Or again: Use ASSP. It can block or score connections by the
sender
location (using the senderbase data) and by blocking or scoring
Charsets.
I feel a little bit as I repeat myself again and again - but ASSP will do
nearly everything to protect you against spam, you can think of...

Matti

Get a statement in writing from ARIN stating exactly which IP blocks
are assigned to ISPs in those countries, which you will have to do
again in 30 days since things change.

You are better off using an RBL that is based upon country. Some
Firewalls support the use of RBLs now.

2007-10-30 Thread Matrosity Hosting
we stopped using a spam box and had spam delivered directly to the inbox due
to this very problem. The bottom line is that people don't check their spam
box nor download it. The other option is to delete spam after x days
automatically. Just easier to deliver to the inbox marked as spam in the
subject line.

I recently started imposing limits on user accounts. I have email
notifications sent to users as their boxes approach their limit and I also
received a copy so that I am aware of what is going on. Today I discovered
that when the SPAM user box reaches its limit, all users are getting
undeliverable notices. I emptied the SPAM box to resolve this, but I am
confused because when I looked at the mail in the SPAM box, it all looked
like legitimate email. Can someone explain this to me? I am using IMail

[IMail Forum] access list

2007-10-25 Thread Matrosity Hosting
I was wondering if reading the daily imail logfile one could determine
trends that spammers use and then accumulate the IP's of the sending servers
based on the trends to populate the smtp control access list? It seems to me
that from looking over my own logs I can see patterns of abuse by spammers
such as sending a test batch of 20 spams to the server and other such things
that are later filtered by mxguard/sniffer.
My goal is more of a 90% reduction in mail processed/filtered which would
substantially reduce the load on the server.
Thoughts?

Since you mention Sniffer, the new version (currently in beta V2-9b1.5)
includes a collaborative IP reputation system called GBUdb. That engine
keeps track of IPs and will truncate it's scanning process (virtually
eliminating the SNF based CPU load for that message) whenever the IP is
sufficiently bad. When that happens the engine returns a specific result
code also - so you can alter any scanning that comes after SNF, if you wish.

You might give that a try.

tributions#NEW_SNF_V2-9_Wide_Beta

IIRC, the Imail acl can be a challenge to use in the way you describe. If
that has changed please let me know. What would be ideal is if the ACL could
be modified at any time, and that IMail would automatically pick up the
changes without a restart etc. It would also be good to know the limitations
of the ACL since the number of entries could become quite large.

Hope this helps,

For those of us (most of us) that purchased a software subscription for
IMail 9.x and are still waiting for a stable webmail interface, is there
going to be any sort of attempt made to fix the current issues without
another major version upgrade?

I am afraid that I paid for a service agreement about a year and a half ago

impression that I am going to be told to upgrade to version 10 and pay for
another service agreement.

Thanks,

Subject: [IMail Forum] WAY OT: corrupt tcp/ip stack?

Hi Sharon,

It's interesting - I've been battling these symptoms on a Win 2003 server
running Imail/Declude/Sniffer and nothing else.

Mine have Broadcom NICs. I have the exact same machine (ordered together)
running same operating system, but IIS - and it never has had any problem.

Only the Imail machine seems to lose TCP/IP functions every few weeks (but
one time actually a few times a day - then it quited down again). I'm
suspecting that it's effected by either the type or volume of email which
then triggers some software component to take a different code path, which
in turn uncovers some shortcoming in the TCP/IP stack or the NIC driver.

Any kind of TCP/IP debug action, such as disabling/enabling the device,
certain command line tools - even running certain Broadcom connectivity
tests will freeze altogether. Eventually only a power cycle will help.

Each occurrence I have tried to follow one theory - and then eliminated it
(such as restarting various services, checking for paged pool shortages,
checking the number of TCP/IP offload sessions, upgrading BIOS, drivers,
etc.) My next step will be a different NIC brand to see if a different
driver will act differently...

None of that will help you - just letting you know that you're not alone
with respect to the weirdness and inconsistency of the occurrences.

Best Regards,
Andy

Yes, when Imail 2006.2 was released and many started to use it, including
installations on high volume or heavily used servers, the webmail bugs
started to show themselves. As an example, I was running the preview for
Imail 2006.2 on my server and had no errors or problems whatsoever. However
my server is low volume. After its release, when I installed it on a high
volume client server with users all over the place the problems arose.

As of right now, Imail 2006.21 RC1 is installed on my server and on my
client's high volume server and so far no errors have been seen or reported.

The preferences.config file is in each users file directory and is used by
webmail to set how the user wants certain things. If it does not exist, that
means the user has never changed anything from default and that is fine,
although in some cases having a preferences.config file even if everything
is default settings has helped.

I can't actually reproduce the probem here and am having a hard time
tracking down their browser settings because they're across the country.

Are there any temporary workarounds? What's the preferences.config fix?

What is the ETA on 2006.21? I know it's in RC1 status, but we need it FAST
FAST FAST!

I really think Ipswitch should start publishing a KNOWN ISSUES list with
every release, and constantly keep it updated as things arise. Forget
scaring off potential customers, they WANT to see this stuff. Be more
concerned with taking care of the many customers you already have! I looked
through the forums and boards before upgrading to this version, which was
released on March 6th I think, before upgrading our system. I saw a
reference here and there, but it didn't sound like the widespread revolt
that I'm experiencing!

Hi, Bill-

I'm still on 2006.1, so this may not help, but maybe it will.

Check the WebDir directory to be sure that the ASP.NET user has permissions
there and below. This may not happen automatically if you installed ASP.NET
Framewaork 2.0 after ASP.NET Framework 1.1.

Also double check to see that IUSR and IWAM alse have permissions.

And I beleive IMail 2006.2 requires ASP.NET 2, so check the IIS Manager to
be sure you have the Imail website pointed to ASP.NET 2.0, not 1.1.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

The Network Service does have full permissions to the webdir directory which
probably explains why the web admin works fine. How do I get Network Service
on the user dir's keeping in mind that this is a DC?

Good luck.

[IMail Forum] Pop3 restrictions

2007-06-09 Thread Matrosity Hosting
One of the major reasons for our upgrading to 2006.2 was the pop3

that came with the server?

2007-06-09 Thread Matrosity Hosting
I was expecting to see the pop3 restriction feature on the pop3 admin page
but it's on the domain properties of each domain. Does setting this for the
primary domain set it for all the domains just as it does for max message
size, etc..?

Bill, I am going to go and state something here I probably should not but I
used to easily do and I am going to do it now:

RANT ON

Get off you duff and start doing some home work. Problems with Imail Webmail
including the current beta3 version of the upcoming 2006.21 version of which
you are aware of have been discussed both here and on the Ipswitch Imail
online forum and such discussions included several conversations about the
problems and ways to attempt to resolve them. However your participation in
those is clearly lacking for if you had bothered to review such discussions
you would be making efforts to better serve your customers by working with
Ipswitch on this and implementing suggested fixes to verify if they work.
No, Ipswitch is not perfect nor is Imail. Are you?

RANT OFF

Blast shields on, fire away.

Hello people!!!

I was using SmarterMail since 2005... We're looking to go back with Imail
or ICS. I have downloaded the 30 trial and I am having some little problem
with Firefox. In WebMail, when I use Firefox 2.0.0.1, when I click on
INBOX, the first message in the list is selected. I can't select another
one (just single click) to get the preview. If I want to read the second or
third or any other message in the list, I have to double click it to open it
in a new window or new tab.

The resize of column is also not behaving as it should... It messes the
screen and the column are not keeping the desired size...

If anyone out there have an idea of what it could be, it would be nice to
here it from you...

Ok... out for today!!! I'm glad to be back on this mailing list!! :)

Since I've been complaining about getting a solution from ipswitch so I
thought I should post that I did get one from them (Tripp).

Basically, logins for web messaging were taking as much as 30 seconds if at
all after the upgrade from 2006.04a, which ran perfectly, to 2006.1 as
demanded by the security issue.

Tripp created a new dll which removed the disk quota display in the new web
messaging that resolved our login problems. This way I can hang in with this
until 2006.2 shows up and decide what to do at that point.

RE: [IMail Forum] OT: Tech Support Wait times

2006-12-23 Thread Matrosity Hosting
My point is that hold times shouldn't be this bad after this amount of time
on top of a huge increase in the SA. Not to mention all the new bugs in 2006
which seems to be constant with their development methodology. I'm very
concerned about 2006.2 since it will be .net 2 and a complete rewrite of
software that already has problems that have yet to be fixed.

On the surface the new features and constant updates are wonderful but they
do insert major problems when things go bad and you can't get through to
tech support in a reasonable amount of time. Since ipswitch tech support is
9 to 5 you can't even risk an after hours upgrade for fear of things being
down until 9am their time if you can get through right away. Nothing like
your phone system lit up like a christmas tree while your on hold waiting
for a tech. It makes one not ever want to install an upgrade.

I think the best method of installing an imail upgrade is to call tech
support and click Next when someone finally answers.

I am running Imail 2006.1. When I go to Global user changes and select
allow web access and Yes it takes a minute or two and completes the
save. However, some user calls and are denied access. When I check to see
if Allow web access is checked for them it is not. Is anyone else
experiencing this problem?

I am using the AD directory for my user base, running Imail on Windows 2003

Imail antispam is weak because the idea is to buy the more expensive imail
secure. I've lobbied for quite some time that imail is too expensive and at
the renewal fees now being charged should include the antispam. That being
said the 3rd party solutions offer arguably better solutions anyway.

HE Are you telling us that we need to install a 3rd party application
HE to make Imail run stable?
I think beside the small bugs in Imail, there are lot of essential parts
missing (or very basic) which have to be added by third Party products
(Mail-Flow monitoring, Anti-Spam, Anti-Virus, Penalty
Blocking)

I use Imail since Version 4 and love it - but it needs some add on's (which
are all free available - Like Hmailserver for Viruschecking, ASSP for all
Spam and Blockin Issues) etc..

Been running Imail since version 4 myself.
But I do expect that Imail should run on its own and not need 3rd party
application to survive.
Frankly, I think its a disgrace how the 2006 was released and how poor job
Ipswitch has done with it since.
I bet there are a ton of users that has not upgraded yet put paid for it
over a year ago.

So you think that its ok for Imail to require 3rd party programs to run
stable?
Its pretty piss poor when the servers crashed from malformed messages and
its been going on for a while now.

I have a similar problem with 8.22 and a certain mail which kills
SMTPd32 -
Only the first line of the header gets stuck in the SPOOl directoy,
when the service dies. Now I use ASSP to block it on the Adres, I

Use the free version of serversalive with the SMTP-Roundtrip Plugin If it

http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/index.asp

Not to minimize the problems others are having, but we've been running
8.22 for a year and it has been rock solid on an old Dell server with a T1.
We've always kept up with the patches and haven't had a lick of trouble with
Imail stopping or dying, in over 6 years. With only 10k SMTP connections a
day and 3k emails a day actually handled by Imail, I would think we are also
substatially smaller than most Imail sites, so maybe that has something to
do with it.

It is, more importantly, completely insolated from the internet and no
external SMTP gets to it without first going through ASSP, Trend AV gateway,
hMailserver (ClamAV/antiphish gateway). These odd, killer emails are
apparently just not reaching our Imail.

I also use Servers Alive to monitor the services from another computer,
although I am not using the roundtrip plugin. It has been very stable and
useful, and I use it to monitor other servers and services as well. Very
configurable but can momentarily run the cpu at 100% when trying to
communicate with a service that is down.
Noticable since I run it on my desktop at work and things come to a
screaming halt for a few moments and my system fan spools up right before I
get notice that a problem exists. Probably my fault since I am running it on
a 2ghz Celeron with 512MB ram and have that much and more in use most of the
time.

Good luck,

I've heard some grumblings about imail secure but I balked at the cost of
it. Since antispam is a value add, having to pay as much as ipswitch wants
for imail secure was a bit high for what it is. There have been complaints
about it but I think those were when updates were having issues. I do know
that the antivirus is symantec which some don't care for.

IMHO - better value with mxguard and messagesniffer. Declude folks don't
seem too happy these days.

Either that, or some great suggestions on tweaking the antispam
capabilities of plain old Imail Server.

Plain old Imail server works great with an antispam proxy or a gateway in
front of it. Imgate is a good solution if you have a spare box to install
it on and Len can give you support. On the other hand, if you want to just
add to your existing Imail server you can install the opensource ASSP. It
has a very active community and does wonders for an overworked Imail server.

It does a tremendous job identifying/blocking spam.

The only people that have said great things about the antispam capabilities
of Imail Server Plus have been IPSwitch employees as far as I can remember.

Someone else chime in here if I am mistaken please.

Good luck

Subject: [IMail Forum] Can't Start WorkGroup Share Service

Good Tuesday Morning,

I can't get the WorkGroup Share Service to start. I'm using ICS2006.1 on a
Windows 2003 standalone server, not in an AD environment.

This is a production machine, serving mail correctly without issue. The
WorkGroup Share Service had been running properly for approximately two
months (somewhere in early September to early November).

Fortunately, this is an additional service that we're working towards
turning on and making available to our users, so there is no legitimate data
in the WorkGroup Share to be concerned with at this time.

I have only been able to look at this off and on, but it if memory serves me
correctly only two things took place prior to this service starting to fail
that may be related: an attempt to add https to the WebMail site via IIS and
Windows Updates, both on November 3, 2006.

The log entries showing errors for the failed https configuration have gone
away since those settings were undone, so I am leaning away from those at
this point although I am keeping them in mind.

The event viewer log entries for the WorkGroup Share service start failure -

Event ID 7000: The WorkgroupShare service failed to start due to the
following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request
in a timely fashion.

Event ID 7009: Timeout (3 milliseconds) waiting for the WorkgroupShare
service to connect.

Windows Updates installed on that date include the following:
KB922582, KB923414, KB924191, KB890830, KB924496, KB920685, KB922819,
KB921883, KB923191, KB925486

I also tried altering the DEP settings, to no avail.

Short of un-installing each of those updates and installing them one by one
to determine a possible problem, does anybody have any ideas about any
specific problems that may cause the WorkGroup Share Service to be unable to
start? It fails to start under the Windows services console as well as
through the ICS web interface.

Would it be possible to do a repair type of installation to remove only the
WGS component and then put it back? Since this is a production machine, it
would have to be without having any affect or concern for the mail data and
settings.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.

Hi all,

I tried running ASSP again but it didn't matter. As soon as I start up
Queuemgr or SMTPD the CPU usage sky rockets to 100%, at this point I think
IMail is hosed. Reading through the SMTP log file I see a lot of

12:06 18:15 SMTP-() Info - Adding Queue file
C:\IMAIL\spool\Q33950809004cce99.SMD

It doesn't get processed, so all I have are bunch of emails sitting there in
the queue.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again,

Jon

I used to see this a lot, running Imail 6.xx, before I put our ASSP
gateway in place. I don't know how or if it was related, but I haven't
had any trouble since we started turning away all the junk.

Same with IMGate, which has fixed and salvaged so many IMail boxes that
were overwelmed and submerged trying to handle high-volume abuse.

IMGate recently cost Barracuda the sale of a $25K BC800 which was sent back
to Barracuda after IMgate was installed in front of a dying BC400, now
resurrected. :)

I'm being flooded what appears to be messages from someone's broken

Anyone else seeing this?

You need to look at your SMTP log for that message to 1) make sure the user
authenticated and 2) make sure that is not a delivery NDR.

Hi All,

In 2006.2, there is a new capability (optional), settable by admin, that
allows you to set the POP frequency. For example, if set to 5 mins, end
users can only POP once every 5 minutes.

We return an error message to the client and don't allow the log in, but we

Not really bizarre behavior, been around the world of computers for quite
some time! I remember one of my first Word (or was it WordPerfect?)
experiences and encountering the double line when I hit enter and I finally
figured it means 'new paragraph', so you get 2 linefeeds.

If you want a single linefeed, just hold shift and hit enter. I thought
everyone knew this by now... but then again I did have to tell some folks
here this 'trick' when we started using a new CRM software... guess an old
dog can still teach old tricks...

Oh, the online forum does the same thing, so it is not all that uncommon...

Hi All,

Just wanted to interject that although #2 and #3 are fixed in 2006.2, we are
still looking at #1 - the double spacing that occurs in compose mode. At
this point, we don't have a fix that we can include in 2006.2 - something
strange with the rich text editor (freetextbox -
http://freetextbox.com/default.aspx). We are more than open to any
technical tips/tricks/techniques to get around this annoying behavior.

One workaround, perhaps acceptable to some, might be a plain-text mode for
composing in which single spacing would be the default/expected behavior.

Bye for now,

upgrading...

Hi Matt,

Thanks, good additions. I've added to the list which, in entirety is. Our
current prioritization is as noted below and we'll adjust as feedback comes
in.

 1. what to do with deleted messages
 2. what to do with Sent messages
 3. disabling Forwarding
 4. what to do with attachments and should attachment gui be on by default
5. CC/BCC on/Off by default

6. Disabling Vacation Messages.
7. Set default message composition encoding to plain/text or text/HTML
8. Set text/HTML messages to be multipart with plain/text segment or
without.
9. Turn display of images on or off by default, but allow user override if
allowed by system admin.
10. Limit the number of aliases per domain that can be added just like the
accounts, but this needs to be locked down to just the administrator.

2006-11-17 Thread Matrosity Hosting
What's a lot?

I would run analyze.exe on your logs to see how frequently people are
checking email. If you don't do this on a regular basis you'll find your
users will be checking email every 1 minute. We send them a polite don't do
that email.

It does sound like there is a problem though since pop3 should be fairly
light in terms of cpu.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Problem with POP3 service

Hello,

After upgrading to Imail 8.22, the POP3 service seems to be continuously
consuming lot of CPU usage. This is happening with all the servers with
Imail 8.22 running. Is there a problem with the POP3 service in Imail 8.22?
Is there some patch available for the problem?

RE: [IMail Forum] 550 not local host error

2006-11-17 Thread Matrosity Hosting
I've had one case of this where the sender wasn't using our system and got a
550 message from imail. Since he's not a customer of our system and simply
sent an email to our customer it makes no sense that he would get a 550.

Sorry for the delay, I had to wait for another report...

The setup is Exchange on another server, and ASSP/Imail on the other.
The change in this setup has been the Exchange server. Incoming email into
ASSP/Imail is forwarded to Exchange in local domain. For outgoing email,
users sent to Exchange and Exchange sends through the Imail/ASSP server.
Nothing is showing up in the Exchange or ASSP logs as strange, just the
Imail logs.

Can anyone figure out the pattern that is happening here? The user sent one
email, it looks like Imail resets and starts another delivery thread which
goes hunting for DNS, I don't think it's finding it.

Here is the Verbose logs for Imail on the most recent complaint I have
gotten:

Subject: [IMail Forum] Migration from 8.22 to 2006 on new box

We're getting ready to bite the bullet and move from 8.22 to 2006, on a new
box. I hope it's possible to do a brand-new install of 2006 (rather than
having to install 8.22 first), then copy over accounts/mailboxes from the
other box's 8.22 install. Possible? Has anyone done this? Any
advice/watchouts? A quick search of the archives, and the Ipswitch
knowledgebase, didn't turn anything up.

In fact I'm waiting on hold with Ipswitch right now to ask them this very
question...

I would love to find a to do punchlist of best practices (least pain) for
the migration steps. Any advice, or pointers to others' experiences would be
terrific. Thanks!

Kevin-

One more item that I passed along to support, but I think you should know.
On the webmail interface there is no select all at the top of the checkbox
column. Some of my users like to be able to delete spam without checking the
individual boxes. We had this in 8.15 and previous versions, and I've heard
about it from several customers.

Having been a person that has asked a FAQ, I think the best response to
anyone asking a FAQ is a link to the archive or KB. It's polite and provides
the answer without explaining everything all over again.

Do you even have any idea how age-old the How to export

Do you even know what FAQ stands for? Then why are you so surprised when
the question is actually asked frequently? If anybody's panties are in a
bunch, it's the how dare this person ask a question that's been asked
before without searching the archives? How dare a person ask a support list
a question that people frequently ask? camp. Me? I'm not a Sensitive

Yo, Sensitive Type: saying New threads on this are pretty ridiculous
is not an ad hominem attack: it's closer to a point of fact. Do you even
have any idea how age-old the How to export usernames and passwords

to make sure you stay fresh).

BTW, where's this newbie defense coming from? I'm sure Zul J, who has
been asking questions on this list since July 2004 (half of them previously
answered in the archives, half of them substantive, several of the latter
asked twice on the same day) doesn't fit the usual definition of people
who might not be comfortable asking a question.
Maybe you mean something closer to people who don't do their own

non-problems. Or people who are too comfortable asking questions.

And anytime you want to compare my input into the IMail community with your

Did you store this info in a external database like SQL? If you did, you
 can
query SQL from MSAccess, ASP, VBS,etc.

if username info is in IMail DataBase, you will find it in registry

 HKLM\Software\Ipswistch\IMail\Domains\domain.com\Users\

 Password is encrypted.

You can read registry with winmgmts: and save it in a plain txt file.

The email was outbound to gmail. It's almost like for one minute the Imail
server at driller.com thought it was responsible for gmail.com and couldn't
find the user (invalid user).

I think that usually shows that they did not authenticate before sending

I've made a few connections to your server and some of those lasted over 50
seconds (my telnet program counts time of connection and I saw 70 once, but
maybe some timeout makes it think it is longer). I saw numbers that got as
high as 80-8, but the second was always larger in the first few seconds
after the restart (not really surprising). It seems to take 10-15 seconds
before the restart completes.

This is very strange operation! POP3 almost never stops and to see it doing
it every minute, is bizarre!
Does a re-install fix this at all?
If not, try renaming the pop3d.exe to .old and reinstall (bad disk sector,
maybe?). Set POP3 to Manual in services, and restart computer before
install, if at all possible. Reset service back to Automatic, if install
does not do this for you.

Have you checked the HD? CHKDSK /F is still a good tool for many HD systems.

Is your page file 3 times RAM?

Did you find any other warnings or errors in the Event logs? Make them go
away!

Sorry nothing more specific, but it has the feel of a system problem...

Can you try another NIC in the computer? Is the driver for the current NIC,
the latest? Does the NIC have any power management enabled on it? You might
try disabling that...

Oh, I saw you playing with the service greeting... seems it's back to
normal, now.

It definitely is stopping - I get disconnected from Telnet when it happens.

The numbers are (for each telnet connection)
59-4
18-2
4-4

The service stops at exactly :53 seconds past the minute every two minutes.
Some 30 seconds later the system restarts the POP3 mail service.
Imail
doesn't log down to the second logging to sys.txt so I've set it to log
to the event log instead.

1 minute is also the default poll interval for IMonitor. Shut it off, at
least for a while.

What happens when you manually try to stop/start the service? If that goes
OK and quickly, does the restart have any effect on the situation?

Did you enable logging in the POP3 service? Does the log show the service
restarting when you do it and nothing otherwise? Maybe the service is not
really stopping? If you telnet to port 110, the numbers at the end tell how
many current connections and how many since last restart. If yours is really
restarting every minute, I would expect the last number to be fairly small,
certainly less than a thousand. What does the first number show?

Wouldn't it be nice mail servers could use some flavor of compression on
emails between mail servers we would all enjoy bandwidth savings.

Anyway, we really need this feature to ensure our servers aren't sent 10 or

In this pay-per-bandwidth age, this is sadly the truth among many asps for
isp That host email and web services. Ie, people love to upload images and
video. The simple Fix for images would be to have a java app or activex
that resizes the image to the size needed Before its uploaded to save
bandwidth and use the user's cpu cycles to do the legwork instead Of your
server. While this seems obvious, developers don't get it.
Especially in these
Times of 10 megapixel digital cameras that make 5 meg files.

Upload your image here...just resize it, crop it and do a bunch of work on
it manually before you Upload...then people say to heck with it. Too much
work.

What ever happened to making the computer work for US. Make mail smarter.
Make it reject mail
That is too large ahead of time.

The only thing worse than the case you stated is if the server, by chance,
only had 100 megs free drive space. Not only did the transfer sit and take
place, but you run the risk of running the drive out of space.

Bill,Try to use the proper math for converting from MB to
bytes. The registry stores this value in bytes. You want to use the
proper standard where converting bytes to a larger measure you use a multiple of
1024. 1,048,576 bytes = 1 megabyte
50 megabytes = 52,428,800 bytesIf you want to
change everyone, export the registry and do a search and replace, then import
the changes. Make sure to keep an original registry backup of the Ipswitch
tree just in case.MattMatrosity Hosting wrote:

Max message size on all IP based domains. Thsi will affect the virtiulals

RE: [IMail Forum] Maximum size email

2006-11-03 Thread Matrosity Hosting

Seems like this really needs to be fixed as another
potential problem. In the meantime, what should be entered into 2006.1 since it
looks like the MB option doesn't take?

email
Ipswitch needs to fix their RFC 1870 issues. Their
documentation has stated that they are compliant with this since version 4 or 5,
but there is almost no support for this, and it certainly is completely
ineffective since all other servers rely on the recipient server to reject or
accept based on the size of the message.I have been asking Ipswitch to
fix this for a year and a half, along with several others that I work with and
also experience this issue This is the main cause of messages getting
stuck in Outlook's outbox when sending an oversized message to IMail. This
is also the main cause of outgoing messages in IMail getting stuck retrying over
and over again. All of my IMail customers have experienced this, some more
than others. The lower the max E-mail size on either your server or the
recipient server, the more frequently you will experience this
issue.True and functional RFC 1870 support is where in EHLO connections,
the size of the message in bytes is sent as an argument following the Mail
From address. The recipient server then can take immediate action to
accept or reject the message based on the size, and before a single bit of DATA
is sent. IMail doesn't listen to the Size value nor does it send using
it. This is further complicated by the fact that several servers,
including Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SMTP, and SmarterMail do not communicate
oversized messages in a way that IMail understands (they send back the 550 as
soon as the message goes oversize instead of waiting for the end of the DATA to
stop, and IMail only understands a 550 after the end of DATA). E-mail
clients like Outlook, Outlook Express and Entourage have similar issues when
sending which is why messages get stuck in their Outbox and sent
continually. This not only causes messages to get stuck for long periods
of time in a resending pattern, it also sucks up a ton of bandwidth. I
have had this completely suck up all of a customer's bandwidth on the end of a
T1 with just a few messages stuck, and of course bandwidth costs us money, so
this requires constant monitoring. Here are two charts showing a single
message being stuck. The first example is one stuck in an Outlook outbox,
and the second is a message stuck in IMail's spool trying to be delivered to an
Exchange server. Both messages were approximately 25 MB. Both charts
start while the problem is already there and then the issue is fixed showing
normal traffic.

2006 is filled with permission problems so this wouldn't
surprise me. Since this is a 2003 server .net 1.1 came on it but it is
patched.

I was thinking of removing the Iadmin app pool and
recreating it but am not sure. I'm leaning more towards the if it isn't broken
don't fix it methodology. I hate this because a smoking engine is usually an
indicator of bigger problems.

Bill,

This is similar to an error I used to see
occasionally in the early days of .NET 1.0. As I recall, it was a permissions
error that was extremely hard to solve because the error message didn't describe
what was actually happening. Installing .NET Framework 1.1 over 1.0 solved the

Imail_Forum@list.ipswitch.comSubject: [IMail Forum] Upgrading version
problem

Hi,

I have been called in to do an emergency
upgrade on an iMail 2006 server that I have seen only once before. It seems to
be running 9.01 (according to the services menu in the administrator console)
which I am assuming is iMail 2006.01. Now I have downloaded the upgrades IMail
2006.03, and .04 and .1 just in case. When I go to run any of these updates the
first message I get is

Setup has determined that a later version
is already installed. This setup installs an earlier
version.

So I looked at the files and a lot of them
are dated Dec 19, 2005 which makes me believe that I am right that they are
running 9.01 / 2006.01

Is there another place to confirm from
within IMail Administrator or should I just ignore the upgrade message and
proceed?

Thank you
