
whitelists (includepkgs=) completely, not even with Modular (although that
has helped immensely, like with Ansible itself too).

E.g., I for one, just have to 'shake my head' when I see all the various
CentOS Stream 'repositories,' and have to ask myself... what if that effort
by Red Hat engineers was put into assisting EPEL as well, even finally
integrating them, via Modularity?

Just an observation, from the 'peanut gallery,' and I could be quite
ignorant. That and I know nothing changes overnight, but the segmentation
with EPEL doesn't have to be like CentOS was before Stream in 2019.

- bjs

**P.S. even though I still advocate everyone get a free RHEL Developer
Entitlement, and argued for it to become free even before 2014, when I was
on the inside of Red Hat (and love the recent move to 16 entitlements), so
professionals and enthusiasts alike can run actual RHEL... I'm still loving
the fact that Stream is now public, and we have standardized on Stream for
container development.

E.g., although ultimately we do deliver for RHEL, we don't let UBI limit
our considerations, and it becomes more of a 'develop what's possible' and
then evaluate whether the deliverable can run on the UBI (possibly with
library alternatives), or if a full entitlement is required (we just need
stuff not in the UBI).

Re: Anyone interested in packaging nim-lang?

2023-03-28 Thread Ben Beasley
This is just a note that nim was packaged in Fedora at one point[1], but was
orphaned and eventually retired. There is a process[2] for reviving such a
package; it will be similar to the process for adding a new package.

I am working on replacing the current version of fedimg to move from libcloud
to boto3.
The plan is to provide the updated version for this release.

[EPEL-devel] Re: EPEL2RHEL - New Wording? - New Workflow?

2023-03-28 Thread Carl George
I'm also late to the party with this feedback, but just in case it's
not too late to include, can we include something about not updating
the package further? Beyond just "you do not need to take any
action", we should advise against making any changes at that point, as
often the RHEL package will be exactly one release higher than the
current EPEL package, and updating the EPEL package further (either
release or version) will screw up the upgrade path.

[Bug 2182319] Perl YAML parser chokes on inconsistent indentation where Python does just fine.

2023-03-28 Thread bugzilla
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2182319

So here's the problematic snippet:

  hid: [
0x05, 0x01, 0x09, 0x06, 0xa1, 0x01, 0x05, 0x07, 0x19, 0xe0, 0x29, 0xe7,
0x15, 0x00, 0x25, 0x01,
0x75, 0x01, 0x95, 0x08, 0x81, 0x02, 0x95, 0x01, 0x75, 0x08, 0x81, 0x01,
0x95, 0x05, 0x75, 0x01,
0x05, 0x08, 0x19, 0x01, 0x29, 0x05, 0x91, 0x02, 0x95, 0x01, 0x75, 0x03,
0x91, 0x01, 0x95, 0x06,
0x75, 0x08, 0x15, 0x00, 0x26, 0xff, 0x00, 0x05, 0x07, 0x19, 0x00, 0x2a,
0x97, 0x00, 0x81, 0x00,
0xc0
  ]

The closing bracket of this flow sequence is aligned with the first character
of the parent item ("hid:").

Looking here: https://www.yaml.info/learn/flowstyle.html
I see this:

=
If the line gets too long, you can wrap it:

---
perl: [5.8, 5.10, 5.12, 5.14, 5.16, 5.18, 5.20, 5.22,
  5.24, 5.26, 5.28, 5.30]

You can also put the brackets on their own lines:

---
perl: [
5.8, 5.10, 5.12, 5.14, 5.16, 5.18, 5.20, 5.22,
5.24, 5.26, 5.28, 5.30
  ]

Note that even the last closing bracket must be indented (more than the parent
block style item), so the following would be invalid:

---
perl: [
  5.8, 5.10, 5.12, 5.14, 5.16, 5.18, 5.20, 5.22,
  5.24, 5.26, 5.28, 5.30
]

You might notice that many YAML parsers accept it, though. To be compatible
with all parsers, you should indent it.
=

I also tried pasting the YAML here: https://yamlchecker.com/

It reported "deficient indentation (197:3)", again pointing to the closing
bracket.

So it would seem to me that TAML isn't being unreasonable about this, though it
could be more forgiving. Given that the upstream author suggests using YAML::XS
(see https://github.com/ingydotnet/yaml-pm), which is packaged as
perl-YAML-LibYAML by the way, I think that might be the better option for you.

The BSD-4-Clause license was called "BSD with advertising" in Fedora, not
"BSD", that's why license-fedora2spdx does not offer it.

Re: openldap: gdb: symbol lookup error: /lib64/libldap.so.2: undefined symbol: EVP_md2, version OPENSSL_3.0.0

2023-03-28 Thread Dmitry Belyavskiy
Dear Jun,

No, it's not a Fedora-specific issue. You try to provide a replacement
to a system library, and this change may affect all the binaries built
with the system area.
You shouldn't replace or shadow the system library with your own one,
otherwise you get PROBLEMS.

You have my strong support for doing the automatic conversion wherever
possible. Thank you for working on this.

Hmm, that'd mean thousands of pull requests… I think if we agree to
this, it would make sense to just push a fix directly. Each pull request
ticket is a few mails, and with 8096 expected pull requests, that is
quite a lot of churn.

Re: Strange hook in cloned package repositories

2023-03-28 Thread Michael J Gruber
Alternatively, rpkg could ship the hook in a more central location (which has
exec). This would allow you to set `core.hooksPath` for your fedpkg repos,
maybe even automatically by using something like `git config
includeif.gitdir:~/fedora/.path ~/.config/git/config.fedora` and putting the
hook path config there.

Re: openldap: gdb: symbol lookup error: /lib64/libldap.so.2: undefined symbol: EVP_md2, version OPENSSL_3.0.0

2023-03-28 Thread Jun Aruga (he / him)
Dear Dmitry,

Thanks! The workaround worked!

Is this issue Fedora specific?
Can we fix the case:
`LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/jaruga/.local/openssl-3.0.8/lib/ gdb` to work
by modifying the gdb or openldap patches?
Which is better to fix the gdb or openldap?

[Bug 2182352] perl-Devel-CallParser-0.002-30.fc39 FTBFS: t/leximport.t fails

2023-03-28 Thread bugzilla
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2182352

If this is still a problem by the time the Perl 5.38 rebuild comes along, we
could always work around it by dropping perl(Lexical::Sub) as a build
requirement - the failing test is optional and would be skipped in the absence
of Lexical::Sub.

That's great to hear!

The starting point for package maintainers is here:
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/package-maintainers/Joining_the_Package_Maintainers/

Language stacks can be complex to build and package, and can also be
quite a bit of work to maintain. So, if you don't have any packaging
experience, I'd perhaps work on a few other packages to gain a good
understanding of the packaging pipeline before taking this on.

Anyone interested in packaging nim-lang?

2023-03-28 Thread Ankur Sinha
Hi folks,

One of my packages, taskopen[1], has moved to nim in the latest release.
I'd like to update it, but I've never used nim (and don't intend to) and
so, don't want to maintain a nim-lang stack all by myself.

Any folks in the community interested in packaging and maintaining nim?
I'll very happy to help, but I'd rather not be the primary maintainer.

Upcoming Bodhi upgrade and notable change to update notes field

2023-03-28 Thread Mattia Verga via devel
Hello folks,

Bodhi will probably be upgraded to 7.1.1 before the F38 final freeze and
I want to highlight a notable change which may impact update
submissions. The change is that update notes field will now be limited
to 10k characters length.
The request came from https://github.com/fedora-infra/bodhi/issues/4982
which brought to attention that data of some updates were really huge
and may lead to DoS attacks. The 10k characters limit I chose should
have no impact for 99% of the updates. The limit is configurable in
bodhi config, personally I would have lowered that, but I preferred to
chose a high value to start with.

Most of the updates which have notes longer than 10k characters are
rawhide automatic updates which copies the RPM changelog over and over,
but there are some user created updates which would also been affected
by the new limit. I want to point out that copying the full upstream
changelogs into updates notes is not recommended.

With Bodhi 7.1.1 the webUI form will show a character counter at the
bottom of the notes input box which will help the user to check if
they're within length limits and the form will refuse to create the
update if notes exceed the limit. For CLI submitted updates, the server
will return an error and will refuse to create the update if notes
exceed the limit.

Other changes between the currently deployed Bodhi 7.0.1 and the
upcoming Bodhi 7.1.1 I encourage you to look at the upstream changelog
at https://github.com/fedora-infra/bodhi/releases

Cheers
Mattia

/usr/libexec includes internal binaries that are not intended to be

Thanks for the information.

As far as I know, there's no way to disable the checks for now, other
than to do "rm .git/hooks/pre-push".

Will do, because my $HOME is mounted with 'noexec, nodev, nosuid' flags
and on every push it throws a warning:

$ git push
hint: The '.git/hooks/pre-push' hook was ignored because it's not set as
executable.
hint: You can disable this warning with `git config advice.ignoredHook
false`.

I think a new configuration option skip_hooks should be added to the
~/.config/rpkg/fedpkg.conf file.

You must use Kerberos now:

sudo dnf install fedora-packager fedora-packager-kerberos
fkinit --user $your_fas

Yes, it is an attempt to realise the whole thing with meson, but I have no
experience with it at all.
Thanks for the info

Double check which kind of MIT the package uses, and ensure it's the right SPDX
identifier.

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/legal/update-existing-packages/#_mit

Right.

The more verbose answer: MIT in previous system was used for whole family of
licenses. Under SPDX we recognize them as

'mpich2', 'libtiff', 'SMLNJ', 'SGI-B-2.0', 'NTP', 'MIT', 'MIT-open-group', 'MIT-feh', 'MIT-enna', 'MIT-Modern-Variant',
'MIT-CMU', 'ICU', 'HPND', 'BSL-1.0', 'Adobe-Glyph'

and this list may not be even complete. You as a maintainer should check the license of your package. There is high
chance that it will be still MIT. But it is not 100%. I, personally, use SPDX License Diff plugin to see what license it
is https://github.com/spdx/spdx-license-diff

Once you update the package - and even if the package will have the same license string under SPDX - please add
changelog entry https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/legal/update-existing-packages/#_changelog_entry
