Re: [GNC] How to import MT940 and/or online banking missing in 5.5

2024-03-27 Thread john
André,

There aren't any errors there, just progress messages. It's complaining that
you don't have the setup files, but it doesn't need them for a plain file
import. It's quite possible that your bank's MT940 format doesn't match either
of the profiles. Different banks interpret MT940 spec differently resulting in
incompatibilities, hence Martin's suggestion to use CAMT 0.53 instead.

John Ralls

Re: [GNC] Finance Quotes Yahoo off the rails again?

2024-03-27 Thread James McSkimming
Hi
As i mentioned in an earlier email, this is extremely likely to be yahoo making
life difficult for web scrapers of their data. GNC will have to catch up to
what it is doing for a “permanent” solution.

It looks to be very much the same problem where various errors (402, 500 etc)
are returned by that same server. A temporary solution that MAY work if using
a VPN is to set it to appear like USA (say NY which did work for a while or
SanFran and sometime other countries around Europe and Asia). It seems to be
random. But the problem is linked to the login sessions not remaining valid
(but I’m not qualified to say exactly how).

The previous post also pointed to yahooquery which is a python webscraper
module and similar problems with yfinance (another similar module). You can
track it down in GitHub or the developer’s website.

Anyway, if I’m right this won’t go away and won’t fix itself.

Regards
James

I am no expert but I believe that it is not possible to upgrade
finance-quote under flatpak. I believe the flatpak versions get their
portability from the fact that a great deal is rolled into the package so
that it does not need to have compatible dependencies. You might search the
list archives. For example see
https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-devel/2022-October/046338.html

URLs are scraped off, so here I am on a plain text email client with more info

Re: [GNC] How to import MT940 and/or online banking missing in 5.5

2024-03-27 Thread An Ku
Hi John, all

I just ran it again with the debug enabled as per John's instructions.
Again: I have not done any kind of setup of online banking or anything like
that, I'm only going to File-Import-AQBanking-Swift on the left-Swift-MT940
on the right side and click OK. Nothing happens after that.
I also tried the same with a camt53 file (choosing the related option in
the dialog) with the same result.

I also noticed that I have a folder created on the 19. (probably that first
time I ran/installed 5.5.1) in my user folder called "aqbanking". It
contain 2 folders:

   - settings
  - This one is empty
  - settings6
  - aqbanking
 - config.conf only contains one line: "int
  lastVersion="100992000""
  - backends
 - aqebics.conf
 - aqhbci.conf
 - aqnone.conf
 - aqofxconnect.conf
 - aqpaypal.conf

Here's the debug output:

Re: [GNC] Finance Quotes Yahoo off the rails again?

2024-03-27 Thread David G. Pickett

Still no advice on how to go to Finance Quote 1.59 under flatpak and Linux?

I just checked for flatpak updates, none for GnuCash.  It's been out for
a while but is still not attached to a new flatpak version.

I follow the import process exactly as you describe it and not the Online

I'll do the debug and let you know.

Thanks and best regards.

Murugan,

Thanks for the suggestions.  I tried them both and didn't make any
progress.  Then I tried the obvious and opened the immediately preceding
.gnucash file.  This file worked fine.  All I have to do is re-enter the
entries I made, not a big project.

As for the issue at hand, my first guess is a hidden window has input
control, but your OS allows you to scroll other 'background' windows.
(I know MacOS and some Linux distributions can do this, not sure of
Windows)

How to discover if another GnuCash window/dialog has control, but is
simply overlaid by the main window, or is otherwise hidden, will
depend on your OS and setup. Another possibility, is if you are using
multi-monitor setup, the other window could be on another monitor, or
*think* it is on another monitor that isn't on/connected.

Of course, all of the above is just a guess. We need more info.

Re: [GNC] Updating gnucash

2024-03-27 Thread Adrien Monteleone

David,

I could be mistaken, but I thought that the 'All' function negated the
need to be viewing the CoA when running it, and that the non-All
function operates as you describe. (context aware)

Good tip about the task manager. Sometimes the process is so fast, you
aren't sure if it completed or is stuck. While I think there is feedback
in the status bar of GnuCash, if it is really quick, you'll never
notice. Perhaps a dismiss-able confirmation dialog would be more reassuring.

Adrien

Re: [GNC] Gnucash Frozen

2024-03-27 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Anytime you have a problem, please report the GnuCash version and
Operating System you are using.

As for the issue at hand, my first guess is a hidden window has input
control, but your OS allows you to scroll other 'background' windows. (I
know MacOS and some Linux distributions can do this, not sure of Windows)

How to discover if another GnuCash window/dialog has control, but is
simply overlaid by the main window, or is otherwise hidden, will depend
on your OS and setup. Another possibility, is if you are using
multi-monitor setup, the other window could be on another monitor, or
*think* it is on another monitor that isn't on/connected.

Of course, all of the above is just a guess. We need more info.

Adrien

The cursor moves up and down the register and that is all - no data
entry, none of the actions work, etc.

Does anyone have any idea on what I did and how to fix it?

Re: [GNC] Updating gnucash

2024-03-27 Thread Adrien Monteleone
In addition to the advice given by the other replies, it is advised to
run Actions > Check & Repair > Check & Repair All when first opening a
file after an upgrade between major releases.

These checks and repairs are supposed to run automatically, but that
doesn't always go smoothly or completely for everyone, hence the
recommendation to do so manually.

The only other concern with an upgrade would be if you had custom
reports that use deprecated code in the new version. But this is rare.
By 'custom' I mean either you, or someone for you, coded them in Scheme.
I'm not referring to merely Saved Configurations of included reports.

Re: [GNC] Updating gnucash

2024-03-27 Thread Michael or Penny Novack

I am currently running version 4.12 for two different organizations.

If I was to update to 5.12 would I just download it and install it
into the same folders or would I need to transfer the data files?

Nathan

Because this keeps coming up ... The DATA files (your books,
etc.) and the program files (the executable) are NOT the same thing. You
do not have to do anything to the data files just because you are
changing the program.

That said, ALWAYS make back ups before a major change (in addition to
your normal back up procedure). As a retired pro, in addition to making
a "build" back up of the data, I would also copy the executable, make a
copy of the directory containing the executable << rename it --- then do
the reinstall. If all goes well with the "build" you later delete the
old (renamed) directory. But if the build fails, you can back it out
quickly by deleting the new directory (created during the install) and
rename the old one back.

This is NOT specific gnucash advice. It's for any application you use.

Michael D Novack

PS --- If you had an application that did store data in the executable
STOP USING IT. Find an alternative. Data in programs would be really bad
practice for anything written in the last 60 years << before then you
did sometimes see this >>

Re: [GNC] How to import MT940 and/or online banking missing in 5.5

2024-03-27 Thread john
Please copy the list on all replies.

The error suggest that you're trying to do a direct-bank download (FinTS,
PayPal, or OFX DirectConnect) without having setup online banking. That's a bit
odd on its own because GnuCash usually won't enable those menu selections (in
Actions>Online Banking) without having run the AQBanking setup assistant in
Tools>Online banking.

You don't need any of that to import an MT940 file. Use File>Import>Import
using AQBanking and select Swift on the left and SWIFT-MT940 (unless you're an
AMRO customer, in which case use AMRO-MT940) then click OK to select a file and
proceed with the import.

The Windows equivalent of Unix's `export` is `set` in CMD, e.g. `set
AQBANKING_LOGLEVEL=debug`. After doing that run GnuCash with `"C:\Program Files
(x86)\gnucash\bin\gnucash.exe" --log aqbanking=debug`. Don't include the
backticks (`), do include the double quotes (").

John Ralls

Re: [GNC] Updating gnucash

The update process depends on your operating system. But keep in mind that
GnuCash is only up to 5.5 (soon to be 5.6).
