we stopped using a spam box and had spam delivered directly to the inbox due to this very problem. The bottom line is that people don't check their spam box nor download it. I was wondering if reading the daily imail logfile one could determine trends that spammers use and then accumulate the IP's of the sending servers based on the trends to populate the smtp control access list? It seems to me that from looking over my own logs I can see patterns of abuse by spammers such as sending a test batch of 20 spams to the server and other such things that are later filtered by mxguard/sniffer. My goal is more of a 90% reduction in mail processed/filtered which would substantially reduce the load on the server. Thoughts? Bill Foresman Matrosity Hosting www.matrosity.com 850.656.2644

My goal is more of a 90% reduction in mail processed/filtered which would substantially reduce the load on the server. Thoughts? Since you mention Sniffer, the new version (currently in beta V2-9b1.5) includes a collaborative IP reputation system called GBUdb. That engine keeps track of IPs and will truncate it's scanning process (virtually eliminating the SNF based CPU load for that message) whenever the IP is sufficiently bad. When that happens the engine returns a specific result code also - so you can alter any scanning that comes after SNF, if you wish. You might give that a try. http://kb.armresearch.com/index.php?title=Message_Sniffer.GettingStarted.Dis tributions#NEW_SNF_V2-9_Wide_Beta IIRC, the Imail acl can be a challenge to use in the way you describe. If that has changed please let me know. What would be ideal is if the ACL could be modified at any time, and that IMail would automatically pick up the changes without a restart etc. It would also be good to know the limitations of the ACL since the number of entries could become quite large. RE: [IMail Forum] WAY OT: corrupt tcp/ip stack?

Hi Sharon, It's interesting - I've been battling these symptoms on a Win 2003 server running Imail/Declude/Sniffer and nothing else. Mine have Broadcom NICs. I have the exact same machine (ordered together) running same operating system, but IIS - and it never has had any problem. Only the Imail machine seems to lose TCP/IP functions every few weeks (but one time actually a few times a day - then it quited down again). I'm suspecting that it's effected by either the type or volume of email which then triggers some software component to take a different code path, which in turn uncovers some shortcoming in the TCP/IP stack or the NIC driver. Any kind of TCP/IP debug action, such as disabling/enabling the device, certain command line tools - even running certain Broadcom connectivity tests will freeze altogether. Eventually only a power cycle will help. Each occurrence I have tried to follow one theory - and then eliminated it (such as restarting various services, checking for paged pool shortages, checking the number of TCP/IP offload sessions, upgrading BIOS, drivers, etc.) My next step will be a different NIC brand to see if a different driver will act differently... None of that will help you - just letting you know that you're not alone with respect to the weirdness and inconsistency of the occurrences. After its release, when I installed it on a high volume client server with users all over the place the problems arose. Check the WebDir directory to be sure that the ASP.NET user has permissions there and below. This may not happen automatically if you installed ASP.NET Framewaork 2.0 after ASP.NET Framework 1.1. Also double check to see that IUSR and IWAM alse have permissions. And I beleive IMail 2006.2 requires ASP.NET 2, so check the IIS Manager to be sure you have the Imail website pointed to ASP.NET 2.0, not 1.1. I hope this helps. RE: [IMail Forum] OT: Tech Support Wait times
My point is that hold times shouldn't be this bad after this amount of time on top of a huge increase in the SA. Not to mention all the new bugs in 2006 which seems to be constant with their development methodology. I'm very concerned about 2006.2 since it will be .net 2 and a complete rewrite of software that already has problems that have yet to be fixed. On the surface the new features and constant updates are wonderful but they do insert major problems when things go bad and you can't get through to tech support in a reasonable amount of time. Since ipswitch tech support is 9 to 5 you can't even risk an after hours upgrade for fear of things being down until 9am their time if you can get through right away. Nothing like your phone system lit up like a christmas tree while your on hold waiting for a tech. It makes one not ever want to install an upgrade. I think the best method of installing an imail upgrade is to call tech support and click Next when someone finally answers. Imail antispam is weak because the idea is to buy the more expensive imail secure. I've lobbied for quite some time that imail is too expensive and at the renewal fees now being charged should include the antispam. I have a similar problem with 8.22 and a certain mail which kills SMTPd32 - Only the first line of the header gets stuck in the SPOOl directoy, when the service dies. Now I use ASSP to block it on the Adres, I found in the logs. Use the free version of serversalive with the SMTP-Roundtrip Plugin If it fails, start a batch to Stop all Imail-Services, kill all hanging Services and finally restart all Services. http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/index.asp Not to minimize the problems others are having, but we've been running 8.22 for a year and it has been rock solid on an old Dell server with a T1. We've always kept up with the patches and haven't had a lick of trouble with Imail stopping or dying, in over 6 years. With only 10k SMTP connections a day and 3k emails a day actually handled by Imail, I would think we are also substatially smaller than most Imail sites, so maybe that has something to do with it. It is, more importantly, completely insolated from the internet and no external SMTP gets to it without first going through ASSP, Trend AV gateway, hMailserver (ClamAV/antiphish gateway). These odd, killer emails are apparently just not reaching our Imail. I also use Servers Alive to monitor the services from another computer, although I am not using the roundtrip plugin. It has been very stable and useful, and I use it to monitor other servers and services as well. Very configurable but can momentarily run the cpu at 100% when trying to communicate with a service that is down. Noticable since I run it on my desktop at work and things come to a screaming halt for a few moments and my system fan spools up right before I get notice that a problem exists. Probably my fault since I am running it on a 2ghz Celeron with 512MB ram and have that much and more in use most of the time. RE: [IMail Forum] Thinking about upgrade. Looking for opinions.
I've heard some grumblings about imail secure but I balked at the cost of it. Since antispam is a value add, having to pay as much as ipswitch wants for imail secure was a bit high for what it is. There have been complaints about it but I think those were when updates were having issues. I do know that the antivirus is symantec which some don't care for. IMHO - better value with mxguard and messagesniffer. Declude folks don't seem too happy these days. Looking for opinions. Either that, or some great suggestions on tweaking the antispam capabilities of plain old Imail Server. Plain old Imail server works great with an antispam proxy or a gateway in front of it. Imgate is a good solution if you have a spare box to install it on and Len can give you support. On the other hand, if you want to just add to your existing Imail server you can install the opensource ASSP. It has a very active community and does wonders for an overworked Imail server. It does a tremendous job identifying/blocking spam. The only people that have said great things about the antispam capabilities of Imail Server Plus have been IPSwitch employees as far as I can remember. Richardson Sent: Tuesday, December 05, 2006 11:45 AM To: Imail_Forum@list.ipswitch.com Subject: [IMail Forum] Can't Start WorkGroup Share Service Good Tuesday Morning, I can't get the WorkGroup Share Service to start. I'm using ICS2006.1 on a Windows 2003 standalone server, not in an AD environment. This is a production machine, serving mail correctly without issue. The WorkGroup Share Service had been running properly for approximately two months (somewhere in early September to early November). Fortunately, this is an additional service that we're working towards turning on and making available to our users, so there is no legitimate data in the WorkGroup Share to be concerned with at this time. I have only been able to look at this off and on, but it if memory serves me correctly only two things took place prior to this service starting to fail that may be related: an attempt to add https to the WebMail site via IIS and Windows Updates, both on November 3, 2006. The log entries showing errors for the failed https configuration have gone away since those settings were undone, so I am leaning away from those at this point although I am keeping them in mind. The event viewer log entries for the WorkGroup Share service start failure - Event ID 7000: The WorkgroupShare service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. Event ID 7009: Timeout (3 milliseconds) waiting for the WorkgroupShare service to connect. Windows Updates installed on that date include the following: KB922582, KB923414, KB924191, KB890830, KB924496, KB920685, KB922819, KB921883, KB923191, KB925486 I also tried altering the DEP settings, to no avail. Short of un-installing each of those updates and installing them one by one to determine a possible problem, does anybody have any ideas about any specific problems that may cause the WorkGroup Share Service to be unable to start? It fails to start under the Windows services console as well as through the ICS web interface. Would it be possible to do a repair type of installation to remove only the WGS component and then put it back? Since this is a production machine, it would have to be without having any affect or concern for the mail data and settings. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time. RE: [IMail Forum] Problem with POP3 service
What's a lot? I would run analyze.exe on your logs to see how frequently people are checking email. If you don't do this on a regular basis you'll find your users will be checking email every 1 minute. We send them a polite don't do that email. It does sound like there is a problem though since pop3 should be fairly light in terms of cpu. RE: [IMail Forum] 550 not local host error
I've had one case of this where the sender wasn't using our system and got a 550 message from imail. Since he's not a customer of our system and simply sent an email to our customer it makes no sense that he would get a 550. The setup is Exchange on another server, and ASSP/Imail on the other. The change in this setup has been the Exchange server. Incoming email into ASSP/Imail is forwarded to Exchange in local domain. For outgoing email, users sent to Exchange and Exchange sends through the Imail/ASSP server. Nothing is showing up in the Exchange or ASSP logs as strange, just the Imail logs. Can anyone figure out the pattern that is happening here? Yo, Sensitive Type: saying New threads on this are pretty ridiculous is not an ad hominem attack: it's closer to a point of fact. Do you even have any idea how age-old the How to export usernames and passwords FAQ is? You should check your own archives (or maybe you don't keep any, to make sure you stay fresh). BTW, where's this newbie defense coming from? I'm sure Zul J, who has been asking questions on this list since July 2004 (half of them previously answered in the archives, half of them substantive, several of the latter asked twice on the same day) doesn't fit the usual definition of people who might not be comfortable asking a question. Maybe you mean something closer to people who don't do their own legwork before asking other people to help them with age-old non-problems. Or people who are too comfortable asking questions. I saw numbers that got as high as 80-8, but the second was always larger in the first few seconds after the restart (not really surprising). It seems to take 10-15 seconds before the restart completes. This is very strange operation! POP3 almost never stops and to see it doing it every minute, is bizarre! Does a re-install fix this at all? If not, try renaming the pop3d.exe to .old and reinstall (bad disk sector, maybe?). Set POP3 to Manual in services, and restart computer before install, if at all possible. Reset service back to Automatic, if install does not do this for you. Have you checked the HD? CHKDSK /F is still a good tool for many HD systems. Is your page file 3 times RAM? Did you find any other warnings or errors in the Event logs? Make them go away! Wouldn't it be nice mail servers could use some flavor of compression on emails between mail servers we would all enjoy bandwidth savings. Anyway, we really need this feature to ensure our servers aren't sent 10 or 50 GB files because it's going to happen at some point. The simple Fix for images would be to have a java app or activex that resizes the image to the size needed Before its uploaded to save bandwidth and use the user's cpu cycles to do the legwork instead Of your server. While this seems obvious, developers don't get it. Especially in these Times of 10 megapixel digital cameras that make 5 meg files. Upload your image here...just resize it, crop it and do a bunch of work on it manually before you Upload...then people say to heck with it. Too much work. What ever happened to making the computer work for US. Make mail smarter. Make it reject mail That is too large ahead of time. The only thing worse than the case you stated is if the server, by chance, only had 100 megs free drive space. Their documentation has stated that they are compliant with this since version 4 or 5, but there is almost no support for this, and it certainly is completely ineffective since all other servers rely on the recipient server to reject or accept based on the size of the message.I have been asking Ipswitch to fix this for a year and a half, along with several others that I work with and also experience this issue This is the main cause of messages getting stuck in Outlook's outbox when sending an oversized message to IMail. This is also the main cause of outgoing messages in IMail getting stuck retrying over and over again. All of my IMail customers have experienced this, some more than others. The lower the max E-mail size on either your server or the recipient server, the more frequently you will experience this issue.True and functional RFC 1870 support is where in EHLO connections, the size of the message in bytes is sent as an argument following the Mail From address. The recipient server then can take immediate action to accept or reject the message based on the size, and before a single bit of DATA is sent. IMail doesn't listen to the Size value nor does it send using it. This is further complicated by the fact that several servers, including Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SMTP, and SmarterMail do not communicate oversized messages in a way that IMail understands (they send back the 550 as soon as the message goes oversize instead of waiting for the end of the DATA to stop, and IMail only understands a 550 after the end of DATA). E-mail clients like Outlook, Outlook Express and Entourage have similar issues when sending which is why messages get stuck in their Outbox and sent continually. This not only causes messages to get stuck for long periods of time in a resending pattern, it also sucks up a ton of bandwidth. I have had this completely suck up all of a customer's bandwidth on the end of a T1 with just a few messages stuck, and of course bandwidth costs us money, so this requires constant monitoring. Here are two charts showing a single message being stuck. The first example is one stuck in an Outlook outbox, and the second is a message stuck in IMail's spool trying to be delivered to an Exchange server. Both messages were approximately 25 MB. Both charts start while the problem is already there and then the issue is fixed showing normal traffic.

RE: [IMail Forum] Asp error
Title: Asp error 2006 is filled with permission problems so this wouldn't surprise me. Since this is a 2003 server .net 1.1 came on it but it is patched. I was thinking of removing the Iadmin app pool and recreating it but am not sure. I'm leaning more towards the if it isn't broken don't fix it methodology. It seems to be running 9.01 (according to the services menu in the administrator console) which I am assuming is iMail 2006.01. Now I have downloaded the upgrades IMail 2006.03, and .04 and .1 just in case. When I go to run any of these updates the first message I get is Setup has determined that a later version is already installed. This setup installs an earlier version. So I looked at the files and a lot of them are dated Dec 19, 2005 which makes me believe that I am right that they are running 9.01 / 2006.01 Is there another place to confirm from within IMail Administrator or should I just ignore the upgrade message and proceed?
