Re: [IMail Forum] feature request

2007-01-04 Thread Eric Shanbrom
You can use the whitelist on the SMTP service for this purpose. Also as a
clarification the sending server has to cross the invalid user threshold in one
connection. For emails with less than that number of addresses it shouldn't
make a difference as each message should be a different connection

  Subject: [IMail Forum] feature request

  Hi,

I know we can have a blacklist for ip-numbers in IMail. As far as I know this
blacklist can, sort of, be populated, by IMail when to many invalid users
errors happen during a session but..

My ISP has found a way to do user validation on the various backup
mailservers for all the domains they are backup for, they simply set up a
session to my server before the data part starts overthere and see if I want to
accept the mail based on the sender and recipient info. If I refuse because of
an invalid user then they wil refuse the mail as well. This is a nice way where
there is no need to set up anything on the mailservers for which they are
backup. If my server is down they will simply accept all mail.

So for every mail they get with a non existent user they will try my
server with that same user to see if the user exists. If I were to blacklist
all servers attemting to deliver mail to non existent users I would blacklist
them as well. I would need a whitelist overruling the blacklist. As fas as I
know that feature is not in IMail, right?

I have Imail 2006.1 I am trying to start LDAP for the first time as I
now have a need for it. It will not start, but instead give me the
following error:

The IMail LDAP Service service terminated with service-specific error 16

When I look at the services using the Iadmin LDAP is the only service
stopped and the version is listed as 2.1.22. All of my other services
are 9.10.

I have attempted to reinstall 2006.2 using the patch I downloaded and
made sure to check all the services to start automatically, but this
made no difference.

Is LDAP suppose to be at version 9.10?

A strange thing is happening with our email server
for months now and I am getting fed up with it, so I decided to get to the
bottom of it.The Imail server v8.22 (W2k server with SP4) looses its
networking in average once a day or every other day. What I mean on loosing is
that for example when I get a time out error on the email client, I do the
following on the Imail server locally:At a command prompt I type
ipconfig/all, = all settings are OK.I pinged 127.0.0.1, replies OKI
pinged the IP of the default gateway, it's timing out and if you ping any
other IP, the result is the same.I looked at the event logs, no error in
it that would give me a clue.If I reboot the server, everything is fine
for another 24 hours. Our Imail server receives mail through Postini,
and the firewall has been set up to allow smtp 25 traffic only from Postini
servers. based on the log file, our email server receves 1500 messages a day
average. So, what troubleshooting steps do you guys recommend for this
particular problem?Until I find out what is the problem, what services
related to tcp/ip networking I could restart on the server that would
  substitute rebooting the server?GezaTo Unsubscribe:

  1.2.3.4
  nara.gov

If you know the actual host name and

But your log seems to show that the

What operating system are you running? Do a
search for iwebmsg.ini and see how many you have.. Make sure the one in the
IMail directory (or the system32 directory, don't remember which) is actually
getting updated with the new port..On some OS's there will be one in the Docs
and settings\username\ that gets updated and this will not take effect for
the service.

I performed a netstat -an. It appears to be
  listening on 0.0.0.0:80 ???

Lastly - make sure that you can't connect to it form the server as
well. That would eliminate any firewall
  issues.

I am PC Anywhere'd into the server and I am getting the
same response. That was my initial thought as well. I am trying to
access Web Messaging directlyon the server itself.

   Turn off the monitoring service.
Then restart the web service again.Istopped off IMONITOR and IWEBCAL. Stopped and started
  IWEBMSG.

Still no reponse from IWEBMSG and netstat -an gives same
response. It is listening on 0.0.0.0:80 This doesn't look right,
  but I don't know.

Make sure the web service is configured to listen on a port, normally
  8383 in the web settings.

We've had it running on port 80 for years. Yes, IIS
web sites have been shut off.

However, I reconfigured from port 80 to 8383. Stop
and Start IWEBMSG. Try to access http://mail.advarion.com:8383 from
PCAnywhere on the email server... AND IT WORKED!? I tried switching back
to port 80. Stop, Start... and it doesn't work
  anymore.

I don't understand... it used to work on port 80.
Could this be the result of some MS update that makes IIS take over port 80
  even if it's shut off?

Exactly correct. Setting the max mailbox size on the domain and in the "default user settings" did not cause users created with adduser.exe to adopt this setting. Adding users via the iMail 2006.04 web admin did cause users to adopt this setting.

The adddomain string I'm using is:
adddomain -h mail.domain.ext -I VIRTUAL -x 3000 -l 2000 -t E:\iMail\Imail\mail.domain.ext -a domain.ext

The adduser string I'm using is:
adduser -h mail.domain.ext -u UserName -p "X"

Both seem to add users to the registry consistent with the data created via the web-driven process, except for the MaxSize reg key in the user's node.

Clearly adduser.exe doesn't look at this domain default key when creating users. Very frustrating.

I did use Matt's recommendation to edit the registry in bulk and reimport, but this is a very locked-down data center. Following change controls for importing registry keys is a very painful and lengthy process.

Thanks

Using the adddomain and setting the max size setting should set this at the

This may be a trivial question, but...

I created several hundred mail domains in iMail 2006.04 via the
AddDomain.exe utility. I did specify a default mailbox size.

When creating users using adduser.exe, the new users do not adopt the
default mailbox size. I then remembered the "Default User Settings"

util. I set it manually and then created another account using
adduser.exe, but it still didn't adopt the quota size.

Is there a way to specify the mailbox quota for users from the command
line utils that isn't published? I do *not* want to edit several thousand
users one by one in the registry.

I know I can go back in after creating users and use the "Global User
Change" util in Web Administration, but I didn't want to do that for
several hundred domains either.

Thanks to anyone with some insight...

Re: [IMail Forum] Tool for migration

2006-08-29 Thread Eric Shanbrom

To move the users, if you can get them into a flat
text file with the format of:

UID,PWD,"Full Name"

You can point IMail's adduser utility to the file
and it will read them in... Moving the mail is a different story. When I do
something like this I tell the users they have x amount of days (min a
week)to get their mail from the server or it will be lost in an
upgrade...

Hope this helps

Subject: [IMail Forum] SMTP 550

Dear list,

after an upgrade from 8.15 to 8.22 a virtual domain has stopped receiving
mail that are processed through the local smtp-service. Users on the
troublesome domain can receive mail sent through the webmessaging, so
local deliveries are fine, but remote senders gets an smtp bounce that
says:

 - The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
(reason: 550 unknown user [EMAIL PROTECTED])

Telneting to the server talking to the smtp verifies users on an other
domain and aliases for the troublesome domain but says 550 unknown user
for users. Users are located in two different external databases and
worked great until the update.

How does the smtp-service interact with the user database? Any ideas on
what might have happened are appreciated.

Re: [IMail Forum] OT: Multiple locations same domain...

2006-08-17 Thread Eric Shanbrom
You could set up one IMail server as the front end for the domain and peer
it to the other exchange servers. Just make sure you have the exchange smart
hosting setup correctly to allow mails destined to the same domain but on a
different exchange server to go through the IMail server

It might be easier to set up aliases on the Imail box.

Set up each Exchange box with a separate third level domain, like
nyc.domain.com. These don't have to be public in your DNS servers, but the
Exchange server in each case needs to be set to accept mail for its unique
domain.

Set up the IPs of the Excghnage boxes in the hosts file on your Imail box.

Then set up the Imail box with an alias fpr each user. [EMAIL PROTECTED]
might alias to [EMAIL PROTECTED], etc.

No need for POP connectors, and the maintenance is no more complicated
this way than the method you suggested.

I have a client who has multiple locations across North America, each
location is running an Exchange Server but using a seperate domain. They
now want to use a single domain for all mail and their thought is to set
up
a gateway server that would receive the mail and route it to the
appropriate
recipient location. I have suggested they set up a server running
something
like Imail as the gateway and create all the mailboxes on that server,
then

use a pop3 connector with the individual exchange servers to have each
location exchange server pick up the mail.

I am looking to the list to see if there are alternatives that I am
missing.

They have about 250 mailboxes right now.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I am trying to have a footnote (disclaimer) placed at the bottom of every
message that is sent out. I read a note that says the message should be
contained in a trailer.txt file placed in the IMail directory.

This was done and the services restarted but still not foot note appears
on

any of my messages sent. I am not sending any of the messages to the local
domain as he states the note will be displayed only on external domain
host.

Is there something else that is to be looked at that I might have missed?

which is really "Main.mbx", but that's another story, to the "temp" folder.
Upon going to the temp folder and moving the mail back I noticed it had

this isn't a rule creating the folder we have an instance where Imail is doing

What do your logs show? Moist likely their ISP is now
blocking port 25 and these messages are coming from their ISP, not your

Recently, a imail server crashed on a customers sites. The data partition

I know, that the file must be corrupt, but the customer wants to know,
what happened.

It looks, that i have now a kind of a c.s.i imail job ;-)

I could not find any solution to have a view into the file. Even a type
main.mbx |more does not work.

Any idea, how i can dump this file to the screen? Or maybe a solution to
break the file into smaller pieces?

In upgrading a server from NT4 to 2000, we found that the registry
backup created by REGBACK.exe is not valid. Our registry size for the
IMail key is 593 Kbytes. All attempts to restore it on the new server
failed.

The only thing that finally worked was to use REGEDIT and export the
key, then import it on the new server. The difference with REGEDIT is
that it exports to ASCII format.

I thought I had tried this before and it worked. Anyone else tested
their IMail registry backup file to see if / how they can restore it?

Getting smarter

I figured out the string below can be added to the filter file directly.
It matched what I'd added through web mail and admin.

However if I try the test screen, it fails.

In the test screen, a single entry works, xx or a single entry for yy
however if i have xx OR yy Nothing I try passes the test.

Perhaps I'm not putting the test string in correctly?

Help
We are on Imail 8.22, haveing upgreaded from 8.15 about 3 weeks ago. Some
filters seem to behaving differently and I tried doing some tests.

I've been at this too long, and I'm now going in circles.
I need to move mail to a folder if either xx or yy or in the header

can I do a single filter Header contains xx or Heaser contains yy
or do I need two filters Header contains xx
and a second filter Heaser contains yy

I've tried all the combinations I can think of and don't seem to be able
to

get a single filter to work.

Do the condtional statements and or only work if the source, header or
subject are different?

I've read the manual and am lost

Thanks in advance

John

After working with the Eric Shanbrom of the Message Support Team at
Ipswitch

on Monday (10 April, 2006) afternoon, to resolve some problems relating to
the directory permissions the installation of Imail 2006.3 on a new
server,
I am satisfied with that I have installed and configured the latest
version

of Imail, version 2006.3, to with the best possible configuration possible
to give both the maximum security under the circumstances. Thanks for
your

great support work, Eric!

INTRODUCTION:

Given the complete change in the manner in which the software is now
operating, ie: all of the programming is no .NET based and fully able to
integrate within a standard webhosting server while allowing other
websites
to run simultaneously, there were/are bound to be some issues with the
port
of the software, and I think Ipswitch will be able to pull Imail out of
this

temporary hole that seems to have grown up around all of the problems that
many of us have experienced during our transitions.

After having a chance to poke around my new installation a bit, I have
come

to the following conclusions regarding Imail version 2006.3:

ENHANCEMENTS:

1. The new Imail software appears to have significantly increased the
ability to properly scan messages for spam according to the anti-spam
settings within the software. It also appears to have repaired the
Whitelists feature that allows incoming messages from domains or addresses
that are white listed to bypass the anti-spam features according to the
selection made by the top level administrator of the system.

2. The new software alphabetizes all of the lists, white listed domains
and

all of the other types of lists when the full list is requested to the
screen. Note that even on an extremely fast, multi-processor server, this
new sort ability DOES slow down the appearance of any such list to the
screen when the full list is requested, and requires patience on the part
of

the person doing administrative updates to any such list.

3. The new software allows a list administrator to do a partial SEARCH for
an e-mail address. This is a SIGNIFICANT improvement.

4. The new software allows a search to return a result irregardless of the
status of caps within an e-mail address. ie: if an e-mail address within
a
list is FirstLast @ domain . tld and a search is done for firstname,
the
address is properly found and returned. Partial searches are allowed.
Case

is no longer sensitive. Again, this is a SIGNIFICANT improvement over the
previous version (8.22) of the list handeling portion of the software.

PROBLEMS:

1. Because of the manner in which the ADMINISTRATIVE portion of Imail
2006.3 works, it is no longer possible for a customer to maintain their
own

lists and users. IE: To have full WEBADMIN access to a domain that is
hosted on one of our servers by someone who does not have a LOCAL MACHINE
ACCOUNT with administrative access means that they will be constantly
interrupted by the LOCAL MACHINE LOGIN that persistently pops up
requesting
a LOGIN USERNAME. PASSWORD and the DOMAIN NAME for the machine on which
the

e-mail is hosted. For security purposes, we cannot grant every customer a
local login to the machine.

This means that someone who is supposed to have WEBADMIN access to be able
to either:

- Maintain users on a particular domain
- Maintain lists

cannot do so without having a LOCAL MACHINE LOGIN account that has FULL
ACCESS. Again, giving someone a LOCAL MACHINE ACCOUNT with FILL ACCESS is
a

high security risk.

2. The ability to set the WEB BASED e-mail interface to PLAIN TEXT as
DEFAULT does NOT EXIST.

3. The ability to force all incoming e-mail to be converted to PLAIN TEXT
is no longer available. This tool is being used more and more frequently
by

customers with a corporate policy that does not allow HTML BASED e-mail to
be received by users. Examples of agencies who currently enforce this
policy are the State of Illinois, the University of Illinois MANANGEMENT
E-MAIL GROUP - not the student e-mail accounts

If you are monitoring, an IMail feature that I feel
would be helpful would be a 3rd button on the Services page and each
service page: RESTART. This would be like the IIS Restart. More often
than simply stopping OR starting one or more services, we are stopping
AND starting one or more services.

Thx.

Hi, [] Oh yes, another feature
"lost" in this upgrade is the graphic display of disk
usage/available for the client. Gone. Users do not know when they
are near capacity any longer, with the exception of using the Full
Mailbox Notification. The disk usage graphic was a very useful
tool that just disappeared. Oop, that's a feature we would
realy WANT to have back. We have a lot of students that have mailboxes
near the limit. They "constanly" need to know when they are too close
to th elimit. Kevin, is it on the list already to be re-added?

Actually the kill list is for domain/email

  Hi Barbara -

Kill lists are semi-usable, but spam
comes from so many IPs that you will drive yourself nuts trying to keep up.
  Been there and done that.

We've been using Declude for a couple
of years and it is an absolute wonder. You need a multi-layered
approach, which is what Declude gives you - blacklists, content filtering, all
manner of tools for detecting spam and customizing it for your user base. For
example, for most of our users, anything from Russia is probably spam. But we
have one domain whose business is trading with Russia. Neeedless to say, the
needs of that domain are much different, and yet Declude gives us the ability
to customize the settings specifically for them.

There is a learning curve, and there is
at first quite a bit of maintenance, but it really allowsyou to fine
tune it for spectacular results. There's a very active support group
on the Declude list, everyone from multi-year experts to brand new
  users.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Understanding
Kill File

We have been being plauged by spam lately for
several of our users so I am trying to head a few things off at the
pass.

One thing that I haven't used much is the Kill
List. First what I have done is go through the spool and look at
several emails that didn't get delivered for one reason or another and 99%
of them are spam. So I took the offending IP address of where they
were coming from and did a look up here: http://www.dnsstuff.comto see if
they were listed in a spam database someewhere. If they were listed I
have added them to the Kill List.

So my questions are:

1. Is this an effective way to prevent
spam from ending up on our server?
2. If it is does anyone have a good KILL
LIST? - If so would you be willing to share? :-)
3. If there is a better way I'd like to
know it.
4. We do have Premium Spam but a lot of
our users are afraid to just delete this mail. I do but lots of users
don't want to but still want to find a way to eliminate some of this junk.

Thank you for any
  responses.

Re: [IMail Forum] Rules help

2006-03-30 Thread Eric Shanbrom

It's negative logic. Using a truth table you can see this better:

   !a !b !c
d1 1 1 = 1
a0 1 1 = 0
b1 0 1 = 0
c0 0 1 = 0

Address d is not a so the !a rule is true. It is also not b so the
!b rule is true. It is also not c so the !c rule is true giving you
all true which results in a true (1) output. Next line ithe address
does contain a therefore the !a rule is false (0) This is an AND
table and is required to get the results you are looking for. So you
need to set up the rule to look for !a AND !b AND !c. HOpe this clears
it up some

This will work except you must point your local users to the IMGate
machine as well otherwise inter-domain mail where the users are on
different machines won't work

For Imail domain users to send to recipients of peered domains on other
machines, each Imail box runs send all mail to gateway of IMGate. A
peered IMail domain doesn't have probe other peered machines to find the
recipient's account. Imail msgs to off-machine peered domains go to
gateway IMGate which then relays directly to the correct Imail machine.

This problem is growing since 8.x but we're
getting spam stuck in the spool folder. This used to be nice since we could
review the files and add any url's to the url-domain but now it's becoming a
pain. They aren't getting processed but are 100% spam and it would be better
if they got processed by imail. There was a thread a while back on this but is
  anyone else still getting this?

ok, peering is active, but only works for peered domain users sending from
Imail-A to Imail-B, which is typically (much) less that 10% of total
traffic. The vast majority of traffic is inbound via MX, and IMGate would
relay that traffic precisely to the user's mailbox server, so peering
wouldn't kick in.

Typically a peering system does it to distribute the mailbox load. IMGate
also removes tons of other work and abuse from the Imail boxes, as well as
pre-routing MX traffic so the peers don't have to probe the peers.

I love it when tech support is helpful... (see below).
Has anyone found a workaround for this situation?

You can have one domain on many machines without Imail peering using an MX
gateway like IMGate.

The Imail machines export their user lists to IMGate.

IMGate is the MX accepting mail only for known users and relaying per-user
to the user's Imail machine.

Are needs for a list server have always been modest, so it was never worth

You need some tool to send the mail. As suggested, try blat:
Blat is a Win32 command line utility that sends eMail using
SMTP or post to usenet using NNTP

or you use a Pearl or PHP-Script script...

Eric - as a domain rule or as a spam mailbox rule? I have one main mailbox
not a subfolder.

All spam goes to spam@domainname.com for both Phrase and URL

I would think it would be rule under the main mailbox. I set a rule for
this and the mail ended in a loop always returning to
spam@domianname.com.
I searched under To Field for his email address.

Thanks,

Re: [IMail Forum] Issues Using IMail 8.22 To Send Messages From Web Server

2006-03-14 Thread Eric Shanbrom
You are looking in the wrong direction. This is a message coming into IMail
not going out to somewhere else. Since it hasn't been accepted for delivery
by IMail there is nothing to re-queue and try again.. the question here is
why didn't the conversation continue after the final RCPT TO. Unfortunately,
we only see one side of the communication, that being the commands coming
in. At this time I do not know if the sending server got the final 250 OK
and didn't send the DATA command or what. The connection timed out while
IMail was waiting for a new command. A sniffer on the line can give more
info and point you to the problem.

There's no DATA command. Maybe ASPMail didn't like SMTPD's response to
the second RCPT TO and didn't give a DATA.

Does ASPMail have a log?

Would verbose logging of SMTPD help?

Nope.. If you have a setting on the domains level the 0 is not honored
you have to put a really large number in the individual users' setting.
Something like 9 which would be approx 1GB

Re: [IMail Forum] Moving Imail to a different drive

2006-03-01 Thread Eric Shanbrom
The issue here is there are all sorts of things in the registry that will
need to be changed.. If you want shutdown all the IMail services. Move the
folders and then start a registry for the old path and change it to the new
path.. You cannot export the whole registry to do this in a text editor
with a global search and replace as when you go to import it back after the
changes you will get a license violation and the machine will not re-boot
again.. .. It is easier to copy the user's mail folders to a safe place,
export the domains key and do the replace there. Then reinstall IMail to the
changed drive so all the services can be found by Windows. Import the edited
domains key and move the user's folders to the new path.

This is the easiest way but be sure you have backups as if you go wrong you
can really hose things up

Subject: [IMail Forum] Moving Imail to a different drive

I was planning on moving Imail to it's own drive. Right now it resides on
the C drive.
I checked the KB but it mentioned only how to move the users mailboxes.

Can I just move the whole C:\Imail folder to for example E:\Imail and in
Imail administrator change the location on Imail and spool to E:\Imail? I
would of course have to go through each domain and change the location of
that vhost as well.

I hope I don't have to re-install Imail to it's new location to reflect
the

correct location in the registry. We're using the Imail database.

NO, I am talking about the list server
sending a confirmation email that needs to be relied to before it will subscribe
you to the list
You can edit each subscribe message per list
in the admin interface for that list.

Brian, did you ever get an acceptable answer for this? I also was sent
the knowledgebase article on what might cause the multiple download
problem and we are in compliance.

We're running Imail 8.22 and I have a VERY light load on our mail
server. It only serves about 20 users, with the majority of the load
being serving some 25 list serves. We only process about 1000 or so
messages a day across all the domains.

Anyway, the users have checked their POP3 email polling frequency and
we've determined that nobody checks their mailbox more than every 20
minutes. Yet they still have hiccups wherein they end up downloading
duplicates of all the mail in their inbox again. They use Outlook,
Outlook Express, Eudora and whatever Mac ships on OS-X these days
respectively. It usually happens a couple of times a week, seemingly at
random.

This happened less frequently under 8.21 and seems to happen more
frequently under 8.22.

If I thought Imail 2006 would fix the problem, I would probably upgrade
as it's covered under our SA. But with the issues presented on this
list about it, I'm holding off.

Anybody at IPSwitch listening

Doug

Thanks for the feedback. Cannot say exactly which version it
started on, but was never a problem till this last year. My
admin program about box says I'm on 8.21.

In my situation, it is not the issue of setting Outlook's
automatic checking for email too often.

I will try restarting Webmail next time it happens.

Any other suggestions would be welcome. I've been hoping to
do the upgrade to 2006 with the idea that it might take care

I'll wait for a few more patch versions!

 Hi,

This has been discussed before. You might want to search
the archives. I
personally have seen this issue on Versions 8.15 and older
versions under
 two conditions:

 1. The user has their Outlook/Outlook Express set to check
email every
minute or every three minutes. Then they get a large
download with a lot
 of
files, the total of which requires longer to download than
the check email
cycle. Before they can finish downloading, OE checks for
new email. Since
the first cycle has not completed, the emails that have
been downloaded
 have
not been marked as read, which only happens when all emails
have been
 read.
After the second cycle has started, the whole thing
snowballs even deeper.
In this case, have the user set their check for new mail
cycle time to a
reasonable value. Note that I have seen this issue with
users on a 256KB
 T1
with large downloads and a check cycle of one minute.

 2. The WebMail service is hosed. Stop and restart the
WebMail service. If
the problem is not item 1 above, then stopping and starting
the WebMail
service usually fixes the problem. Don't ask me what the
WebMail service
 has
to do with POP3. I do not know, but it works. To understand
that, you
 would
 have to ask Ipswitch.

Note that I am currently running 8.22 and that I have not
seen this issue
since upgrading to 8.22. That doesn't mean that I won't see
it in the
future. On the otherhand, I did not see it all that often on 8.15.

 Mike

This problem started for us with v8.2. So far it
has only been a problem with the clients that use
Eudora. It got a little better with Eudora by
changing the number of threads but still comes around from
time to time.

We haven't seen it with any of our Outlook or Outlook Express.

I can't say that it was caused by huge emails or
disconnects since one of the people that has the
issue is me using Eudora at my home. I attach
large files regularly and only had the disconnect
on the upload not the download side. I've tried
many different things and the only one that seems
to help is keeping the inbox empty.

I tend to believe the problem is in Imail's pop, not the clients.

Re: [IMail Forum] ListServe Archive using IMAP

2006-02-24 Thread Eric Shanbrom
I am not sure of the process of MonHarc sp? but if you have an archive
mailbox already couldn't the program grab it when pointed to it as a
user? I believe to get the messages into it you subscibe it to a list
and it pulls from the mailbox. Just a SWAG here but might be worth
looking into

Todd Richards wrote:

Hey Everyone -

This is a repost of a message sent a few weeks ago. Hoping someone might
have some thoughts.

We have been exploring different applications for a searchable ListServe
archive, and I haven't found one that will meet my main need - to accept the
thousands of messages we already have in our current archive (currently
running on an Exchange server). There are some great solutions out there
that would work for a new setup, but with trying to incorporate our existing
messages is usually the show stopper. I think someone mentioned a while
back that we should just use IMAP, move the messages over to an account on
the Imail server, and then search that account as our archive.

My questions are: is this a viable solution? If so, how many messages can
an account hold without bringing down an entire system. At the present I
believe there are about 15,000 messages in the archive (from the past
several years), some with attachments. We have occasional users of the web
interface but most all of them use a mail client to get their messages.

I played around with IMAP and got a test account set up, and was able to
move messages over. However, when I log into the account via the web, I
can't pull up attachments (actually, the attachments are messed up on all of
the accounts if you view via the website). So that worries me a little bit.

The archive will probably be used several times a day, but it's not
something that is consistently hit.

We are on 8.22 (no plans to move for a while), running on a P3 866MHz with
2GB of memory and Windows 2000.

Has anyone else done anything like this? If so, are you available for hire,
either for consultation or programming?

Thanks!

Todd

to upgrade it to 9.02.. There were some authentication issues with the
initial relase of the 2006 product which were corrected in a soon after
relase. Other fixes waas done in the .02 release that you will need as
well.. Please upgrade to the current version and let me know if you are

Re: [IMail Forum] Orpahned Spool Files - Invalid State MEssage

2006-02-23 Thread Eric Shanbrom

thee messages never completed coming in hence the
"T" file. For IMail to deliver the message you need a "Q" and a "D" file. A "T"
file will eventually turn into a "Q" file when it is ready for delivery. In most
cases this is caused by an incomplete transaction on the SMTPD
side.

The network Layer comments in the log everyone is
asking about are left-over log lines from the development process and usually do
not point to any issues.. These lines should go away in the next
release

Re: [IMail Forum] outbound rules gone from 2006?

2006-02-21 Thread Eric Shanbrom

OK time to jump in here.. Not the perfect
solution but if you can rename the forward.ima. to main.fwd this will only
forward messages that come to the inbox and leave messages destined to other
submailboxes alone. So, if you have a rule that moves the messages to the "spam"
box they will get left alone while anything going to the main mailbox will get
forwarded to the address in the main.fwd.

Hope this helps

a problem we have with forwards to AOL which involved
setting an outbound rule. Since we can't give every domain
on our server an IP to do this we're kinda stuck. The
problem is that rules won't apply to forwarded email so an
outbound rule must be added. Now, we can't do an outbound
rule since they don't exist on virtuals. One of these
options needs to be corrected somehow???Tripp

hi rmilner,
of course it will take 25+ years at 70 emails a day for 365
days to really conclusively prove this but... I have not had
a false positive in 6 months and no longer check my SPAM
folder - instead opting to just move to the Deleted Items
folder. The only false positives i've heard of anecdotally
are e-letters that the first time through (after signing up)
can look like spam.
i can share that there are some folks at Ipswitch who no
longer check their spam folder - spam is marked with a [s] in
the subject, routed by rules to Spam folder or in some cases
(me and others), moved directly to the deleted, sight unseen.
due to compliance reasons, some companies must keep all spam
and can't just do a straight delete, but for those who don't,
deleting is fine.
bye for now,
kg

Hi Dave and Lim,
I completely agree. Outsourcing or at least
implementing as a service where small, but frequent
incremental updates are delivered to your server in
near real-time and automatically makes sense given
the climate for spam (and viruses).

I would need to see more of the log to determine
why they thought the mailbox was full or other error,, As for SMTPD and SMTP..
SMTPD id the listener daemon which brings the messages into the server. SMTP is
the delivery application (Queue Manager) which does the delivery of the spooled
messages locally or remotely

Hope this helps

Set up a new user. Then enable the copy all mail
(in the SMTP Setup) to this user.. Then on this user set up an inbound rule that
looks to see if that userid is not on the header and delete the messages that
satisfy the rule.. You should be left with only messages to/from that user in
the mailbox

messed with this for months even working with the senders developers but it
appears to be an Imail issue that we cannot discover.

Is there a way to create a rule on a single mailbox that will force all
messages to that mail box to show the plain/text only?

CBL actually runs hot and cold on this. I guess it depends on who you
get over there. If you follow through their web site you will come to a
place where it says something to the fact that if you are running and
IMail server (or a few others) contact us to get permanently
whitelisted. I know others here have gotten mixed results with this
butit might be worth a try.

Dave Doherty wrote:

Hi, all-

For those who have been following the Comcast threads, I had Comcast
blocking me also. I met up with a couple of very helpful and courteous
people there. The tech support person who called me back was willing
to learn about the problem, and when I explained about IMail's - what
do you call it? - domain spoofing? - and that it was normal behavior,
the fellow whitelisted me permanently without further effort on my part.

This is the same problem that eventually lists most, if not all, all
IMail servers on the CBL - IMail says it's
mail.whatever_domain_is_trying_to_send.com, and they object to lots of
FQDNs from the same IP.

Because they treated me fair and square, and handled the problem
expeditiously, I am providing the contact method only to those who
experience the problem. I don't want to swamp a good contact with
calls and have him become unavailable.

I am thinking about is compiling a list of IMail IPs to send him. If
there is any interest in this, I'd be happy to be the conduit. Don't
post your IP's here, folks, bugt do let me know if you're interested.
If there's enough interest, I will contact him directly and see
whether Comcast is willing to get a large whitelist from me. If so, I
will create a web page where you can submit your IPs, and I will set
up a verification mechanism to assure that we don't allow spammers to
post their IPs on that page also.

Unfortunately, even if we do this for Comcast, the CBL folks are
categorically not interested in whitelisting IMail servers
preemptively. Therefore, you WILL lose traffic to those guys, as I did.

If I have a domain, example.com, with an MX record that points to
mail.example.com, is there a reason that mail.example.com would *also*
need an MX record? Would it need on if mail.example.com has an IP address
with a valid PTR? Does this make sense?

See Len's post as he describes what I was saying.
But, since the dictionary attack defense has become a reality in IMail it is
less of an issue having the mail server publicly available.

Hi Everyone,

I'm about to impose... I just don't have the time to figure out how to
create these rules, and experiment until I get them right... So I come to
you outstanding gurus... (lucky you!)

We're running iMail 7.15, and I assume that I'll both an inbound and
outbound rule, at the domain level, to do what I need.

What we have is a work order system, and the work order IDs end up in the
subject lines of our messages. The format for the work order id is:

[WO--]

Where n is any digit from 0 to 9.

Eventually the messaging will be handled entirely by the work order
system,

but we always anticipate adding properly formatted Work Order IDs into the
subject lines of messages sent OUTSIDE the work order system too. These
rules would work for both.

We'd like to trap any messages that have a work order id anywhere in the
subject line, and COPY the message to a mailbox, [EMAIL PROTECTED] The message
should still go to the destination... we just want to have a copy of it to
the special mailbox for pickup by the work order system for additional
tracking.

This goes for messages that come IN to the domain (replies from customers)
as well as messages that go OUT through our domain (messages TO
customers).

Is there a rule that can do what I need, and if so, would someone be
willing

to supply it to me, 'cause I'm on a tight deadline? I'd really appreciate
it, and totally owe you a beer (or a sparkling grape juice, if drinkin's
not

your thing :)

Thanks,

Marc

What version of IMail... If it is prior to 2006 then the max errors were

Any ideas?

Search your Imail logs for connects from their outbound IP.

Also, if Imail is really accepting mail for [EMAIL PROTECTED] but then
failing to deliver it and returns a delivery failure/bounce report,
you must find that in the Imail logs.

If you can't find any traces in your log file, then ask them look in
their logs to see the exact reason of non-delivery, knowing that their
MTA may log reasons for non-delivery as poorly as Imail does.

it's stored in the SMTPD32.loc file in the IMail root directory. It's a
binary file so really isn't open to test editing. I have a KB article that
shows the structure of the SMTPD32.acc which I believe was the same
structure of the .loc file at the time it was written (the smtpd32.acc was
changed recently and cannot be used in place of the .loc at this time). Also
a while back someone here on the list wrote a script to manipulate this
file (to get around the 100 entry limit in the GUI) but for the life of me I
can't find it in the archives or anywhere. Does anyone out there remember
this and do you have a copy?

Hope this helps

Thanks, it helps. Yea, caught the /+n thing. It does help group the IPs.
The lazy side of me would like an accumulation per IP class (like: ###
208.24.219.*), but can't have everything.

Imail Analyzer has a SMTPD errors report which gives an invalid user
IP report like shown below. Does anyone have a similar report which
would show groupings by IP class (say invalids by class C) or invalids
by sending domain? That could help pinpoint trouble makers.

91 Invalid User IP = 208.24.219.169
60 Invalid User IP = 131.95.82.56
41 Invalid User IP = 131.95.82.55
9 Invalid User IP = 64.202.108.201
9 Invalid User IP = 64.202.108.199
8 Invalid User IP = 64.202.108.96
8 Invalid User IP = 64.202.108.99
6 Invalid User IP = 64.202.108.97
5 Invalid User IP = 64.202.108.98
5 Invalid User IP = 64.202.108.200

run that report text through windows sort, sorting on field 5 (instead
of field 1)

sorry, I'm used to running a Unix sort on windows.
Windows simpler sort doesn't work on fields, but on character position.

help sort

see the /+n option

Re: [IMail Forum] queue manager - crashing....Constantly

2006-01-13 Thread Eric Shanbrom
Actually , if you look through the SMTP log for ERR 005 and use the
process ID to identify the file pair you can remove the files and
eliminate them being processed and crashing the QM each time

btw, what chokes the queue manager? the Q or D file?

My guess would be some screwed headers or mime stuff in a D_ata file.

My guess is that qmgr scans the short Q files to decide which is msg
next up. It then picks up the D file, finds garbage, and crashes.

the ancient tactic is to move every thing from spool/ to, eg,
spool/hold. This allows new mail to flow.

Then move groups of spool/hold msgs back to spool/ until qmgr craps
out again.

Re: [IMail Forum] UID - safe to delete?

2006-01-13 Thread Eric Shanbrom
Bigger answer... Mailbox state is kept in the UID file so deleting it will
tell any IMAP clients everything is unread. that;s the biggie

Subject: [IMail Forum] UID - safe to delete?

Due to the queue manager crashes experienced yesterday, we have many email
problems with so-called missing mail. WHen I delete the corresponsind UID
files, this issue gets resolved as expected.

So, two questions:
   1) Does the queue manager write these UIDs *ever*?
   2) I know IMAP does, but see no connection to a UID failure unless
queue manager also writes it.

Anyway, bigger question, ANy negative impact (other than server needs to
rebuild them) if I delete the UIDs

  Subject: [IMail Forum] Queue Manager
  Service Won't Start

I've been experimenting with the 2006 version of
Collaberation Suite on my test server. The first release was really a
mess, it seemed, but the second seems to install and work pretty well
EXCEPT, the Queue Manager service won't start.

Initially I installed it as an upgrade to the
last version. SInce I couldn't get it to start, and I wanted to
experiment around with it, I then un-installed everything (to see if it had
something to do with the upgrade), and reinstalled. It still won't
start. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Also, I'm interested in everybody's opinion on
how stable this is. I love some of the new features, but if it breaks my
real server when I install it I might jump off a bridge.

  Thanks,
  Brian

Re: [IMail Forum] Blacklisted by Imail feature

2006-01-12 Thread Eric Shanbrom

Check the archives. This was being discussed over
the last week or so. This comes up every once in a while. Usually if you contact
CBL they will permanently whitelist you so you don't get listed again. The
actual test is way to restrictive which makes it just about invalid for those
running IMail and some other server packages which impersonate the virtual
domains in their HELO/EHLO strings.

  Subject: [IMail Forum] Blacklisted by
  Imail "feature"

  Hi, all-

Running Imail 8.15 here, but this
  applies to many other versions.

I have recently been blacklisted by CBL
and Comcast as a result of a feature that appears to be unique to
  IMail.It seems that there is
some way in which, for outgoing mail, Imail identifies itself as "mail."
followed by whatever domain originates the email. Since I have several hundred
domains, that means the server identifies itself as several hundred domains,
all at one IP address. To uneducated recipients, this looks like a spam
  generator.

Several other users on the Declude list
  report similar problems.

Is there a way to shut off this
function so the server always identifies itself with the official host
  name?
