[GNC-dev] About Experimental Reports

2020-04-24 Thread Christopher Lam
Dear Users

We hope the revamped reports have been useful and welcome to the community.

With 4.0 round the corner, it is time to consider replacing the old reports
with the experimental ones.

Balance Sheet and Income Statement (Multicolumn) reports are now well
tested, and can replace the previous ones; however not all options will or
can survive the merge. This means most options will remain unchanged
- accounts selection
- target report currency (optional in new report)
- some display options

and obsolete options ignored/renamed e.g.:
- asset/liability/equity individual labels/totals
- accounting style rules
- too many subtotal options

Also the various business reports Customer/Employee/Vendor reports and
Aging reports are now upgraded, and can supplant the old reports
immediately. The newer reports do NOT need to specify an AP/AR account, and
can show related business transactions.

The question is how to handle old reports: hide (behind a seldom-used
--extras argument), rename, or remove altogether. Any preference?

Re: [GNC-dev] Porting the Tutorial & Concepts Guide to ReadTheDocs.org

2020-04-24 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I’ve used some documentation from that source for several projects (as a user,
not a documenter) and I have to say it is much more pleasant to read and
navigate than the current GnuCash setup.

There was some discussion some time ago (I think there is a bug filed) for
making documentation more accessible for editing. The current procedures are a
bit of a hurdle, at least enough to result in few people tackling needed
changes.

Thanks for this effort. Do I see correctly that I could jump in for editing via
GitHub? I haven’t played with RST yet.

Adrien

I’m an AsciiDoc fan, but like the docs I read on ReadTheDocs.org
, which uses reStructuredText.

So, got out ‘pandoc’ to convert the T Guide (English only) from DocBook to
RST, did a little scripting and here is the result:

https://gnucash-docs-rst.readthedocs.io/en/latest/index.html

I’d say it’s appearance is a bit improved over the existing online docs.. :-)

I haven’t examined every chapter in detail, but I think this is pretty good for
a first attempt at the conversion, which is 99% automated. The only thing done
by hand is the intro page, which is ch_oview.rst with some markup for the table
of contents. Speaking of which, the TOC for the Appendices isn’t done
correctly, but should be straightforward to fix. I’m not 100% sure all the
table formatting is correct.

One nice thing about using ReadTheDocs is that the book looks good on mobile.
Give it a try.

Also, ReadTheDocs automatically generates PDF and EPUB versions. Click on the
down arrow at the bottom near “v: latest” to pop up a menu to download these
formats. They look pretty decent.

Comments welcome.

Ok, so it looks like an issue with how gnucash finds its libraries from within
the build directory,
rather than from the installation directory.

Can you run gnucash itself properly from the build directory ?

[GNC-dev] Accounts tab keader Total (SUD)

2020-04-24 Thread David Cousens
I was setting up a demo _book with USD as the default currency to create some
updates to the documentation on multicurrency section in the guide and just
duplicating the original book structure used to create the screen shots in
the current documentation.

I started a new book, selected USD as the default currency and created my
required accounts with multiple currencies, while the locale for my computer
is Australia.

In the account tab I wanted to display the Total (USD), i.e. the total in
the book currency in the accounts tab, however the drop down list of the
headers selected using the down arrow at the right of the header row has
(AUD) appended to the selectable column headers. Surely when I selected USD
as the default currency in the new book dialog, this should override locale
settings?

In the preferences Accounts tab I deselcted the Default Currency for new
accounts as Locale and selected the Choose radiobutton with USD (US
Dollar), then saved the book and reopened it. No change in the above
resulted although new accounts were in USD.

Screenshot attached. The Opening Balances (USD) displays the correct totals
if prices are set in the database

Searching through the XML file I was unable to find any references to AUD so
it is clearly picking up on the locale setting however changing
/etc/default/locale to

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_US.en

or the same settings in

/etc/gnucash/environment

produced no change in behaviour after restarting GnuCash. I still get a
column in AUD.
