Re: [GNC] v5.3 split transaction auto completion not working

2023-08-08 Thread David H
Revert to 5.1 and your splits will be auto completed :-) I found it was
more work in 5.3 to have to manually re-enter the numerous splits I have in
txns than take advantage of the latest auto complete features.

As Adrien mentioned, I understand 5.3 remembers newly entered splits after
the upgrade to 5.3

Hello John,

Thanks for the diagnosis – spot on.

I disabled price update for the stock from BSE and finance quote works

logically reached to the root of the cause.

My much gratitude and profound thanks to you for your wonderful help.

Re: [GNC] Addition to basis

2023-08-08 Thread Fred Tydeman
Thank you for the instructions.

I started with my existing transaction with the Imbalance split in one
of the Income accounts.

In the Imbalance split, I changed the Imbalance account to the stock
asset account. Pressed tab twice. Got a popup of Transfer Funds.
Changed the Currency transfer Exchange Rate to 1.0 and clicked on OK.
Clicked on Enter at top of screen. That filled in the Trading account
transactions.

Moved cursor to the stock asset split and clicked on Jump at top of
screen.

Now, in the stock asset account I (mostly) followed your instructions.
Cursor in stock asset split. Type in Memo/description, tab to stock
asset account (already filled in), tab, 0.0 (for shares), tab, 0.0
(for price), tab, tab, Click on Enter at top of screen.

I and a few other folks have noted this, and my personal opinion is
'bug' but I haven't filed it yet till I can narrow it down. (maybe
someone else has though)

It *does* autofill after you enter a new transaction in 5.3. It is just
that it seems to have amnesia for all transactions (save for the
description) entered before 5.3.

Note - ALL transactions are 'split' between at least 2 accounts, though
GnuCash doesn't show them as 'split' transactions unless they involve 3
or more accounts. (really, 3 or more 'splits' which could technically
still involve only 2 accounts)

The trick to adjusting the basis of a security position in GnuCash is to
start in the security account register then when on the security split line
of the transaction fill in description Tab enter security name Tab enter
zeroTtab enter zero Tab enter the currency value (negative to reduce basis)
Tab Tab into next split line. The income or loss goes in another line with
the income account.

IIRC There is a description in chapter 9 of the Tutorial.

[GNC] v5.3 split transaction auto completion not working

Hello,
I just installed v5.3 and encounter a problem with split transactions.
In the past on split transaction entries in the past prior used entries
were auto completed, which now does not anymore happen.
I used this a lot to call up the correct account for the transaction

On normal "non splitted" transaction entries the autocomplete works as
documented.

Am I doing something wrong?
Is this feature removed?
Is it a "bug"?

Hi Fred/Derek/flywire/all,

Maybe I am just not understanding the situation as you are describing
it, but I have not ever seen a 1099DIV (the USA's IRS form for
accounting for dividend payments -
https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1099-div) that also listed
basis adjustments on it...? But I have only seen a few foreign/non-US
dividend statements...

I understood basis adjustments to be accounted for when the asset is
sold and the most common adjustments for US stocks are wash sales, but I
can't ever remember seeing those noted on a 1099DIV, they are usually
recorded on a 1099B (https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1099-b).

If the asset is not being sold/disposed of
(https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-schedule-d-form-1040 &
https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc703), would just making a note that
could carry forward to the next year be the easiest thing to do?

Maybe I am just not understanding, are there more details that you could
share with us?

Thanks,

Brad

P.S. Although I like to include all the related emails in my response,
Thunderbird (the email client I use -
https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/) is separating flywire's email, even
though it has the same subject line, from Fred & Derek's emails...?

2023-08-08 Thread flywire

> How does one record an Addition to basis for a stock?

Good question.

I only got my head around this recently (eg
https://github.com/flywire/ETF-Annual-Statement uses ASX:VAS - Vanguard
Australian Shares).

Entity,Date,Description,Account,Deposit
Super,30/06/2018,VAS,Income:Distribution:13U,-3606.42
Super,30/06/2018,VAS,Income:Distribution:13C,-22870.71
Super,30/06/2018,VAS,Income:Distribution:13Q,7069.35
...
Super,30/06/2018,VAS,Asset:Shares:CostBase,-62.21
Super,30/06/2018,VAS,Income:Distribution:Rounding,-0.01

So, I group it to the share holding each year (like investment property
depreciation). This would be problematic selling part of a holding. I see
you are trying to attach the basis change to each share held as it actually
applies.

I'll be interested to see the responses, and hopefully a mention in the
documentation.

I used Quicken for about 20 years and then changed to GnuCash... I also
only used it for checking, credit cards, and some investments.

I did not import anything; I just started afresh some years ago with
GnuCash (I figured that if I had to go back to Quicken, I could, but as the
years pass, this is less and less likely to be needed).

I have enjoyed GnuCash very much. I especially enjoy the fact that I can
run it on iMac, Windows, or Linux.

The one warning I'd give is that the reports in GnuCash are nowhere near as
ready-to-go as they were in Quicken. I struggled to get the reports to
report how and what I wanted.

But, on the other hand, people in this list are very helpful.

and try the Get Quotes button. That will dump a lot more detail, including the
JSON in each direction, into the tracefile and should help diagnose the
problem. If you'd rather not publish your stock portfolio to the world you can
send me the file directly.

If you are now using QuickBooks Pro you already know the basics of

just a thought, if you had been using Yahoo earlier, the symbol was RELIANCE.NS

maybe someone else who knows off the top of their head can advise a command
that will export your file list to a text file

To get the text file do the following:

1, Open a Command window by typing CMD in the search box on the task
bar.
2. Type in DIR C:\Users\Barry Mahon\Documents\Tax accounts and returns
> filename.txt and press enter.
3. This will create a text file in the current folder location of the
files in the folder specified in step 2.

Hope this helps,

Subject: Re: [GNC] Today's searchfor .lck

First, for attachment images, they need to be 'as attachment' and *not* inline.

That is, in your e-mail app, attach the screenshot. Do not just paste it into
the message mixed in with the text.

You may also have a setting in your e-mail app for this to toggle between
'inline' and 'attachment'. For the mailing list - you *do not* want 'inline'.
(the mailing list software will simply strip them out of the message)

Second, if you say there are hundreds of files, a screenshot isn't going to cut
it anyway. (it would take many screenshots)

I'm not well versed on Windows command line, so without me spending time
looking it up, maybe someone else who knows off the top of their head can
advise a command that will export your file list to a text file that you can
attach here. Of course, you'd want to use whatever options are available to
include the original creation date & time, as well as a last modified date &
time. (those can be shown or not shown as desired)

From that list, we should be able to reasonably guess which is your latest
file (or maybe even several candidates for it) and then you can open them and
confirm.

I suspect though, that you have a condition where there are transactions in one
file that aren't in another, and vice versa. And this may involve more than 2
files. You'll have to decipher that for yourself once you figure out the file
situation, and then we can proceed with helping you consolidate them into one
book.

Lastly, it would be good to get a handle on how this happened in the first
place, so the problem doesn't continue to compound.

But I too don't think you lost any data unless you started deleting .gnucash
files without backups. (.lck files aren't necessarily a problem)

.gcm files store some preferences for each book. It would be best not to lose
those for now, but losing them wouldn't be data lost.

Regards,
Adrien

Paras,

GnuCash and gnucash-cli use the same code for Finance::Quote integration, so
it's not that. You reported that updating your book worked until 26 July, so
something must have changed around that day. Do you remember changing anything,
like updating GnuCash or Finance::Quote, that might offer a clue?

There may be an error in your tracefile
(seehttps://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile) that explains why the prices
aren't being updated.

When trying to retrieve quotes in the GUI are you getting the message box
saying that it couldn't retrieve quotes for some stocks followed by a list of
stocks that fail?

John Ralls
